I was at the local T-Mobile store today getting a pre-paid BlackBerry SIM for my developer friend Corran
for BlackBerry Jam Americas, when I started in on a conversation with the sales rep about what he thought about the new iPhone 5.
I wasn't surprised when he started in with what most people are saying about it. That's it's just another thinner iPhone 4S. So we went back and forth for a sec taking punches at how lame people can be to be duped into buying a new device every year that is basically identical to it's predecessor. I'm not saying BlackBerry has been perfect in this regard with a couple models, but we seem to be the ones always getting shit for it.
Anyway, the sales rep then asked me if I had seen the skit on the Jimmy Kimmel show which shows them interviewing people on the streets (some of them with iPhones) about what they think of the new iPhone 5. The catch is, the iPhone 5 isn't out yet, so they were actually showing them an iPhone 4S! Just watch the video above, the answers are hilarious.
It just goes to show, with a little marketing strategy, people will buy anything if they think they really need it. Even it it's just minuscule differences. Which, by the way, I've been tooting for some time now about the iPhone. It's a platform that has reached it's end-life. The reason new iPhones are continuing to look more and more the same is because there isn't much left for operational expansion. However, that's not what we see in the upcoming BlackBerry 10
, which I predict will blow the iPhone 5 out of the water come January 2013.
