RIM May Be Close To Picking JPMorgan As Stategic Adviser

Research In Motion is looking for connections in the business world. Whether that is through partnerships, financial advisers, or other means has yet to be seen. This morning, Bloomberg is reporting that RIM is close to bringing on JPMorgan Chase & Co. to help analyse the company strategic options and where their next step should be.

According to their unnamed source, "RIM would prefer to license its BlackBerry mobile operating system," even though they are "racing to put the final touches on a new platform, known as BB10, and release the first smartphone built on the software later this year."

A decision about a possible deal with JPMorgan could be officially announced within the next few days, but with BlackBerry World less than two weeks away, we wouldn't be surprised to see/hear the announcement pushed back until after the event.

The BlackBerry Beta Zone Will Be Getting A Makeover Next Week

I love the Beta Zone, it's no secret. I think it's been extremely underrated over the last year or so and is quite frankly one of the few things RIM has done correctly. Today, RIM has sent out an email announcing the split of the Beta Zone that will be coming very soon. The split will be separating the enterprise and consumer based beta apps into two separate sites. This is definitely a welcome change for Beta Zone employees and users alike.

Also, according to our little sources, the new Beta Zone will have a different look and feel. It will be more along the lines of a blog and will be a lot more user-friendly for those of us that frequent it. The new sites are rumored to be launching next Tuesday (#TwosDay!), April 24th.

Check out the email from the BlackBerry Beta Zone below!
BlackBerry Beta Zone has grown significantly since its launch nearly three years ago and we are pleased to inform you that it will be evolving soon to better suit both consumers and business members who participate regularly in BlackBerry beta programs. BlackBerry Beta Zone will soon have a brand new sub-site, BlackBerry Beta Zone for Business, focusing on beta programs for business software and services. BlackBerry Beta Zone for Business will offer:

Business specific beta programs and content
    An improved mobile browsing experience
    Updated community features
The update is expected to occur in the coming weeks and requires no action on your part. While logged into BlackBerry Beta Zone for Business, you will be able to access all your business beta programs on behalf of your organization. Your existing BlackBerry Beta Zone account remains valid for consumer beta programs as well.

After the update, the URLs for BlackBerry Beta Zone will be as follows:

BlackBerry Beta Zone – Business: www.blackberry.com/businessbeta
BlackBerry Beta Zone – Consumer: www.blackberry.com/beta

Once logged in to either site, switching between business and consumer is simple, seamless, and will not require another login.

We are very excited for the changes coming to BlackBerry Beta Zone and we look forward to your continued participation in BlackBerry beta programs.

Should you have any questions, please reply or contact us at enterprisebeta@rim.com.

    Best regards,

App World Gets Flooded With Free 9220 Apps - Official Launch Soon

This morning I woke up to an awesome little tip that got my day started off right. Apparently in the wee hours of the morning, BlackBerry has released a ton of free apps for the, still unreleased, Curve 9220.

Now we've seen a lot of specs talk when referring to the 9220 and while it's not the sexiest BlackBerry to date, we feel it'll still be a huge asset to maintaining RIM's dominance in the world's developing countries market. These 8 free apps aren't a huge deal but it's definitely nice to see RIM step up and give these new Curve owners a few cool apps to get started for free.

    Thanks for the tip Ashley!

[UPDATE] In terms of release date, we keep hearing April 18th as a possible announcement/release date in India. Obviously, only time will tell how accurate these rumors turn out to be but it's safe to say some of you guys will be able to enjoy the 9220 very, very soon!

Here We Go Again With The BBM On Android Rumors

If you get queasy easily please do not look at the above picture. It's true, the sight of what looks like a BBM app running on what's probably an Android device makes me nauseous and I'm sure many of you feel the same way. Unfortunately today, this pic has been leaked by Techno Buffalo. According to their source, BBM will be making its way to iOS and Android by the end of the year as a part of Mobile Fusion, which we could definitely see happening. It would be yet another tool that RIM could leverage and flex as a reason for Mobile Fusion to be endorsed.

Details are obviously scarce and since we haven't had a rumor like this pop up in some time, it's good to not panic and take all of this with multiple giant, enormous grains of salt.

One Man's Opinion On The New Palm Pixi - Ahem! - I Mean BlackBerry 10 TK2 Victory Concept

So, before the flaming starts, there is no denying that the new concept design BlackBerry, dubbed BlackBerry 10 TK2 Victory, resembles the form factor of the newer Palm device series. Let's just clear the air on that. When I first laid eyes on the mock-up images, all I could think of was holding a stylus pen in hand while using the device (not necessarily a bad thing).

I do like the idea of the bigger screen to satisfy the full-screen users, while jamming in some physical keys to satisfy the physical keyboard junkies. But is it really a winning design? I say probably not. Why? Because it looks like a man with a undersized body and a overgrown head trying to do a back-flip! Not going to be easy (nothing against big heads, I have one myself). And there are some negative side affects to having such a large screen with a regular sized keypad. It renders the one-handed usage primarily to the bottom of the touchscreen only. No more single hand high stretches to reach that touch sensitive content up top, as you'll have to let go of the keyboard and double hand it without that trackpad. So, unless you have the fingers of a 7 foot tall basketball player, I'd opt for a smaller design.

[BB10 TK2 concept device next to Palm Pixi Plus]

However, easier said than done, right? I'm not saying I could come up with something better (see my mediocre unfinished mockup), but I do feel that overall form fumbles function in this BB 10 TK2 concept. Which is why it is a concept, right? I do like the inset sleep/power button though. And kudos to the graphic artist, Guy Bridges, who went through the pains of putting this concept together for us BlackBerry 10 thirsty addicts till the next juicy piece of material comes around for us to sink our opinions into. Stay tuned for my next rant...

Agree or disagree? Let me know what you think about the BlackBerry 10 TK2 concept device in the comments!

BlackBerry PlayBook 4G Makes Another Appearance

We have know for a while that RIM has been working on another version of the PlayBook, and that it would have 3G and 4G capabilities. Now more visual information has leaked regarding the 4G device. A user over at the crackberry forums recently released some pictures of what he claims is a PlayBook 4G device.

We already know that with any leaked pictures a little skepticism is always there. You can see from the picture above that it shows where the SIM card would be placed. It may seem like a convenient location, but I can see some potential issues with cramming too much stuff in the loading area. Perhaps someplace on the sides may be a better fit.

If RIM Isn't Abandoning Consumer Markets But No One Knows About It, Does It Still Count?

    AgentBlackBerry
    Published on 03-30-2012 07:12 PM

    2. BlackBerry Rumors

Today I went by my local AT&T store, where they know me as "the BlackBerry guy," and one of the reps said to me, "you know RIM is done with consumers officially now right?" I smiled, pulled out my BlackBerry and went to the Inside BlackBerry post about RIM not leaving consumer markets, which I've now bookmarked, and let him read it. "How come the news is reporting the opposite though?"

Well it's painfully obvious the slew of bad reporting about RIM's business strategy continues to spread. Unfortunately, it seems aside from tweets and a blog post on Inside BlackBerry, RIM is not really doing much to combat this trend. Major news outlets (not only small blog sites like BGR or techcrunch, we're talking MSN, ABC; etc), are reporting news as if RIM will no longer be making phones for regular people like you and I. The headline grabbing "RIM Surrenders Consumer Markets To iPhone" title was probably the one I hated the most, to be honest.

After the debacle that occurred yesterday, someone from their PR team should have gotten enough people together to make personal phone calls to all these media outlets today to inform them the actual news: Research In Motion will not be leaving the consumer market.

True, these news outlets have done a terrible job of fact-checking before getting their articles and radio shows out, but I can't help but wonder why it's still so palpable that RIM is just staying quiet and letting this carry on and snowball.

With time, all of these people will have to backtrack on their stories. When BlackBerry World comes around and/or when the first BlackBerry 10 device is announced (which will obviously be geared towards the general public), they have to suddenly explain why RIM is making products for consumers again. They will look stupid and their credibility will take a hit.

Until then though, guess who is going to suffer even more because of this? RIM. If you thought they didn't sell a lot of smartphones in Q4, wait until we see what happens when carrier reps starting going around telling potential buyers that BlackBerry isn't making phones for them anymore, like my AT&T rep did to me. Hopefully this doesn't turn out as bad as the 3-day BlackBerry outage back in October of last year. RIM cannot afford another BB-gate, not now or ever again.

What RIM's Fourth-Quarter Results Really Mean

    by
    ice2921
    Published on 03-26-2012 03:17 PM
    Categories:
    1. BlackBerry News,
    2. BlackBerry Rumors

On Thursday RIM's CEO Thorsten Heins will be releasing RIM's fourth-quarter results to the public, and his first as RIM's new CEO. As analysts and investors hurry to write off another poor quarter there are other things that need to be considered before this one is counted as a loss. RIM's marketing and financial dismay has been a hot topic on Wall Street over past year.

The cry for change by some may have been answered earlier this year when RIM's then Co-CEO's Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis stepped down. The replacement Chief Operating Officer Thorsten Heins, vowed to improve the current situation by increasing market value, but still embraced the philosophy of his predecessors of "not sacrificing long-term value for short-term gain".

Whether or not that philosophy is key to RIM's success will be determined over the next few quarters, but not this one. The bottom line is that Mr. Heins's simply has not had adequate time to turn a large company like RIM around.

    Impractical Expectations

Unrealistic expectations fuel most of the impracticable views of RIM. There are two views that shape RIM, and they are from two completely different spectrum's. The two views can be further broken down into two groups The BlackBerry Community, and Financial Investors, the latter of the two being the driving force behind RIM's public image. The fact is that investors simply look at where the dollar is today they don't care about hopes and dreams or what could happen they care about whats going on in Wall Street right now with the dollar.

The BlackBerry community on the other hand looks beyond the financial circumstances and are more concerned about what a device can offer them. Apps, games, utilities, social connections, and functionality mold the opinions of this group. Although the cost of devices does factor in at times, it's not necessarily the underlying factor of their perception of a company.

The problem is the expectations and opinions of investors and bankers trump those of the BlackBerry community, but isn't that the way its supposed to be. Not necessarily there was a time were the BlackBerry community was larger than it is today, and had a much bigger impact on how the public viewed RIM. The larger the community the better chance of survival devices have of succeeding.

    The Doom And Gloom Blues

Let's just forget about the doom and gloom blues for a second and focus back on the bigger picture. Change takes time, and before people start writing RIM off they need to remember the old cliché " Rome was not built in a day" neither was RIM. The fact is, changes on this level take days, months, and sometimes even years.

Yes, we all know that RIM delayed the BlackBerry 10 devices. Let RIM take their time releasing a superior device to the masses that will blow out the competition. Let developers take their time reviewing and analyzing the device so they can create high quality apps and get familiar with a new UI.

We already know that RIM is giving BlackBerry 10 Jam attendees a prototype device. In addition, the BB 10 Native SDK, WebWorks SDK, Adobe Air SDK, and Android SDK will also be available. So what does this mean. It means that developers only have a few months to get familiar with BB 10. Considering we are expected to see a BB 10 device later in the year, is it really enough time for developers to get familiar with BB 10?

    A New Start

RIM has a new start, and it began at the top, and they need time to get off the ground. That new start is BB 10, the excitement and the interest from the public is there once again. BB 10 is chance for RIM to really take advantage of the public's interest. Maybe RIM instead of releasing just one super phone release two, and leave us wanting more, perhaps even announce a series.

Gaining momentum and rolling with it will be key for RIM to bounce back. Yes, RIM will most likely announce some missed targets, but it's still early for the new team at RIM.

BlackBerry Blade, The Start Of BlackBerry 10?

(BB Blade Is A Mockup. It Is Not A Rumored Device)

BlackBerry 10, as we all know, is just around the corner and that is the reason why a lot of rumors and speculations have been circling around the BB World. One of the latest mockups to hit the internet is the BlackBerry Blade that looks like it could be the next BlackBerry 10 device.

Rumors say that the BlackBerry 10 OS and will provide many new features that will beat the iPhone. This awesome appearance and design concept of this mockup was created by a known design firm in Toronto named Pixelcarve. It has a very slick design with a slightly curved body and a slide that is said to be very unique and interesting to look at. The QWERTY keypad is there, the trackpad and of course the BlackBerry menu buttons.

Below are some of the rumoured specifications the Blackberry Blade holds:

    • Quad Core : 1.5 GHz processor
    • 4.5 inch AMOLED display with 720x1280 pixels
    • 12MP back camera and a 5MP front camera
    • Supports 3G, 4G LTE and the Wi-Fi hotspots feature

There is still no confirmation from RIM that the Blackberry Blade concept is similar to the first BB 10 device, however, as per Pixelcarves, they are suggesting to have this design as the first device for BlackBerry 10. Lots of ideas and concepts are available on the internet but, they are just speculations from BlackBerry users/enthusiasts. BlackBerry 10 is still in progress and being discussed by RIM's Management. What concerns us now is when are they going to release it.

Do you have any insights about what will be the look of the upcoming BlackBerry 10?

BlackBerry 10 Will Be Coming To The PlayBook

Raise your hand if you didn't think this was coming? No one? Okay good. It's been fairly obvious to many that RIM is trying to unite all their device OSes into one single operating system that crosses whatever form factor they may be on.

We all knew that the PlayBook Tablet OS was a stepping stone for the future release of BlackBerry 10. Naturally this would mean that the PlayBooks themselves would also be a part of that future joined OS family.

Research In Motion VP of product management, Rob Orr, recently told TechRadar, "We've said publicly a number of times that our first BB10 handset will be available towards the end of 2012, and that's still firmly the case. At some point after the launch we'll bring BB10 to our PlayBooks, yes"

Now this is pretty huge. I mean we started with OS 1.0 then we got OS 2.0 and we know we'll be getting OS 2.1 or maybe 3.0 (depending on what they call it) and now we'll be getting a fourth OS on our devices that will be the "revolutionary one". BlackBerry OS 6 smartphone owners understand how important it is to be able to have a device that brings with it multiple future major OS upgrades.

We still don't know everything that's in the works for BlackBerry 10 but it definitely sounds like we got some good things coming to those of us with a PlayBook as well.

The Game Developers Conference is currently underway in San Francisco and a couple of interesting things have been popping up, even from RIM. The above picture was taken by the guys over at SemiAccurate and it apparently shows a BlackBerry Torch 9850/60 being used as a controller on a game played with the PlayBook.

We're assuming this is possible through the Bridge app and a bit of magical engineering added to it as well. Nevertheless, this could bread an entirely different side of game on the BlackBerry PlayBook in the near future. Hopefully we'll get more info about this in the coming days.
