  • RIM Looking To Dip It's Hand Into Trough Of Kodak Patents

What happens when a major photo tech company goes bankrupt? Outsider battles begin to claim what valuables are left. In the case of Kodak, it's patents. And they hold a lot of them. Apple, Google, and RIM have agreed to buy patents from Kodak to the tune of a cool 525 million dollars, giving them the right to digital technology to capture and share photos. 1,100 of the patents relate to capture, manipulation, and sharing.

"This is a fraction of our overall patent portfolio," said Chris Veronda, a spokesman for Rochester, New York-based Kodak. "We retain ownership of about 9,600 other patents for our ongoing businesses."

There were a total of 12 companies as part of the patent deal which include Facebook, Amazon, and Microsoft.

What RIM does with these patents and where it takes them is anyone's guess. Somehow I'm guessing they'll be looking to improve that already impressive camera for the BlackBerry 10 platform.
