On Thursday, RIM released an OS update for the BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha device. In this update, users have found that holding down the mute/play button had resulted in a voice that asked 'Please say a command after the beep'. Similar to Siri on Apple's mobile devices, this voice recognition ...

One of the most anticipated forthcoming about BlackBerry 10 is what the native apps are going to look like, and how they will function. We know that TAT (The Astonishing Tribe) have been put in charge of coming up with great user experience and UIs for the native BlackBerry 10 apps. Today, assuming the slides are legit, we have a sneekpeek at the Facebook app on the BlackBerry 10 device!

On the tail of a column written by The Globe and Mail on Tuesday about the latest news surrounding RIM, G&M asked their readers what they thought were the most important questions to ask CEO, Thorsten Heins. G&M picked through the hundreds of questions sent in, and then compiled the top 10 list to submit to Thorsten. Iain Marlow, a writer for G&M has tweeted today that CEO Heins plans to answer each and every one of these 10 questions.

We have already seen quite a few pictures of RIM's upcoming 4G/3G PlayBook. The latest wave of leaked pictures gives us a better idea of how the 4G/3G components will integrate with the PlayBooks OS. Reports are also coming in that the new 4G/3G models will have NFC support, and that users will be able to utilize BlackBerry protect. This is great news, BlackBerry protect is a feature that all users should be familiar with.

In addition, we will most likely see a modified version of PlayBook OS 2.0 to address the needs of 4G/3G radios as well as any other new components RIM decides to release with it. The PlayBook 4G/3G models are expected to be out sometime later this year.

Take a look at the latest pictures and let us know your thoughts. Are you planning on purchasing a 4G/3G capable PlayBook or will you wait for a 10" version that could have mobile network options?

BlackBerry news in the last week has had it's plenty of downs. However, with this less than par news we have gained plenty of new insight into the BlackBerry 10 platform and what it entails. The news has taken us on a roller coaster. From everything about the delay of BlackBerry 10 to Q1 of 2013, to leaked slides showing that there will be both QWERTY and FullScreen BlackBerry 10 devices (L and N Series) at launch.

With the help from an anonymous source, we have gotten our hands on what appears to be a BlackBerry 10 Roadmap for 2013! Boo-ya!! I'll explain more below, but first, here is a quick overview of the roadmap dates:

    • 4G PlayBook - Q4, 2012
    • BlackBerry 10 London/Nevada - Q1, 2013 - Europe launch before N. America
    • BlackBerry 10 Upgrade for PlayBook - Q1/Q2, 2013
    • BlackBerry device codenamed "Nashville" - Q2/Q3, 2013
    • BlackBerry 10 inch PlayBook "Blackforest" - Q3, 2013
    • BlackBerry device codenamed "Naples" - Q3/Q4, 2013

Before we go into what the roadmap is showing us, we were also told that RIM will be launching BlackBerry 10 in Europe 3-4 weeks prior to launching BlackBerry 10 in North America. Don't worry though, both launches will still take place in Q1. The BlackBerry 10 Europe launch is suppose to take place within the first week of January, while the North American launch to follow in the first week of February. The reason behind this, is because the European markets and media outlets have been better receptive to BlackBerry than the "doom and gloom" repetitive bullshit of the North American media outlets. RIM has also had much better success with BlackBerry in general in these other markets. This should give the global market more time to become accustomed to BlackBerry 10 and create the hype it needs to make it's way to the shelves of N. America and elsewhere.

Little has been known in regards to the BlackBerry 10 roadmap besides what we have learned from the delayed launch in the last week during RIM's earnings call. What we have known already is that the 4G LTE PlayBook will be on the market before the year's end. This will usher in the first BlackBerry 10 devices in Q1 of 2013, and PlayBook's running OS 2 will get a upgrade to BlackBerry 10 OS. Probably the best news about being a PlayBook owner you can get.

What really sparks our interest is what we have heard about possible other BB10 devices which names were discovered hidden in the data of the BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha device. These were codenamed "Nashville" and "Naples." The roadmap tells us that the Nashville is tracking between Q2/Q3, and Naples Q3/Q4. As to what these devices are, we are still uncertain, but there has been speculation that they may be variations of the QWERTY N-Series. It would make sense being they all have a codename that starts with the letter N. Or, they could very well be variants of a 7 or 10 inch PlayBook tablet - not enough info yet.

Since the release of the 7 inch PlayBook there has been many speculations and rumors as to when, or if, there will be a 10 inch PlayBook to ever see the market. As far as over a year ago there were rumors that RIM had completely stopped any kind of plans for a 10 inch PlayBook so that they could focus on getting BlackBerry 10 OS out first. This makes sense that we would not see a 10 inch PlayBook hit your happy little hands until BlackBerry 10 is launched. This also means that any tablet launching after Q1 will also come equipped with the BlackBerry 10 OS.

We've known that the device codenamed "Blackforest" has long now been rumored to be the 10 inch BlackBerry tablet. Based on the roadmap, it looks to be tracking for Q3, 2013. There is also the number "128" shown besides the "Blackforest" codename. Could this mean that the first 10 inch PlayBook will come in a 128 GB model!? This could be very well so, as RIM has just nixed the 16 GB model, citing that less of memory is just not going to be relevant anymore as they continue their focus on higher capacity models. As apps and OS content continues to become more jam packed rich, I think seeing a 128 GB tablet hit the market in Q3 of 2013 makes a whole lot of sense!

It looks like 2013 is going to be RIM's year for a chance as the comeback kid. I'm hoping to see when we attend the main BlackBerry Jam event this September in San Jose, that more light will be shed on BlackBerry 10 and the many questions coming from the community. I'm still hoping that in some ways this roadmap isn't true, and RIM will surprise us with a early BlackBerry 10 release in Q4 of this year. Either way, keep it here for any updates to the upcoming BlackBerry 10 launch!

Last week, we showed you some early mockups of potential BlackBerry 10 App World interfaces from Research In Motion and we had some suggestions within our forums as to what features some users were interested in for BlackBerry App World. Since the BlackBerry PlayBook was release in April 2011, we have seen several different versions of BlackBerry App World. As a user and a developer for the BlackBerry platform, here are a few features that I feel are ‘must-haves’ which would significantly improve the user experience within BlackBerry App World.

This morning, Thorsten Heins spoke during a company wide meeting at Research In Motion about everything BlackBerry. The meeting was around two hours long and covered pretty much every topic, from the delay of BlackBerry 10 to what will happen in the meantime.

The delay in BlackBerry 10 has been caused by a number of things. A few of these reasons were covered in the earnings call and in the press release yesterday but the meeting this morning helped expand a little more what we heard before.

Now just as a little disclaimer, I hated yesterday. I was disappointed and angry and frankly I still am at RIM management for not being straight forward with us from the beginning (This article will not address that). Nevertheless, after a day of thinking and learning more about the situation, I understand why the decision was taken to push BlackBerry 10 back.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas within the BlackBerry community. Yesterday, we shared with you some leaked BlackBerry 10 L and N-series UI specs. Today, more information has surfaced that depicts what the BBM messaging application may look like.

According to yet another leaked internal document, BBM on the new BB 10 devices will have the ability to utilize themes. According to the document, changing the theme to a black theme can decrease battery consumption by approximately 25%. In addition, further optimizing the screen for the OLED-display decreases battery consumption by 75% compared to the direct translation.

This is some good news. I'm liking the fluid interface of the BBM chat windows on the L-series BB 10 device.

More rumors are rolling in now about the future of Research In Motion. The latest rumor coming from Reuters and The Sunday Times suggests RIM execs are looking into possibly splitting the company into two separate entities, one focused on hardware manufacturing and the other on their messaging platform.

According to the rumor, Research In Motion has a couple of suitors which include Facebook (nothing new here) and Amazon as potential buyers for their hardware division.

Again, like with any rumor, it's only speculation until RIM confirms it and with the huge amount of focus that's been put on the BlackBerry 10 platform, rumors such as this one should be taken with a grain of salt.

Could you see RIM splitting up its hardware and software divisions as a positive or negative? Let us know in the comments!

    J. Duke from OSBB just gave me a heads up on a little YouTube video that's been making its way through the web. According to the video, there is an emulator being worked on called Brine that will allow us PlayBook users to run iOS apps on our tablets.

Before everyone starts jumping up and down of excitement there are some things to keep in mind. Apple hates this kind of stuff, so you can bet anything that the evil fruit will be making it near impossible for the developer to get this released. Does that mean it wont happen? Not necessarily, as there are always ways to get things released.

There are definitely going be restrictions as to what apps can work on this emulator too (example: apps that use the camera wont work).

We'll keep you guys updated with more information as soon as we get it about this cool emulator. For now enjoy the video above and let us know what you think in the comments!

One of the most interesting things about this BlackBerry 10 Jam World Tour that's going on right now is learning who will show up and from what companies. Well today, Mikel Calderon who is attending BlackBerry 10 Jam in Santa Clara, California, sent out the above tweet that made a lot of people crack a little smile. Apparently, Skype does like BlackBerry a little.

Whether we want to actually use Skype to video chat or simply realize that an app of that importance is essential to a successful ecosytem, we all want Skype on BlackBerry 10. Unfortunately thus far, no Skype app has been developed for the PlayBook and much like with Netflix, nothing has been confirmed for BlackBerry 10 yet either. Obviously, we're all pretty sad about it.

Now, does the fact that they showed up to BlackBerry 10 Jam today mean that we'll have a Skype app for BlackBerry 10 for sure? No, it doesn't. But it doesn't hurt when you think about it. One of the things I've always complained about is how certain companies aren't even giving RIM a chance to show them what BlackBerry 10 can bring and if they did, they would be impressed.

Well, this is exactly what Skype seems to be doing at least. They were willing to send a developer/representative out there today and actually check out what RIM has to say about BB10.

Hopefully, this can be the first step in a great partnership between RIM and Skype/Microsoft for the benefit of all future BlackBerry 10 users.

Back in October of last year, a couple concept videos from RIM leaked into the community. These videos showed various concepts that could possibly become reality on BlackBerry devices in the future. Anywhere from seamless integration from BES admin to the end user, to controlling your home security system and more from your Smartphone.

This time around, another video has surfaced via the BlackBerryDE YouTube account. The video is dated 2011, so it may just be one of many more of these first concept videos that have yet to release. In the video, it shows off the future of the customer experience as a young woman uses mobile technology to find her wedding outfit, and buy and communicate with online and offline retailers. The video shows that customers and businesses can use mobile technology to work together more easily and quickly to respond to the customers needs.

What do you think about these concepts? Let us know in the comments!
