First day BlackBerry PlayBook sales exceed expectations

Further conflicting news come forward on the early sales of the BlackBerry PlayBook as Zach Epstein from BGR reports market data that may, or may not, surprise you:

Amid multiple reports to the contrary, RBC Capital Markets General Manager Mike Abramsky on Wednesday said first day PlayBook sales likely exceeded analysts’ expectations. In a note to investors, Abramsky states that RIM may have moved about 50,000 PlayBook tablets on launch day alone, including pre-order sales. The analyst and his team placed calls to 70 different Best Buy, Staples and RadioShack locations to inquire about PlayBook sales performance on launch day. Reported performance ranged from light sales in some locations to sell-outs, which occurred at 11% of the stores RBC polled. RBC also used Best Buy’s online inventory tool to check stock at 180 additional locations in 10 major U.S. cities, and found that the 16GB PlayBook is unavailable at 13% of stores, the 32GB model is unavailable at 87% of stores and the 64GB model is unavailable at 91% of the locations viewed. As preliminary inventory quantities for these stores is currently unknown, this information is of little use since many stores might not have received higher-capacity PlayBook models to begin with. Finally, Abramsky notes that the PlayBook may have outperformed first-day sales of Motorola’s XOOM and even Samsung’s popular Galaxy Tab, and he believes RIM is on track to sell 500,000 PlayBook tablets in its first quarter of availability.
How well do you think the PlayBook will do? Any predictions?

BlackBerry Curve Touch to be revealed at BlackBerry World - June-July launch?

Details emerge today surrounding the GSM twin to the upcoming Malibu - which will be a CDMA BlackBerry Curve Touch with a possible launch come late fall. BGR got information from a trusted source that:

"the device featured T-Mobile branding and would be unveiled at BlackBerry World next month. Compared to the rest of the 2011 Curve lineup, the device is actually a much smaller full touchscreen Curve. It’s similar to the BlackBerry Touch, with the same proportions as the BlackBerry Orlando (Curve with a touchscreen and full QWERTY keyboard) and the BlackBerry Apollo that we leaked back in January. The GSM BlackBerry Curve Touch will launch around June or July"

BBM for PlayBook via BlackBerry Bridge, "coming within a few weeks"

A lot of you BlackBerry users out there were very eager today as you grabbed hold of your new Tablet to try out the cornerstone feature of 'Social BlackBerry' - the BlackBerry Messenger app. But only eyes of disappointment set in for users as BlackBerry Messenger is not yet available on the PlayBook via BlackBerry Bridge. CrackBerry was able to get a hold of RIM about this. RIM answered:

…a software update for BBM functionality is expected to be available within a few weeks, and customers will be able to download the software update over-the-air.
Are you one of the disappointed? Should RIM have had BBM set in place on launch?

Gartner: Windows Phone to overtake BlackBerry in 2013, iOS in 2015

    by
    Joe Jerde
    Published on 04-07-2011 08:21 PM

Gartner is now predicting that Windows Phone will be the second smartphone OS in terms of marketshare behind Android OS as of 2015, but overtaking BlackBerry in 2013, and then iOS in 2015. This report basically mirrors last week’s IDC prediction. Why such a prediction?

This bold claim is essential based on the same assumption that because Nokia is dropping Symbian in favor of Windows Phone 7 (and future versions of Windows Phone) then Microsoft’s mobile OS will get a gigantic boost in consumer adoption in the coming years.

Once again, all these predictions assume that nothing major will happen between now and then. But what about Gartner/IDC prior predictions? Do they add credibility, or just hot air? In 2007 iPhone released - Gartner/IDC were wrong about it's marketshare in 2011. In 2008 Android released - Gartner/IDC were wrong about it's marketshare in 2011. In 2010 Windows 7 Phone released - Now Gartner/IDC are suddenly geniuses at predicting marketshare in 2013 and 2015? I think not. In fact, all reports show that BlackBerry continues to shine and surpass expectations, including predictions that the PlayBook will the the second best selling tablet this year.

    BlackBerry 2011 Software Roadmap leaked

We've been bombarded over the last few months with leaked information of upcoming devices. Until recently, the upcoming software roadmap had been absent. That all changed today with N4BB getting a leaked copy of the roadmap.

Some of the updates/apps have already been released, & have actually been within the timelines on this roadmap.

One things that stick out to me would be the app updates in May that say OS6.1!

The updated OS is near? Who knows!

But November seems to be a clear indication of OS 7, which I personally hope is QNX-based.

T-Mobile’s BlackBerry Bold 9700 rumored official OS6 update

BGR apparently heard from several sources that T-Mobile has launched an official OS6 update for Bold 9700. Like mentioned in the Beta Zone, it seems the version is 6.0.0.448.

As of right now, users are seeing this update only thru Desktop Manager.

Have any of you been able to successfully update?

NEW: BlackBerry Messenger to launch on Android and iPhone!

An exclusive coming from BGR from their sources is that RIM is planning to bring BlackBerry Messenger app and service to the Android and iOS. This means that Tablets from Google's Android OS and Apple's iOS will be running BBM as well. Sources report that RIM has not yet finalized details surrounding timing or pricing, and might make the software free to all users. Strategy is still being developed, and RIM may end up charging users a one-time fee or even a recurring fee for access to its BBM service on third-party platforms.

As far as what Android and iOS users can look forward to, well, sources say that RIM will offer stripped down versions of the BBM which means that the potential for millions more users will be able to communicate cross-platform via BlackBerry Messenger. But depending on the limits that RIM puts on a simplified version, they might not be able to share photos, location, or videos, ect. Users who want the full BlackBerry Messenger experience will still need a BlackBerry. BGR also reports:

Right now, we have heard that Android is definitely a go. But again, we’re not sure on timing, though our sources are confident that it will launch some time this year. RIM chose Android first because of the fact that it could develop and integrate something like this much easier with an open platform, but the plan is to build and deploy an iOS version at some point as well.
Would bringing BBM to devices other than BlackBerry push you away from RIM, or bring you closer?

April 10th: BlackBerry PlayBook launch date?!?

Although slightly past the original expected timeframe of Q1 2011, it seems numerous sources are claiming that the PlayBook will see a retail launch on April 10th,2011.

No word yet if this is a USA or Worldwide launch.

If this information is correct, it will be coming out exactly a month after the iPad 2. Not exactly an ideal launch date if the market is saturated with Apple's launch.

ShopSavvy reports that BlackBerry users have been bugging them to port their app over to BlackBerry for over two years now with no results, but... hope may have hit today. According to ShopSavvy’s flurry logs someone in Waterloo, Ontario (city where RIM's headquarters is based) has been running ShopSavvy for Android on various BlackBerry devices. Here are the details:

    • BlackBerry 8300 ran ShopSavvy on January 31, 2011
    • BlackBerry 8600 ran ShopSavvy on January 17 and 24, 2011
    • BlackBerry 8520 ran ShopSavvy on February 7, 2011

There have been numerous reports that BlackBerry’s new PlayBook tablet is going to support Android apps. Seeing that the BlackBerry OS can support Java Virtual Machines, it would be pretty easy to port Android apps to a BlackBerry device.

Shop Savvy also reports that several blogs suggested they didn’t believe this since they didn’t include the Flurry logs, so you can see the Flurry logs here.
