With BlackBerry World 2011 behind us, we have taken a moment to reflect back on some good news that we missed last week. One demo worthy of showing is Poynt's integration of BlackBerry push services to their BB smartphone via PlayBook. With push services being one of the hottest items about BlackBerry, Poynt does a great job at utilizing this feature. In the above video, Peter Werry from Poynt, gives a walk-through of how their app works with push and other innovative uses of BlackBerry services. Poynt is a free app that you can download from their site or BlackBerry App World.

Are you a Poynt user? Leave us feedback on how the app works for you.

RIM to launch 10-inch BlackBerry PlayBook this fall - OS 7 devices delayed?

The guys over at BGR claim to have been told by 'multiple sources' that RIM is planning on releasing the next PlayBook design around this year's holiday season. Rumor has it the next PlayBook design will be a 10 inch model, adding to the already 7 inch model.

Also, via unconfirmed information - the just announced BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930 will not be launching until mid-August at the earliest. The previous timeframe for the launch was during June/July. The launch has been delayed for reasons unknown. Additionally, the rest of RIM’s 2011 lineup won’t be announced until BlackBerry’s DevCon conference on October 18th. Apparently the hierarchy at RIM have been vocally unhappy about the “disproportionate” reallocation of resources to the PlayBook away from the OS 7 lineup.

How about it? Would you buy a 10 inch PlayBook?

While we wait on RIM to approve the native email app aMail from third party developer AiFlex, we have a chance to see one of the most anticipated demos of BlackBerry World 2011. Keynote attendees got a sneak peek of the upcoming Native email and PIM (Personal Information Management) for the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. These PIM applications (including Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, MemoPad and, of course, Email) will come to BlackBerry PlayBook tablets via an update to the BlackBerry Tablet OS later this summer. Andrew Bocking, VP Handheld Software Product Management, gives us a video demo of the Email and Contacts applications. Be sure to take a look and post a comment to let us know what you think!

RIM announced at BlackBerry World that they would be working hard with software developers Rovio to get Angry Birds on the PlayBook. I am seriously excited about this. We already posted about users being able to play the an Angry Birds flash game from their PlayBook's browser, now this is the real deal. No word of the release date, though I'm sure they won't keep us waiting.

The video above is with Ryan Bidan, senior product manager for the PlayBook, who gave Engadget a hands-on demo of BlackBerry Messenger on the PlayBook. It's not a native app - which means you'll need the PlayBook to be paired with a BlackBerry smartphone via BlackBerry Bridge. The BBM update for PlayBook was announced yesterday and is being pushed out to users - along with a Bridge update on the handset side. We imagine a stand alone version of BBM for PlayBook will be available in the future, but for now, this should hold off all of us BBMers out there.

Today at BlackBerry World 2011, Engadget got a hold of a demo of Android apps running natively on the BlackBerry PlayBook. Android's menu and home buttons are emulated using the standard PlayBook gestures, and the back button is replaced with an on-screen softkey. When the Android Player becomes available for the PlayBook, users will be able to download Android apps from BB App World. Also in the news of Android apps, the mobile device hit, Angry Birds, was announced to become available for the PlayBook as a native game - no strings attached!

RIM officially announces Video Chat application for the PlayBook

Another official announcement from RIM... this time it's a Video Chat application for the PlayBook! In all honesty, I think this should have been on the PlayBook from day one-given it's high video recording resolution.

Key features of the PlayBook Video Chat application include:

    • One-Click Video and Voice over Wi-Fi Calls - with just one click users can make a call from their Video Chat contact list, log of recent calls or simply by entering the BBID email address of the person they want to call.
    • Incoming Call Notifications - users will receive a notification pop-up when a new video call comes in, allowing them to accept the call as either a video or voice call, or decline the call. For those quiet moments - such as when while watching a movie or playing a game -users will also have the ability to simply set the "Do Not Disturb" option and the BlackBerry PlayBook will automatically ignore all incoming calls.
    • Powerful In-Call Functions - by using the picture-in-picture function users can easily preview their own video image prior to placing the call in order to see what will be displayed on the other end. They can also easily switch cameras from front to rear so their friends can see what they are seeing, and for private moments users can mute/unmute audio or make or take calls using voice only.
    • Friends List - BlackBerry PlayBook Video Chat comes complete with a Friends List for maintaining your favorite contacts. A picture can easily be added to a contact to personalize the entry and a Call Log makes it simple to keep track of received and missed calls.

The down side (well sort of) - you'll have to wait till tomorrow to download. I know it's hard to wait for it, but it will most certainly be worth it!

Finally!! BBM on the PlayBook! Too bad I don't have one (yet), but I just had to share this with you. You need to have the BlackBerry Bridge app v1.0.0.83 and BBM from the Beta Zone, and you'll be up and running! If no update is displayed, you can download Bridge v1.0.0.83 here, and the newest PlayBook version of BBM is available in the Beta Zone (apply here).
