  • RIM Fights "Inconspicuous Usage Of Cameras" And Their Abusers

Research In Motion today filed a patent with the USPTO to help fight what RIM calls "inconspicuous use of cameras on handheld mobile communication devices." Basically what RIM is doing is keeping people's private moments private. Their patent "extends the normal camera-taking procedure and thus requires the camera user to take pictures in a conspicuous manner--the rationale being that a camera user would be less likely to take unauthorized pictures if such actions could be easily recognized."

What the patent does is require the picture taker to keep the subject in focus for a predetermined time. This will make the picture taker more obvious and susceptible to scrutiny if they're lingering too long around something they shouldn't be. The applied for patent does do wonders for peoples privacy and should keep some unscrupulous people at bay. The patent also allows IT admins to set the limits on employee devices. As beneficial as this is, there is no real sign that this technology will be implemented on any scale currently or in the future.

Let us know your thoughts on this patent idea. Would it effect your picture taking habits?
