  • RIM Admits They Are Behind Australia's Mysterious " Wake Up" Campaign


    It has been a strange couple of days for RIM, as they have been stuck in the middle of controversy once again. This time being blamed for a flash mob outside an Apple store in Sydney Australia. It was rather interesting how this one played out. Initially it was Samsung who was said to be behind the strange "Wake Up" campaign. However, Samsung publicly denied it stating that " Samsung Electronics Australia has nothing to do with the 'Wake-Up Campaign".

    So who could it be? BBOS member DownForce pointed out in a forum post that RIM was now being blamed for the "Wake Up" protest, and pointed to and article that showed why. Some digging around by an associate at Macworld Australia showed that the websites sources code pointed to RIM's AU website. Sounds, like RIM got caught with their pants down on this one.

    Furthermore, RIM has since issued a statement saying they were indeed behind the Australian "Wake Up" campaign. Richelle Gillett, the Account Director from Spectrum Communications for BlackBerry has issued the following statement:

    “We can confirm that the Australian ‘Wake Up’ campaign, which involves a series of experiential activities taking place across Sydney and Melbourne, was created by RIM Australia. A reveal will take place on May 7th that will aim to provoke conversation on what ‘being in business’ means to Australians.

    Strange, embarrassing, awkward may all be appropriate words to describe RIM's latest advertising campaign, but it does lead us to another question. What is this "Wake Up" campaign for? There is a web site associated with this campaign that simply has a count down timer to May 7 in which RIM is apparently going to make a big announcement. RIM has mentioned that the announcement will aim to provoke conversation on what "being in business" means to Australians, one has to wonder why would they make something business like so exciting.
