In a very surprising move, Sunil Dutt, BlackBerry India's Managing Director has resigned. This news comes as quite a shock considering that in the past few days we found out how well the BlackBerry Z10 has been selling in India. Selling enough units to be completely sold out in two days is a testament to Dutt's leadership even after a little over a year at the helm.
“I can confirm Sunil Dutt has left his position as Managing Director, BlackBerry India with immediate effect. We wish Sunil well for the future. In the interim, Rick Costanzo, Executive Vice President for Global Sales, will take over the leadership of the talented management team in India as we start the search for a new Sales lead as soon as possible. India is an extremely important market for BlackBerry and our aim is to continue to build on our recent momentum with the launch of BlackBerry 10,” a spokesperson for BlackBerry said.
Even though BlackBerry has seen it's share in the smart phone market decline in India, the recent news of the BlackBerry Z10 selling out should have been a reason to celebrate. This news of Dutt resigning raises many, many questions. Some rumors put Apple as looking for a head of it's operations in India.
What is your opinion? Did Mr. Dutt resign on his own or was he pushed out? Is he looking for a job with Apple? Why would he resign if he was in the midst of seeing a rebirth of BlackBerry in a very crucial market, especially with the BlackBerry Q10 to come out shortly?
