    BlackBerry 10 Fragmentation?

    2. BlackBerry Software

Everyone knows that RIM likes to provide options when it comes to smartphones. Just take a look at the list of Blackberry Devices currently available. That is a grand total of 23 smartphones! And that is excluding all the devices running OS older than 5.0. With a variety of screen resolutions and aspect ratios, you can see why it was such a headache for the average developer to make BB applications. But that is in the past. BlackBerry demonstrated at this year's BlackBerry World Conference that they are "laser focused" on getting BB10 out on time and not only that, but doing it well. We have already seen a preview of what is to come and every day that passes we are getting one step closer to getting BB10 finally in our hands.

A few weeks ago, I came across a blog post from an Android developer who offers an app called "Open Signal Maps." There, they share their views on what fragmentation means to the Android community. They also provide insightful information about the model of the phone, the operating system, and also the screen resolution of the devices that downloaded their app. Although this report is most certainly outdated by now, it still give us plenty to think about.

For starters, let's leave BB7 and older devices in the past. Moving forward, we know that the PlayBook already has the basics of what will ultimately become BlackBerry 10. Other than this, the only other device capable of running BB10 is the Developer Alpha device being distributed at the various BlackBerry Jam Tour locations over the course of this summer.

It can be argued that this already created a bit of fragmentation for BB10 since the DevAlpha has a resolution of 1280x768 in comparison to the 1024x600 screen of the PlayBook. Pixel density is important but let's just note that the difference in pixels is very minimal and could easily be adjusted by a seasoned dev. What is more exciting is that QNX with Cascades is so powerful, a developer can provide "screen profiles" to render GUI elements on the screen dynamically depending on what the detected output is. At the "native track" of the Santa Clara BB10 Jam, it was mentioned that BB10 could essentially detect it was connected to an HDMI 1080p monitor or screen and build a GUI for that resolution if the developer takes the time to add that display profile. Remember the "stereoscopic display" demo back at BlackBerry Mobile World Congress 11? Cascades now makes it possible for any developer to create dynamic display settings for different outputs with minimal effort. It was also hinted that there will be other devices with different aspect ratios and that Developers should take advantage of Cascade's versatility for building elegant and functional GUI's that add to the BlackBerry Flow experience.

So, will there be fragmentation in BB10? You can bet there will be, but rest assured, it will not be as horrendous and as widespread as it is on Android.

RIM has just released a video that goes into how BlackBerry can help Governments, whether big or small, with optimizing by making them more efficient as a functioning body. Everything from Construction crews for fixing and logging jobs, to Law Enforcement in looking up criminal databases via their BlackBerry Smartphone or Tablet. The goal is to use fewer resources, and at the same time increase productivity, so that the taxpayer (you and I) don't have to give our left "you know what" as our next payment to the Government. Perhaps a vote is in for RIM to be our next President?

Could Xbox's SmartGlass See PlayBook/BlackBerry 10 Integration In The Future?

At E3 on Monday, Microsoft unveiled a new feature to be rolled out for its Xbox platform, called Xbox SmartGlass. This allows the transfer of media between your tablet, phone and TV using Xbox video. For example, you could start watching a movie on your tablet while out, easily switch to your TV when you get home, and the movie will resume exactly where you left off.

Once you make the transfer, the phone or tablet is kept up to date with information about the movie such as cast, crew etc., or more involved, such as showing the location of the action on a map of the virtual world.

How does this relate to RIM?

Back in October of last year, a couple concept videos from RIM leaked into the community. These videos showed various concepts that could possibly become reality on BlackBerry devices in the future. Anywhere from seamless integration from BES admin to the end user, to controlling your home security system and more from your Smartphone.

This time around, another video has surfaced via the BlackBerryDE YouTube account. The video is dated 2011, so it may just be one of many more of these first concept videos that have yet to release. In the video, it shows off the future of the customer experience as a young woman uses mobile technology to find her wedding outfit, and buy and communicate with online and offline retailers. The video shows that customers and businesses can use mobile technology to work together more easily and quickly to respond to the customers needs.

What do you think about these concepts? Let us know in the comments!

Note to developers, start paying attention to whether you apps is a battery sucker or not. Why?... Upcoming versions of BlackBerry Device Software version 7.1.0.x introduce a new service that monitors BlackBerry applications for system resource abuse, that cause your battery to drain to quickly. This service is called Application Resource Monitor. The feature will be optional and set to work by default so that any user who installs the OS will automatically be protected by the Application Resource Monitor.

This new feature is designed to help consumers get the most battery life out of their BlackBerry smartphone by closing applications that are abusing resources leading to noticeable battery drain. By developers following certain steps, they can ensure that your application behaves like a good citizen on the device and is never noticed by Application Resource Monitor.

A new version of the Desktop Manager software v7 has officially been released. This one is bundle .60, one tick over the .59 that was available in the Beta Zone recently. No change log added with the update but we can assume this version is a lot better than the one that was previously released and then pulled.
