It is simple. The terms are one in the same. Both actions (reboot) the device so to speak.

also note that you are not talking about simply turning off the device using the "end call" button or the "turn power off" icon (software reset). these tend to NOT completely clear the device memory...so some applications may actually still be "kind of" running.

however, the results of a battery pull and the quickpull app are essentially the same. they clear the dynamic memory, thus making your device run faster after the reboot

It is said, that some problems require the hard reset by taking out the battery especially when phone functions are affected, but I would estimate, that the software soft reset is ok in ~90% of all issues. Anyhow, another recommendation for hard reset is, that you leave the battery out for 30 sec to really clear the memory.
