The layoffs that were rumored to be coming have sadly become reality as RIM did indeed end the jobs of 95 employees at the Bedford, Nova Scotia building this week. It's a sad sign of the fiscal times at RIM. Even sadder is how the layoffs were reportedly delivered....via teleconference.
According to one of the laid off employees at the Bedford facility, "You know from the email that if your meeting is on the first floor, it’s not a pep talk. It’s inevitable it will be a presentation of your package." Very sad news, and very cold and impersonal to be told of your impending loss of employment by a suit in a corporate office hundreds of miles away.
Nova Scotia's Economic Development Minister, Percy Paris, proclaimed that he hoped that the layoffs were temporary and that they wold provide support for the recently laid off. Mr. Minister, we all hope the layoffs are temporary and that the release of the BlackBerry 10 Smartphone will bring about a renewal of success and support for RIM.
