• Accessory Review: Brainwavz S0 (ZERO) Earphones

The unboxing of a new smartphone is an art form in itself. If you’re like me, you typically throw everything to the side as you marvel at your new piece of technology. Within the discarded packaging, you normally find an accessory that will never leave the box: the low-quality earbuds.

Smartphones have evolved over the last decade, from a simple communication tool to high-quality portable multimedia devices. Long gone are the days of carrying separate devices for music & communication. With this technological evolution comes the need for earbuds that can provide you with a superior quality of sound. Today, let me introduce you to a hidden gem in the earbud industry, the Brainwavz S0 (ZERO) Earphones.

Hong Kong-based Brainwavz is still a fairly new name in consumer headphones in North America, but their current product offering could quickly change such notions. Being an avid audiophile who enjoys listening to high-quality music while keeping myself occupied in the office, I had mild expectations prior to trying these S0 earphones with a $60+ price tag.

What first caught my attention was the fit of the ear buds in my ear. Brainwavz employ a soft twist silicone tip that is easily insertable in your ear. I found that I could get a very tight fit by twisting the ear bud a bit while inserting it, giving a near noise cancelling experience.

While listening to some Top 40 songs, the clean, interference-free sound made every aspect of the songs stand out on their own.

The build quality found in the S0 is astounding! The above image will help to explain how Brainwavz headphones give such a clear sound.

    The Brainwavz S0 Tech Specs:

    • Sensitivity: 100 dB @ 1mW
    • Frequency Range: 18 Hz ~ 18KHz
    • Jack Plug: 3.5 mm stereo gold plated
    • Cable Length: 1.2m/Y-Cord/Flat/Copper
    • Rated Impedance: 16 ohm
    • Drivers: Dynamic, 9mm

What I also found very appealing from Brainwavz's S0 earphones is the durability of the cable. I've been known to break or slice cables on headphones in the past, but with the S0 it seems the stood the test of time (with me). Considering I normally throw my headphones into a pile of shamble in my coat pocket, this is a welcome feature that'll make sure my headphones are withstanding my tough lifestyle.

    Pros:
    • Superior Audio Quality
    • Durable Metal Housing
    • Carrying-case included
    • 3 sizes of custom silicone tips included (Small, Medium, Large)

    Cons:
    • Rigid headphone cord that lack flexibility
    • No inline microphone
    • Lack of volume controls & talk/answer button

If you are looking for some mid-range quality earphones to compliment your new smartphone that you received for the Fall, you won’t be disappointed with Brainwavz S0 earphones. At a reasonable price of approximately $60, these headphones outperform similar products in the $75-100 range. You can purchase these online from several retailers worldwide, or from Amazon in North America.
