The BlackBerry PlayBook seems to be conquering every area within enterprise computing. Today RIM has introduced the availability of the Citrix receiver for the BlackBerry PlayBook.

The Citrix reliever allows users to access applications and desktops hosted by their company's Citrix server. Now applications like Microsoft Outlook, and Microsoft Word will be able to run directly from the PlayBook. If available, users can also access their Citrix desktop with a couple of simple touches. You could look at the Citrix receiver as an extension of your desktop at work.

    Some Key features include:

    • Multitasking – similar to the PlayBook’s multi-tab browsing experience, the Citrix Receiver allows for multitasking between virtualized apps and desktops, and between multiple desktops themselves – all on the tablet’s seven-inch screen
    • Single “Sign On” Access – one single sign on access point provides full access to virtual apps and desktops
    • IT Controlled Built-in Enterprise App Hosting – IT managers can give self-service access to enterprise apps, much like you select apps from BlackBerry App World
    • Security – the unique FIPS-certified BlackBerry PlayBook tablet security protocols protect your data when using the Citrix Receiver
    • Peripheral Integration in High Definition – by pairing a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, you’ll gain full access to your remote desktop and apps on the PlayBook’s brilliant HD screen

This is a really big step in a positive direction for RIM's PlayBook as it now opens the doors to communicate with one of the most effective application hosting systems in the market today.

Watch my quick preview of how Dead Space by EA Games runs on the BlackBerry PlayBook. I can say that this game runs very smooth, no lag, graphics are awesome, and audio is great. This game on the PlayBook is equal to the play experience on the iPad if not better because of the size of the screen, controls, and better audio. You can purchase Dead Space in BlackBerry App World for $9.99.

RIM Responds to Early Release of PlayBook's Android App Player

Earlier today we posted about the leaked Android App Player that was found in a Desktop Manager update changelog. RIM has come out quickly in response to explain the leak, and why you shouldn't install it on your tablet:

“An older version of the Android App Player beta software for the BlackBerry PlayBook was inadvertently posted and has since been removed. We recommend that users refrain from downloading and installing this software since it is outdated and non-functional in many respects. The official beta release of the Android App Player for the BlackBerry PlayBook is on track for release later this summer.”
If you have been having issues with the App Player, this explains it. I'm guessing that the official Android Player is tracking around version 2 of the QNX OS with the update being a late summer release.

BlackBerry PlayBook Becomes First Tablet Certified for U.S. Government

RIM announced today that it has received FIPS 140-2 certification for the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet, making the PlayBook the first tablet certified for deployment within U.S. federal government agencies. No other tablet on the market has gained FIPS (Federal Information Processing Standard) certification from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), which is required under the Federal Information Security Management Act of 2002 (FISMA).

“RIM is pleased to announce that the BlackBerry PlayBook is the first tablet approved under FIPS for use within the U.S. federal government,” said Scott Totzke, Senior Vice President, BlackBerry Security at Research In Motion. “This certification demonstrates our continued commitment to meeting the needs of security-conscious organizations and enables the U.S. federal government to buy with confidence knowing that the PlayBook meets their computing policy requirements for protecting sensitive information.”
While the PlayBook is the first certified tablet, government workers can still use other devices. Will this sway Government workers to set aside their iPads for a more secure PlayBook tablet?

RIM Pulls the Plug on Latest BlackBerry PlayBook OS

After just making the latest PlayBook OS available last night/into this morning, RIM has pulled it because of issue connecting to the BlackBerry Bridge. Issues have been reported for pretty much everyone that along with upgrading the PlayBook OS have upgrade their Bridge app on their BlackBerry. For those of us that hadn't been prompted to upgrade BlackBerry Bridge, this latest update is working fine and has had no issues. So the simple workaround for the time being is to downgrade BlackBerry Bridge to 1.0.0.93 until the next PlayBook update is released "sometime this week".

We're working on getting some OTA's available for it so stay tuned but if you find one beforehand give it a try and let us know if it fixed the issue in the forums.

UPDATE: Download links have been added. Head the forum to download.
