The wait for OS 7.1 is finally over. Earlier in the day we posted that Sprint users were starting to receive OTA's of the new OS 7.1, but there was no official desktop installer. Sprint has now posted the desktop installer for the Torch 9850 OS 7.1.0.163. So if you have a Torch 9850 get out that USB device and give your device a fresh new OS. As always be sure to let us know your findings/fixings.

RIM Officially Rolls Out BlackBerry App World v3.1.0.56

It seems as though RIM is pleased with App Worlds speed and performance adjustements that they made in the beta release just a few days ago. BlackBerry App World version 3.1.0.56 is now showing up as an official release. The biggest changes in the last beta release were to speed and performance. This was a breath of fresh air as we were so used to a slow, lagging App World.

If you're not seeing the update be patient it will come. In the meantime keep checking the official page here.

BlackBerry OS Roadmap To BlackBerry 10?

    Joe Jerde

With recent statements made today in a RIM conference call by co-CEO's, Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie, how should we feel about the BlackBerry OS roadmap to BlackBerry 10? I have a brief theory on what the route will look like.

Let's take a step back for a second. If you remember, the current OS 7 was in line to be called OS 6.1. There were even leaked OS's with the 6.1 branding. However, in the end the OS 7 was the prevailing label due to "enough differences" as stated by co-CEO Jim Balsillie during a Q&A Investors Call back in April.

Now jump back to today. The next significant OS release is slated to be called OS 7.1, but could it become OS 8? Is there enough differences to warrant the jump? No, but given the time we have left via a numerical sequence from 7 to 10 it makes sense. BlackBerry OS 7.1 could simply be a RIM internal name before it becomes public as OS 8. This would put a OS 8 (7.1) release at early Q1 2012, with OS 9 on schedule for Q2/Q3 leaving OS 10 tracking on time for Q3/Q4.

This jives with a alleged leaked roadmap of devices set to launch in 2012 and a statement made by Lazaridis that the BB 10 launch window will come toward "the latter part of 2012." Either way the order ends up, there are going to be some rapid changes for RIM next year. Let's hope for an early Christmas in 2012.

From RIM’s Conference Call: Dual-Core LTE BlackBerrys & CEO Paycuts

In light of RIM's conference call today, not only do we now know that the first BlackBerry 10 devices will run with a dual-core LTE capable chipset, but also RIM's co-CEO's, Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie, will be cutting their annual salaries down to $1.

According to Forbes, Jim and Mike both receive $1,175,664 per year. And while they may not receive annual bonuses, they both receive limited stock awards which investment terms are unknown. Either way, it's good to see them put their money where their mouth is.

Update: The particular chipset RIM hopes to use won’t be available until the middle of 2012. Lazaridis concedes that the launch window for BlackBerry 10 devices will come toward "the latter part of 2012."

@neuralic, one of the DingleBerry creators has just released the video demo above showing the power of the DingleBerry Jailbreak. He demos the Android Market, Android Native Email and Google Apps on his device. However, due to some limitations with the PB Android Player, he was limited to what he could install from the Android Market. Still, this is exiting to see the PlayBook becoming a customizable workhorse as we are exited to see what next the DingleBerry team brings to the PlayBook tablet. He also mentions that they are working on releasing a Jailbreak version that will be more user friendly to install for us laymen out there. We'll keep you updated as more comes in.

Have you been able to root your PlayBook and install some of these cool features?

DingleBerry Jailbreak v2.1 Beta Now Live

Just got word from @cmwdotme that the DingleBerry Jailbreak v2.1 Beta is now live. What does this mean? It means that all firmware versions on the PlayBook can now be rooted. Here are a few words of advice from Chris Wade himself:

Dingleberry 2.1 beta is live. Run this BEFORE upgrading to 6067. Login via devuser and run /tmp/setuidgid root /bin/sh to gain root.
Once you confirm you have root then you can upgrade to 6067 and do the same to gain root. Enjoy.. All firmwares are currently jailbreakable.
If you already upgraded to 6067 then downgrade using my previous post and run Dingleberry 2.1 then upgrade again.
Warning: This download is for experienced users only and is in beta. So please download with caution.

BBX Nixed As BlackBerry 10 Becomes Next Official OS Name

DevCon Asia is currently under way in Singapore and right off the bat one of the biggest news is the new name of the next OS generation on BlackBerry will no longer be BBX but instead BlackBerry 10. We reported a couple of days ago how BASIS had filed a temporary restraining order against RIM for the use of the name BBX. It seems Research In Motion just ultimately wanted to avoid any legal issues with BASIS and has made that X become the roman numeral for 10. This will be the biggest jump in OS numerical value for RIM as they will be going from 7.1 to 10.

I personally have no problem with RIM going back to numerical values for their OS brands. It actually reminds me a little bit more about a certain video that we got to see about RIM's outlook on the future (OS 10.x anyone?).

Now who's going to start re-editing all our articles to say "BlackBerry 10" instead?

This video demonstrates the PlayBook tablet's ability to integrate with a number of prototyping components. What would you do with this feature?

Today the web domain for the DingleBerry PlayBook Jailbreak Project becomes officially known as dingleberry.it. Not much on the site so far besides a link to the Twitter account ran by Chris Wade, AKA @cmwdotme, who seems to be the go to man for the jailbreak project. In case you missed it, we have reported so far the DingleBerry jailbreak rooting the PlayBook, allowing access to Hulu via web browser, and RIM's official statement regarding the jailbreak.
