Today the web domain for the DingleBerry PlayBook Jailbreak Project becomes officially known as dingleberry.it. Not much on the site so far besides a link to the Twitter account ran by Chris Wade, AKA @cmwdotme, who seems to be the go to man for the jailbreak project. In case you missed it, we have reported so far the DingleBerry jailbreak rooting the PlayBook, allowing access to Hulu via web browser, and RIM's official statement regarding the jailbreak. Keep it here on BBOS for some more exclusive DingleBerry content coming your way.

A few days ago reports came out that the PlayBook was rooted. Code named "dingleberry", the jailbreak allows the user full access to the PlayBooks QNX based operating system. We knew it would only be a matter of time before we heard a response from RIM regarding the issue. The following is an email response we got from RIM regarding the jailbreak:

“Research In Motion (RIM) is aware of a claim made on Twitter by security researchers working together that suggests the ability to “jailbreak” a BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. The term “jailbreaking” is commonly used to describe altering the software on a smartphone or tablet in order to obtain access to systems or applications not officially authorized or distributed by the manufacturer. BlackBerry smartphone users are not affected.RIM is currently investigating this claim and has been in contact with one of the security researchers to discuss it.

RIM is currently not aware of a jailbreak being leveraged by anyone other than the researchers, who claim to have performed a jailbreak on their own BlackBerry PlayBook tablets only. If it is determined that the claim is accurate, RIM will follow its standard response process to develop and release a software update that is designed to minimize adverse impact to our customers or carrier partners. RIM is aware that the security researchers have stated they intend to release a tool to jailbreak the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. If such a tool is released, RIM will investigate it.

The security of mobile devices and major networked systems is tested by third-party security researchers every day. RIM also continually tests the security of its own products, and volunteers its products to recognized industry experts for security testing and certification to help identify possible issues. RIM is committed to the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet and to working with researchers to continue to protect our customers.
Now its just a matter of time before the cat and mouse games that Apple plays with it's jaibreaker's make their way to the world of BlackBerry.

For some time now PlayBook owners have been starving for some video streaming access albeit via web or app. Two of the main movie streaming sites, Hulu and Netflix, have denied access to PlayBook owners since it's launch earlier this year. As you can see from the image above, "device not supported" is the current message you will get if you try and access Hulu's webpage... until now. Watch as one of the DingleBerry creators, Chris Wade, AKA @cmwdotme, take you through a video demo of him accessing Hulu videos on the PlayBook. How soon will we be able to do the same? According to Chris, not to far, as he mentions in the video the DingleBerry release is just a week away! Let's hope this does the same for Netflix.

If you're lucky enough to have someone working at RIM that owes you a favor or two, now is your chance to cash in on that if you know what's good for you. BlackBerry PlayBook prices have officially seen the lowest prices imaginable. It's practically stealing at this point. Here's the details for making good on this deal of a lifetime:
    • Employees can acquire up to five (5) PlayBooks per person
    • The 16GB PlayBook is priced at a whopping $99
    • The 32GB PlayBook plus an HDMI cable is set at $149
    • (And the best deal) The 64GB PlayBook, an HDMI cable, and a convertible case at the mind-blowing price of only $199.
Now if you've been under a rock the last few weeks and don't know what's good in the BlackBerry world, the 16GB PlayBook has only recently been dropped to $199. Now the 64GB plus two much-needed accessories can be bought for that same price. I have yet to be able to get over this and I would highly recommend partaking in this extravaganza that is a BlackBerry Playbook deal.

Rooting is a common practice among many Android users and even more popular in the world of Apple. Essentially rooting a device gives a user full control over the OS provided. Most people are familiar with jailbreaking as it gained its popularity among Apple users to install third party apps; another advantage of rooting your device. Jailbreaking/rooting takes advantage of security exploits found in the devices OS. These exploits or holes if you will, allow access to the most trusted part of a UNIX based system root user, in Microsoft Windows you could think of it as the Administrator account.

The Black Friday deals may have been too good for Best Buy. Earlier in the week Best Buy like many other stores reported that they would be selling the 16 GB BlackBerry PlayBook at $199.99, that's about $300 in saving. I like many others were excited to take advantage of killer prices, practically giving the PlayBook away.

The excitement quickly turned into frustration as many people have been having their order cancelled with little or no explanation. Statements like the device being out of stock or your payment was unable to be processed were among the number of explanations that users have been receiving from Best Buy. I was able to get a Best Buy representative on the phone and they stated that corporate had "cancelled all BlackBerry PlayBook orders". Forum posts regarding the issue have been quickly popping up over at the official Best Buy Forums. Clearly somethings going on. Whats going on with Best Buy? Do they have the device or not? If you are experiencing something like this from Best Buy please let us know in the forums.

A few weeks ago we gave you a report with details from the BlackBerry Innovation Forum 2011 in Washington, DC. Unfortunately we were not able to snag any pictures from the event that showcased some of the new features of the upcoming PlayBook OS 2.0. However the folks over at blackberrycool were able to capture a few shots of the native email contacts and calendar. This confirms what we already reported and promises a huge change in the way we will be able to utilize the PlayBook.
