Things are starting to get exciting once again in the world of BlackBerry. We are starting to hear more and more about this new BBX platform. We got word a couple days ago that new BlackBerry X (BBX) platform, would be announced at the upcoming DevCon in San Francisco. The BBX platform is rumored to be a QNX based OS for the PlayBook and the upcoming QNX based BlackBerry SuperPhones.

Although we have some information regarding the devices BBX will showcase on, there is still much to be determined in regards to its functionality. A photo taken from a recent QNX blog post shows the name BBX in one of the presentation slides talking about QNX Car 2. This is exciting as it helps confirm progress in RIM's next major move.

With QNX based Blackberries coming soon it only makes sense for RIM to announce something like this at the next DevCon. I am excited about this, a fresh name, a new OS, and new devices on the horizon. I like RIM's decision to step out of their traditional OS and device models, and move towards something fresh.

What do you think? Are you excited about BBX?

Security is one of the biggest reasons why so many people choose BlackBerry as their preferred smartphone. Its clear that it rises far beyond the rest of its class in regards to security, and keeping data safe. So when exploits or security loopholes are found it's a big deal. Users want to be protected, and companies need to be ensured their data is protected at all times.

RIM has just updated the BlackBerry Payment Service SDK 1.0 to a new version which adds a great extension to the SDK announced in January. The BlackBerry Payment Service SDK 1.5 enables developers to start offering subscription based services, auto-renewing subscriptions for apps and in-app digital goods.

Developers can easily update to the new version as BlackBerry Payment Service SDK 1.5 leverages the API from 1.0. The new functionality includes checking for status of a subscription and canceling subscriptions. BlackBerry Payment Service manages the subscription renewals and sends out renewal reminders and receipts to users. To benefit from apps with subscription services users will have to download the recently released BlackBerry App World 3.0.

With BlackBerry Payment Service 1.5 developers can adopt a new business model for their apps if they choose to. It includes automatic renewal periods at 7 or 30 days, recurring billing automatically handled by BlackBerry App World, the option to offer incentives to first time subscribers, the convenience of choosing from PayPal, Credit Card or Carrier Billing as payment options. They can also offer premium content or access to a cloud-based service. As an example check out BBM Music which already uses BlackBerry Service SDK 1.5.

Today UberSocial has been updated to version 1.251. Version 1.251 includes the following changes:

    • Direct support for the latest OS 7 BlackBerry devices
    • For BlackBerry OS 6.0 and 7.0 devices we now support the home screen message notification bar so DMs, @replies/mentions and inner circle tweets will show up there for quick access from the device home screen. When you see the mini UberSocial icon, click the bar and the tweets/DMs that caused the notification will be displayed along with a snippet of the tweet. Clicking the tweet snippet will take you directly to it.
    • Fixed bug where tweets would not open on some touch screen devices when you touched them
    • Fixed bug where trending topics descriptions would sometimes overlap in the list.
    • Fixed issue caused by twitter wrapping all URLs with t.co shortened links, this affected twitlonger, tmi.me, myloc.me and mypict.me links
    • List timelines now include retweets
    • Fixed bug where mini-icon would sometimes have a zero next to it
    • Improved load times for the inner circle timeline
    • Mypict.me now respects the picture size that you choose.
    • Profile pictures are now rotated correctly
    • Added 'Login via Browser' as an option when adding more then one account
    • Added multiple retries to the authorization process as the twitter servers appear to timeout or return nothing quite often
    • Added a 'Theme' menu itme so you can easily change themes from the home timeline without going into options
    • Changed the menu text of 'My Timeline' to 'My Tweets' to more accurately reflect the functionality
    • Support for new device screen sizes for installable themes
    • Fixed a theme bug where backgrounds were not being used on all screens, causing tiling of the portrait background
    • Greatly improved timeline scrolling performance on touch screen devices

Most of the changes listed are the same as the previous release. The important point to note is the "Greatly improved timeline scrolling performance on touch screen devices" UberSocial is popular twitter app that allows for an enriched tweeting experience. We have all been there, patiently waiting for that OS update from our carrier. With RIM's Java-based OS carriers have had to test, and retest the OS to allow for network compatibility. These long delays caused by carrier testing have always been a contributer to the slow roll out of updates from RIM.
This has all changed with the implementation of RIM's QNX based OS. QNX allows RIM to separate certain parts of code that often times the carrier would have to test. This separation, and elimination of carrier testing allows for faster OTA updates. This type of update can already be seen in how the BlackBerry PlayBook updates itself. A user is alerted that there is a update for the device, and they simply click on install.
This type of quick updating is absolutely crucial with new devices, as bugs are found all the time shortly after a new release. We have seen affects of quick OTA updates within the PlayBook, as many of those updates have quickly resolved issues, and enhanced the user experience.

What do you think of the new approach to updating? Let us know in the forums.

Earlier this week, BlackBerry Desktop Manager 7 was released in Beta Zone. Many wished that the beta would have been released to a larger audience. Well, some members of OpenSourceBB were able to stripped down the app to no longer need keycode.

Note: Since this is a beta version of BlackBerry Desktop Manager 7, please install at your own risk.

As most of have heard by now, RIM has released the new BBM music feature into the hands of Beta Zone members on a invite only basis. If you happen to be a contact of one of those lucky Beta Zone testers you will see in their profile information that they are indeed using the app. Status updates will also show that they have used the BBM music feature. As seen in the screenshot above, when you click on the BBM Music yellow download arrow it asks if you want to download the BBM Music app from App World. Well, of course when you go to App World it's not available just yet, but this is a great sign that RIM has prepped the access for us to easily reach this app within BBM. Are you one of the lucky Beta testers? Let us know what you think of BBM Music in the comments!

Watch a video in depth comparison of the BlackBerry Bold 9930 running OS 7 vs Apple's iPhone 4 running OS 5. My intention wasn't to cover everything in this video as it would have taken much longer, but the video does cover the main aspects of each device and how the compare to each other. The video is 22 minutes long, so grab a coffee or some popcorn and sit back and enjoy. Any thoughts or questions let us know!

The Wall Street Journal's child website, All Things D, reports that the new BlackBerry Music service will cost $5 a month for 50 songs. These songs can then be shared with friends via BBM. More details include:

    • A full-fledged rollout is planned for the first three territories later this fall.
    • RIM is negotiating global licenses with the music companies, and expects to launch in other territories in 2012; the big idea is to piggyback on the success of RIM’s BlackBerry Messenger service, which has more than 45 million users worldwide.
    • Subscribers won’t be able to export their music to PCs or other hardware, with the exception of RIM’s much-maligned PlayBook tablet.
    • Subscribers will be able to share songs with friends who are also BBM Music subscribers.

The article also suggest a September beta launch...

The music industry sources believe RIM is aiming for a beta launch in the U.S., Canada and the United Kingdom in early September. A RIM rep declined to comment.

    1. Official OS,
    2. BlackBerry Software

Official OS from T-Mobile UK has reached the BlackBerry Bold 9780. If you have a Bold 9780, get out that USB cord and give your a device a fresh OS. Don't forget to drop a comment below and let us know how it's working out for you!

**Currently this update seems to only be showing on Desktop Manager for T-Mobile UK users, but BBH-Plus has created a home made installer for the install**

    1. Install to PC (http://bit.ly/ndsvgo)
    2. Install this over folder using this installer
2a. Shrink your OS if you want
    3. Install to phone
3a. For best results, do 2-3 battery pulls and allow 24-48 hour "settling" time

This is the full OS DM Update.

    - Updated: BBM, Facebook, Twitter, IM apps
