Seasons greetings, y'all. I hope this holiday season is treating you and your families with all the merriness that comes with this time of year. There hasn't been much news in regards to the BlackBerry Porsche Design P'9981, but Harrods in the United Kingdom has officially priced this delightful phone at £1,275. While the price is steep, we're hoping that its abilities and awesomeness out-weighs the wallet emptying capabilities. If you're fortunate enough to lay your hands on a P'9981, please share the pros and cons with the other BBOS members. You may be able to persuade a few others to buy one themselves! Or the other option of course, is to send one to yours truly. My birthday is coming up, you know! The rumor was that the device would be released late December, and if my calendar is correct, we've reached the time it should be released. Hopefully news will surface that the BlackBerry Porsche Design P'9981 has hit the shelves in upcoming days!

RIM Slanderers Beware As Judge Rules Against Blogger Source Protection

You can talk the talk, but can you walk the walk? This month a Judge ruled against a blogger in a libel case of $2.5 million in a defamation case tried in a federal court in Oregon. Crystal Cox, who calls herself an investigative blogger who is also a journalist, wrote repetitively about the bankruptcy case of Summit Accommodations. Kevin Padrick, an Oregon attorney with Obsidian Finance Group, was appointed trustee in charge of paying Summit creditors. Cox accused Padrick of committing tax fraud, among other things. Padrick sued Cox and won a unanimous jury verdict. According to published reports, there wasn't any evidence that Padrick did anything wrong. Cox tried to use the Shield Law, which allows journalists to protect confidential sources, but the Judge ruled Cox was not a journalist and so is not entitled to the protections. This case is of most interest in both the blogosphere and in the media, as it outlines the continued growth of blogging, the gray area between journalists and bloggers and more libel cases born out of blog posts.

So why am I writing about this defamation case today? And what does it have to do with BlackBerry? Well, first off, it's a most important story that affects the entire blogging community. Secondly, this ruling comes right before yet another recent un-verified sourced rumor about BlackBerry maker, RIM (Research In Motion), started by tech-blog site, BGR (Boy Genius Report). Essentially, BGR has on numerous occasions posted articles such as, RIM discontinuing WiFi PlayBook (RIM response here), Open Letter From Disgruntled RIM Employee (RIM response here), more disgruntled RIM employee letters, and the most recent, BlackBerry 10 is a failure that won’t be able to compete, company source says (RIM response here)...

Research In Motion's Response To BGR: Anonymous Claim Inaccurate And Uninformed

Slander - (n.) The action or crime of making a false spoken statement damaging to a person's reputation or (v.) To make false and damaging statements about (someone). It seems bloggers nowadays sometimes feel that they can spew out unfounded and inaccurate statements about a company, like Research In Motion, and not expect a type of rebuttal. Dangerous territory if you ask me.

The highly biased and mostly inaccurate site Boy Genius Report published an "article," if you could even call it that, this morning with the incredibly catchy title "BlackBerry 10 is a failure that won't be able to compete, company source says." Many blogs, including our own, choose to, at times ignore these articles that are based solely on "unknown, mysterious, or anonymous sources" for obvious reasons. This is specifically backed up by the fact that a site like BGR has been wrong so many times about so many things that aren't even about the BlackBerry OS environment (example: BGR reported Sprint would be getting an exclusive iPhone 5 the same day of the announcement of the iPhone 4S, that never happened).

This latest cycle of hogwash posted by the so-called Boy Genius, talks about how a high-ranking RIM official has told them that they haven't able to integrate its core email, calendar and messenger features into BlackBerry 10 yet. The source then stated that “email and PIM [is better] on an 8700 than it is on BlackBerry 10.” Interesting considering the fact that the same source had just stated these functions weren't working on BlackBerry 10.

Hours afterwards, RIM responded via their Twitter account @BlackBerry with the above tweet and link referring everyone back to the investors conference call from last week. During this conference call, RIM's co-CEOs mentioned how the delay in the release of these BlackBerry 10 devices are due to the fact that the company is waiting on a more power-efficient LTE chipset which will be released mid-2012.

Research In Motion is sticking to their guns by refuting these claims and frankly, I love it. In this case, silence can be interpreted as consent so it was necessary, although incredibly annoying, the fact that RIM had to respond to these slanderous claims. Personally, I would love to see RIM sue the pants off of a site like BGR as these statements are directly meant to hurt the reputation of a company without hard proof. Anyone can just come up with a fake anonymous high ranking source and that should not be tolerated.

With last night's BBM Ugly Sweaters Event in New York City we got to see first hand how passionate and dedicated the BlackBerry community is. The BlackBerry PlayBook is a device that, even though it's been released for a little bit, is still way ahead of the competition in terms of pure specs. If RIM can figure out how to bring these two aspects together seamlessly in February with the release of OS 2.0 for the PlayBook, we're confident the future will look brighter for our community and the BlackBerry brand as a whole.

Does RIM's Success Mean Abandoning The BlackBerry?

Suggesting that RIM needs to ditch its BlackBerry handset business seems to be quickly gaining favor among a small amount of RIM's shareholders. It may seem like a bold statement, but that's what technology experts and investors are saying.

Poor sales and decreasing stock value have gotten many investors a little nervous about the future of RIM. Jaguar Financial an activist shareholder for the company stated that the "road map to value restoration lies in a sale of RIM whether as a whole or in separate parts," These parts to include its handset business. Jaguar also suggested a change within RIM's leadership stating that the company needed a new "transformational" leader.

Let's face it, we have heard these kind of bold predictions and statements before. What makes this one any different from the ones we have heard?

One of the areas in which BlackBerry has been struggling severely is marketing its products. BlackBerry 7 smartphones have completely gone under the radar for many, as commercials, posters and general advertisement has been completely lacking in the U.S. markets, including even carrier stores. One of the only BlackBerry commercials we've seen in the U.S. has been this Torch 2 9810 commercial from AT&T the day after the release of the Bold 9900. All of us die hard BlackBerry fans have been extremely disappointed, to say the least, about the lack of carrier cooperation towards advertisement for our new devices.

With the last conference call getting many worried about the future of BlackBerry, a $100 million advertising budget was promised for Q4 of 2011 in order to help boost sales of both BlackBerry devices and PlayBook tablets. I know, I'm thinking the same thing, this should've been done back in Q3 or Q2 instead but at least something is getting done.

Many have, rightfully, wondered where this huge advertising budget would go. If you think about it for example, most movie advertising campaigns are, on average, around $50-$60 million. If RIM is going to be investing almost double the average in one quarter it should suggest that we will be bombarded with BlackBerry "stuff" over the next couple of months.

One of the first avenues in which RIM is inserting the BlackBerry brand is the NBA. The basketball season will officially get started this Sunday, December 25th with a series of extremely highly anticipated games throughout the day. The 3 main ones (ORL vs OKC, MIA vs DAL, and LA vs CHI) will be sponsored by BlackBerry. There have been a couple of commercials being aired which show off the logo a little better and we're hoping to see an increase in these as the day gets closer.

This to me is extremely exciting. I personally have never been a fan of BlackBerry sponsoring concerts or obscure events that most people will never watch. This ends up being completely the opposite as these games are going to be extremely popular in the U.S. specially. As a die-hard Miami Heat fan I will be glued to the TV on Sunday rooting for the Heat and waiting to see how much BlackBerry "stuff" we see all around.
    • Will you be watching the NBA tip off on Christmas Day?

BlackBerry OS Roadmap To BlackBerry 10?

With recent statements made today in a RIM conference call by co-CEO's, Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie, how should we feel about the BlackBerry OS roadmap to BlackBerry 10? I have a brief theory on what the route will look like.

Let's take a step back for a second. If you remember, the current OS 7 was in line to be called OS 6.1. There were even leaked OS's with the 6.1 branding. However, in the end the OS 7 was the prevailing label due to "enough differences" as stated by co-CEO Jim Balsillie during a Q&A Investors Call back in April.

Now jump back to today. The next significant OS release is slated to be called OS 7.1, but could it become OS 8? Is there enough differences to warrant the jump? No, but given the time we have left via a numerical sequence from 7 to 10 it makes sense. BlackBerry OS 7.1 could simply be a RIM internal name before it becomes public as OS 8. This would put a OS 8 (7.1) release at early Q1 2012, with OS 9 on schedule for Q2/Q3 leaving OS 10 tracking on time for Q3/Q4.

This jives with a alleged leaked roadmap of devices set to launch in 2012 and a statement made by Lazaridis that the BB 10 launch window will come toward "the latter part of 2012." Either way the order ends up, there are going to be some rapid changes for RIM next year. Let's hope for an early Christmas in 2012.

First Picture Of BlackBerry Milan (Slider Device) Leaked

The guys over at Crackberry have gotten their hands on a gem. The picture above is according to them the next generation BlackBerry 10 slider device codenamed "Milan." The device answers a few questions we've all been wondering about. Would there be a device with a keyboard on it? What would the keyboard be like?

The screen is beautiful and big and although no specs have been given, the Milan, like all other BlackBerry 10 devices, is said to have better screen display than the iPhone's retina display and other great features. This picture also shows us how we will no longer have buttons (aside from the keyboard) on the screen area. No more trackpad, call, end, BlackBerry, or back buttons.

I find it interesting that RIM changes the name of the OS to BlackBerry 10 last night (this morning in Singapore), they get ripped for it online, and all of a sudden a perfect picture of a new beautiful device gets leaked the next day. Way to deflect negative attention RIM.

Well whatever RIM did to patch up the first DingleBerry exploit was not enough for a second one to be discovered only hours after the new PlayBook OS update. At this rate, we'll be seeing a lot of PlayBook updates in the near future it seems. According to @cmwdotme, RIM's patch did work against it the first time but this second hack uses another exploit entirely. Let the cat and mouse game begin.

BBX Nixed As BlackBerry 10 Becomes Next Official OS Name

DevCon Asia is currently under way in Singapore and right off the bat one of the biggest news is the new name of the next OS generation on BlackBerry will no longer be BBX but instead BlackBerry 10. We reported a couple of days ago how BASIS had filed a temporary restraining order against RIM for the use of the name BBX. It seems Research In Motion just ultimately wanted to avoid any legal issues with BASIS and has made that X become the roman numeral for 10. This will be the biggest jump in OS numerical value for RIM as they will be going from 7.1 to 10.

I personally have no problem with RIM going back to numerical values for their OS brands. It actually reminds me a little bit more about a certain video that we got to see about RIM's outlook on the future (OS 10.x anyone?).

Now who's going to start re-editing all our articles to say "BlackBerry 10" instead?

RIM Patches PlayBook In Response To DingleBerry Jailbreak

It didn't take long for RIM to respond to the recently released PlayBook jailbreak. A new patch has been released that includes support for Flash 10.3, updates to Adobe AIR, and last but not least "security fixes" This may be a new record for patch management by RIM. Keep in mind this patch has only been reported by PlayBook OS 1.0 users, so it seems as though the OS 2.0 developer version has not been patched.

Although it has not been completely confirmed yet that this update renders the DingleBerry exploit useless; I think its pretty safe to say that It's just a matter of time before it does happen. So if you want to keep your self dingle-berried I would stay away from this patch.

BlackBerry OS7 Themes Just Around The Corner

For the past 24 hours, a little birdy has been pointing me in the direction of some deliciously juicy news in the BlackBerry world. That being said, how beautiful would it be if an OS7 theme were to be released soon? Yes you read that right, and yes this is the real deal.

A developer is literally a hop, skip and a jump away from figuring out how to make OS7 themes by using Theme Builder 6. I've been informed that the developer has finally gotten Theme Buider 6 to recognize the Bold 9900 and may have even successfully loaded a 9700 theme to a 9900 and gotten the phone to acknowledge it. Of course that's assuming a few tweaks occurred on the 9700 theme, but that I'm actually uncertain about at this time.

For now though, the writers at BBOS will keep our eyes peeled for a leaked, or even official, release of an OS7 theme. But that doesn't mean you can't send in a few hints and tips to us in the mean time!
