Verizon gives the OK to 5.0.0.212 for the Storm 2
It has been confirmed by our "ninja" that Verizon has approved OS 5.0.0.212 for the Storm 2. There may be a little few tweaks that RIM will enhance but .212 has been approved. Now that we know which OS will be used with the Storm 2, when is Verizon planning on releasing this phone? According to our ninja, they want to get it out by the end of September or the third week in October at the latest. Don't you think Verizon would hype this up and/or have some advertisements about it? Our Ninja informed us that they are not wanting to make the same mistake as they did last year with the 1st Storm. Hype it up and have the phone get a lot of negative feedback and have it be a flop. So hopefully with in 30 days, we will be seeing the Storm 2!!

This is the one part about this whole news that causes me a slight bit of doubt in the back of my mind. I have no reason to doubt your sources; but if 5.0.0.212 has been approved, then there can't be any enhancements made by RIM; or a new build number would have to be assigned, and it wouldn't be 5.0.0.212 anymore.

This is true too...I wonder if the enhancements are provisioning for vzw specifically? I do agree though, if they change anything, it would warrant a different OS version.

Here's the $64 question Dave. Does an OS have to be set for mass production? Or can that be changed at a latter stage.

Well, from what i've learned; once a build number is set, that particular build is set in stone. Of course, RIM's tweaks could be something as simple as tweaking the BB App Store app for the S2; in which case it wouldn't count as a change to the OS itself.

They can work on a new build and release it within the 30 day time frame like they did .75 It makes me think of little elves, with little netbooks, using BBDM to load the OS on the handsets that have already been manufactured. They are Canadian and Mexican relatives of the north pole elves.

This is interesting news... but for those of you "in the know" what does this mean for Storm 1 owners?

Oh, in that case; I think it just has to be packaged with a vendor.xml file for the specific carrier, and placed on the carrier's update server. Of course, the support folks must receive some training on the OS once it is approved, before it can ship.
In other words, if an OS leaks and you have it installed; and subsequently becomes official, there's absolutely no sense in reloading the "offical" package onto your device, as the only thing different is vendor.xml - the OS itself is exactly the same.
