It's just people who got early invites. I have a friend who is already in. All they are doing is selling the invitation code. I wouldn't buy one either but some people might want in bad enough to fork out the $$$

Sounds like a turnoff to me. I'll keep my youmail for now it does a nice job....and just wait and see if Google does actually become free in a couple weeks.

Google Voice can not be compared to Youmail... I've been using GV for almost a year now and it has many great features. It is essentially your telephone number for life. Whenever anyone calls you on your assigned GV number the call is automatically forwarded to as many phones as you want... Home phone, cell phone, work phone etc. No matter how many times your land line or cell line changes, your GV number remains the same... No more sending mass messages when/if your number changes.

Another cool feature is that you can have GV treat certain numbers as spam and the caller on the other end gets a recording that says that your number is no longer in service (great for exs or telemarketers)... No more white list, black list programs. I also saw an ad that was headed is GV the end for telemarketers. Well... It has been for me.

GV has not quite mastered the transcribed voice mail thing yet; but, they do have a radio button that asks if a transcription was useful or not so I hope this is something they're working on. Another good add-on to GV is a new program Google has called GVdialer. GVdialer allows you to make a call through your GV number so that your GV number is what shows on caller ID. Others will see you GV number instead of your real number. You can call out through GV without the program but GVdialer automates everything so there is no additional input or key sequence you must press... Just set if you want to use GVdialer on all calls or any other option.

GV and GVdialer will be extremely beneficial for those that have a my faves or similar plan. Set the GV number as a my fave and enjoy unlimited calls to that number... Add GVdialer to the equation and enjoy unlimited outgoing calls to any number.

Worried about text messages??? No worries. Text messages to your GV number is forwarded to the cell phone number of your choice. The only problem (that I easily got used to) was that GV assigns a number to the text with the 406 area code... The only way you'll know who texted is by importing your address book to GV. From that point on, the text will show the 406 number in the heading but the body of the text will include the person's name. The person on the receiving end will only see your caller I'd name however... No confusing 406 number for them.

Like Leo stated, Google removed the invite existing customers had so be careful before purchasing an invite.

EDIT: I just read the info on the link Leo posted and realized that I duplicated a lot of info that was already stated. I have not used the GV app but based upon the article you should use GVdialer... Everything is automated w/ GVdialer. Miss a call? Clink on # to dial out GVdialer's phone listener catches the dial @ transfers the info through GVdialer & your GV number

You mail had a pretty cool interface with my Storm, it had a wide range of personalized options like custom answer greetings for different friends, etc. I don't remember the reason I deleted youmail, most likely it just got lost in the shuffle of installing new os leaks, and hybrids. Google Voice I am still messing with. I had trouble getting a local number in my one horse town, but was able to get one from the city next door. Text transcripts still need some work, but calls made and received are clear without lag. Calling out was a pain, so I tried GVDialer for 30 days, I am not sure, but I feel this dialer was most of my problem with app free mem dropping so fast on my Storm. With Google Voice, you have the option of having the person's id show up, or your GV number showing up. I like knowing who is calling me, but using my GV number in my VZW circle of friends works great, as long as I don't know who is calling me. Nothing is ever smooth in real life, go figure. Don't pay for a Google Number, it just takes time to get the invite. I think my wait was 3 to 4 months.

My experience has been totally different. My caller ID shows the person who's calling so I always know if I want to answer or not. And, I don't think mem drop was caused by GVdialer either. Right now I'm using BBC's 7.1.4 hybrid and my mem has been hovering aournd 47-53MB for the last three days w/o any random or manual reboots. With prior hybrids mem dropped to around 32MB on occasion but many had this problem and very few were using GVdialer.

You might want to check your settings.
