These Olympic games have been so much fun. Last night Usain Bolt added to the fun when he set a new Olympic record in the 100m Men's final heat (9.63sec). After securing the gold medal, he was interviewed and asked how long he planned on enjoying the victory before he's back at it for the 200m race.
"All I gotta do is thank a few people on my BBM..."
So apparently Mr. Bolt is a BlackBerry user and BBM is his favorite way of communicating with friends and family. As you can imagine, social media throughout the U.S. caught that little "BBM tidbit" and BlackBerry fans rejoiced while Apple fans quickly pointed out that Usain Bolt tweets from an iPhone.
Truthfully, with the certain apps lacking on the BlackBerry platform, like Instagram for example, it's not uncommon for celebrities to actually pack two or even three phones that collectively meet their needs. Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, and Kim Kardashian, just to name a few, are dual-smartphone users and as much as they may love their cute apps on an iPhone, nothing can replace a BlackBerry's keyboard, security and BBM capabilities.
It's interesting though that while he may use an iPhone and Instagram as well, BBM was the first thing that came to his mind when thinking about who to thank after the victory; it wasn't iMessage.
This is where RIM needs to capitalize in marketing. A simple message like "what's the only thing faster than Usain Bolt?... A BBM" would fit perfectly with Bolt. Let's hope someone at RIM caught the action last night and have some reps on the phone as we speak. RIM needs to show the world how BlackBerry people do.
