• Google Pulls Fake Android BBM App; Thousands Of People Duped

When BlackBerry announced that it was making BlackBerry Messenger available for Android and iOS operating systems, it appears a few unsavory characters tried to get the jump on people's fervor. A fake BBM for Android app was discovered in the Google Play store and removed, but not until it got upwards of 100,000 people to downloaded it.

The app called "blackberry messenger bbm" created by developer "RIM" was discovered in Google's "Google Play App Store", which is an un-moderated store. This allows everyone to create an app and post it no matter whether it is malicious or not. The giveaway that should have alerted people that the app was fake was the fact that the developer called themselves RIM. BlackBerry changed their name from RIM to BlackBerry in January, 2013.

The fake BBM Android app had a start screen that said the app would be active June 27th and asked for an agreement to allow it to install an advertising network called "Start Up" which then installed bookmarks, icons and other things on the users Android phone.

Remember that BlackBerry has only said that the cross platform version of BlackBerry Messenger will be out "this summer" and not as other carriers had stated on June 27th.

Keep checking back to this site for further news of when BlackBerry will officially launch BlackBerry Messenger for Android and iOS.

If you see it out anywhere currently, it's a fake and it's best to avoid downloading it.
