Has anyone else tried this?
I did it yesterday and it really does speed up typing. I don't think it's just my imagination.

Nope I have never needed to, but a ton of people swear by it.

Love this trick. Another one of my favorite features of the storm

I use a dime and it makes a noticeable difference. jlevy73 what is a torx screw?
Its a tiny screw driver that fits into the screws that hold your screen in place. The problem with many of the Storm are those screws have been tightened too much. A half rotation and made a huge difference.
I would be careful with using a dime. It will destroy your screen over time.
I use the business card trick...works good for me. I'd end up dropping the dime everytime I did a battery pull...but it's a good idea too.
Underneath the battery door are two screws, one located on the left side in the center of the device and the other is located on the right side in the center of the device under the water label. They have a head that looks similar to this only smaller. If you turn each one no more than a 1/4 - 1/2 turn counter clock wise you will loosen up the screen and it will function the way it should. The torx driver needed to complete this is a T6. The reason the screens are tight is because these screws are too tight from the factory.

Well said BBC.
The dime has definitely left an impression on my battery. Maybe I'll try the business card idea and see how I like that. Or, get a tiny screw driver.
I got mine from Lowes but any hardware store will have one. Radio Shack should. Important you don't want just any Torx screw driver you want the T6, which is a specific size that will fit your the screws in your phone. Neo did a nice write up with pics in case you want to review it:

1 -2 guitar picks on top of the battery also works without leaving an impression on the battery. The torx screwdriver is also available at Sears in their tool department.
When in doubt, pull the battery out!
