  • BBOS How To: Hiding A BBM Contact's Updates On BlackBerry 10

BlackBerry Messenger is an integral part of the BlackBerry experience and that has stayed true in BB10. We've gotten a ton of enhancements to BBM, like BBM Video Chating, and a beautiful new UI. One of the coolest little Easter eggs we've found on BBM 10 is the ability to hide/block a contacts updates.

Look, we have probably all come in contact with a friend, co-worker or family member that updates their display picture, status, location on foursquare, posts on facebook or shares tweets on BBM way too much. If you're anything like me and need to constantly clear out whatever the little red spark shows as unviewed/unread, it may drive a little crazy to have someone like that on BBM.

Fortunately, BlackBerry Messenger on BB10 has a cool little hidden feature that allows the user to block anyone's updates on BBM and still keep them as a contact. In this example, I'll take my fellow blogger MikelCal and hide his updates from my BBM Updates' list. To do this, you simply press and hold on the contacts name within the Updates view. The side menu will pop up, as seen above, and you will be able to pick between opening a chat with them, viewing their profile or hiding their updates.

Upon selecting to hide that contact's updates, you will be prompted with a cool little French Toast notification and enables you to undo this action if you did it by mistake. Yes, this is the second area where French Toasts have made an appearance on BlackBerry 10. We told you guys about the first one (which is still the case on the Z10) way back in October when we found it on the Dev Alpha's browser settings.

If you decide any time afterwards to unhide this contact's updates, you can do so by going into your BBM settings, which you can get to by swiping down from the top bezel in any area of BBM. In your BBM settings, scroll all the way to bottom to Blocked Contacts and click "Edit." From there you will see any invites, apps or updates that you have blocked/hidden from BBM. Going to Updates, and then clicking "Remove" will allow to unhide this contact's updates from your BBM feed.

Hopefully you won't need to use this little hidden feature on BBM, but if you do want to block someone's annoying updates, it's nice to know on BlackBerry 10, you can.
