• Mike Lazaridis Donates $100 Million Into The Quantum Nano Center

Mike Lazaridis, the co-founder and former co-CEO of Research In Motion has put $100 million into his new technology and research center, The Mike & Ophelia Lazaridis Quantum-Nano Center. The center, which opens tomorrow (9/21), is designed to be a research center like "AT&T's Bell Labs of the 1960's."

The lab which is located in Waterloo, Ontario is trying to make the lab "the Bell Labs of the 21st Century." Lazaridis, after leaving RIM in January, 2012 has devoted most of his time developing the new lab to create the technological and scientific breakthroughs "at the scale and size of an atom."

“It’s getting more and more difficult to make smaller devices as we approach the size of an atom, but it’s also getting more expensive to build those devices,” he said. “You know you’re at the limit when those two things happen. The only way we can break through those barriers is quantum computing.”

Lazaridis remains a part of RIM as a shareholder and a committee member for innovation. He keeps in touch with Thorsten Heins who Lazaridis picked to be his successor.
