A survey of 1,000 Canadians was completed by Toronto-based, Solutions Research Group (SRG) showing tablet ownership of the Blackberry PlayBook market share has risen from about 5 per cent of the total tablet market last fall, from 10% to 15%, a major jump that coincides with the company’s decision to slash its price by hundreds of dollars due to widespread discounting by Research In Motion Ltd.

Even though the iPad held the top spot with a 68% market share - though down from 86% before.

As it stands, the BlackBerry Playbook with all the sales and the promise of OS2 coming soon, even though the PlayBook was being sold at a loss, renewed sales of the device may be keeping consumers within the RIM fold.

With all the negativity of RIM, and the often-criticized BlackBerry PlayBook, this is definitely a very good sign that the PlayBook is going in the right direction, and now with a new PlayBook 3G and the much-anticipated OS2.0 software update on the horizon, this couldn't come at a better time.

The suspense is killing us but we still have to wait. OS 2.0 for the PlayBook is coming and this Best Buy Canada flyer only adds fuel to the fire. According to Mobile Syrup, this ad will be running this Friday, the 17th so it's logical the update will be coming soon after. Our sources at RIM and Best Buy are still pointing to the 21st as the release date as we originally reported back in January. Apparently the rumored release date of the 17th was going to be accurate but the BlackBerry Bridge 2.0 would not have launched until days after, RIM wanted to avoid this as much as possible. They trying to get the BlackBerry Bridge 2.0 and it's Remote Control and Open On functions ready for the Tuesday launch.

I can't help but wonder though, why BlackBerry has put out an official date out there? What's stopping them for doing so? Although that does worry a bit, I can't help but think this update will come out on time and won't get pushed back. Just let us know RIM. It wouldn't hurt.

Either way the date that we had already mentioned has been confirmed as the 21st of this month. Everyone is very eagerly waiting on this OS release, and it looks as though we are right on track for our target date.

The PlayBook OS 2.0 promises us some very exciting things like native email, calendar and contacts. So it's no surprise why everyone is excited about this release. Until then, we wait.

BlackBerry announced at the beginning of this month an offer for developers of Android and BlackBerry platforms to get more apps into App World for OS 2.0's launch this week. There has been such huge interest in submitting from developers, that BlackBerry has announced they will extending their original offer to developers to March 2nd, 2012.

How much interest has there been? According to BlackBerry's official DevBlog:
There have been over 1,500 app submissions as of last Friday and over 6600 new developers registered in the BlackBerry App World™ storefront. We have teams working around the clock to approve vendor registrations and app submissions. Because of the high demand, approvals are taking longer than normal – we appreciate your patience.
Vendors do have to be registered by the 15th of February though in order to take advantage of this offer. So if you're a developer that was thinking about submitting an app not totally complete in order to make the deadline, you know have a couple of more weeks to get that app polished and ready to go.

One of the things I personally think the PlayBook has been lacking is accessories. Yes, there are rapid charging stands and some cool covers/cases for it, but we're still waiting for a couple of cool accessories to make their way to our tablets; one of them being a docking station. Apparently PlayBook won't have to be waiting forever to get their hands on one. The guys at BlackBerryCzech have gotten some pretty cool pictures of what they say is RIM's upcoming OEM PlayBook docking station. Some of the reported features include:
    • Up to 3 USB ports
    • RJ-45 input (Ethernet input)
    • HDMI input
    • Wireless Receiver which can be used to make and receive calls

Over the next week or so, we will most likely be seeing a lot, if not all, of our apps on the PlayBook update with the new OS 2.0 coming out next Friday, the 17th. Slacker Radio has now joined the party and has released a small upgrade to their popular app. No change log was available for this update.

Even before the highly anticipated release of the BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0, there are already talks of OS 3.0. Yes, it may be a bit premature to talk about OS 3.0 as 2.0 has not even been embraced by the public yet or even fine-tuned with patches. However, that's not stopping the rumor mill.

According to sources over at n4bb RIM is already actively developing OS 3.0 for the PlayBook. Could this really be true? Before dismissing this as nonsense, it may have some merit. PlayBook OS 2.0 is done and its set to be released sometime within the next few weeks. So where does that leave the PlayBook OS? It may be possible that we only see a few updates on OS 2.0 and RIM releases OS 3.0 to adapt to BlackBerry 10 devices. Could this be something for the PlayBook 3G models?

As with any news like this all one can do is ponder at what might be. We will have to see how this one plays out.

The masses are extremely excited about OS 2.0 for the PlayBook being released this month. Many feel it completes a solid product that was originally launched half-baked and incomplete. For this reason, the PlayBook and RIM have taken some major hits across tech blogs worldwide. It simply feels like this approach was not thought out and that Research In Motion should've waited to get all native PIM functions (calendar, email; etc) working on the PlayBook before releasing it to the public. Not doing so was a mistake that hurt how the PlayBook has been perceived... Or was it?

In the short term the answer is obvious, yes it hurt. In the long term though I'm thinking the fact that they got the PlayBook out, incomplete or whatnot, to the public will actually benefit us as end users. Why?

Well let's think, if they would've decided to hold off on releasing the PlayBook incomplete and decided to get all these wonderful things we're expecting OS 2.0 to have on there, how long would it have taken them to release the PlayBook and what would it be like?

The popular jailbreaking application Dingleberry has been updated to version 3.3.2. Not too many changes here, but there is enough to take note of. As with any other application it is important that you make sure that you are up to date, as there are always bug fixes and enhancements that are being pushed out.

The following is the latest change log:
    • Fixed an issue with IP addresses
    • Scripts are now monitored better (termination and echo output).
    • Fixed a timing bug that affected some users (from DB 3.0 to 3.3.1) with bad USB latency.
    • New Script: Toggle USB Host Mode
Warning: BBOS is not responsible for you damaging your device. Please root your device with caution.

You can download the latest build here:

Once again a new emulator has been ported to the BlackBerry PlayBook. This one is called Snes9x, and thanks to project leader A7omic and jtokarchuk we can now play Super Nintendo games on the PlayBook. The nice thing about this emulator is that it runs on PlayBook OS version 1.0 and does not require any fancy hacking. All that is needed is that you side-load it using your favorite side-loading application.

[UPDATE 2/3/2012 4:00PM] Apparently the BlackBerry community's response to this original offer was huge. So huge in fact that RIM is now extending this offer to "any app – WebWorks, Native, AIR, and Android. Same deadline of February 13 applies."

    ------------------------------------------------------

There is huge buzz surrounding the release of OS 2.0 for the BlackBerry PlayBook. With the possible release date a little over two weeks away, RIM is doing everything it can to get as many Android apps as possible ready for the new OS launch. Today, the Inside BlackBerry Blog posted a new promotion for Android app developers:

The plan is to provide one free 16GB BlackBerry PlayBook to every registered BlackBerry App World vendor who converts their Android app for use on the BlackBerry PlayBook and submits it to BlackBerry App World between February 2, 2012 and February 13, 2012.
More details about the promotion will be posted on the Inside BlackBerry Blog as soon as possible but for now that stands to be a pretty awesome promotion for Android app developers. We're hopeful this creates a nice wave of developers that if, for no other reason, will port their apps over to App World to get a free tablet.

This is a pretty smart idea on RIM's part. With the recent low prices of the PlayBook, odds are most people are opting to go for a higher capacity tablet (32GB and 64GB), leaving RIM with a lot of 16GB tablets lying around. Giving these away in exchange for something, like Android apps in App World, will only help the momentum of the OS 2.0 launch. Smart move RIM, smart move indeed.

UPDATE [11:58am]: It seems that our brothers from the north are also getting ready for the PlayBook OS 2.0 update on the 21st. Various Best Buy Canada and Future Shop locations have confirmed the February 21st launch date as well.

    -------------------------------------------------------------

Until dates for any type of product launch and/or software update are announced officially, they tend to usually be "target dates" instead of being set in stone. It seems this will also be the case with the PlayBook OS 2.0 release date. Representatives at multiple Best Buy locations across the U.S. and Canada are receiving word that the PlayBook OS 2.0 upgrade will be made available to the public on Tuesday, February 21st.

Originally, we had heard the date of Friday, February 17th as the possible launch date but instead it seems like this date may end up being an internal target date to get everything in place (servers ready and loaded; etc) for the launch on the 21st.

RIM obviously does not want anything to go wrong with this update as it is one of the most anticipated software updates in BlackBerry history. This is why they could be opting to go with the safe bet of launching OS 2.O on a Tuesday instead of a Friday in case anything does go wrong. Whatever the date may end up being, Research In Motion will be on time with a major software update release. Great way to start off 2012.

The BlackBerry PlayBook 3G tablet has been rumored for quite some time now, and we were beginning to wonder is it was even going to happen. A new slide taken from what appears to be an internal RIM document gives us some nice information regarding the PlayBook 3G+ model.

If you notice the OS section of the description has not been defined. However, it is probably safe to assume that it will ship with a slightly modified version of OS 2.0 to help manage the 3G connections. Interestingly HSPA+ is also deemed by some carriers as 4G, so it will be interesting to see how that fits in.

The release date for this device is uncertain as the leaked roadmap appears to show the device being release the Q1 of 2013. Others say we could see some time in the latter part of this year. As for pricing that is anyone's guess but a good estimate would be anywhere between $300 and $400.

A quick summary of the specifications are as follows:
    • 7 inch LCD screen with 1024x600 WSVGA resolution
    • 1.5 Ghz dual core processor
    • 1GB RAM
    • 32GB flash memory
    • Records in full 1080p HD Video; H.264, MPEG4, WMV, HDMI output
    • 3.0MP front facing camera and 5.0 back facing camera
    • 802.11 a/b/g/n
    • Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR
There is not much of a difference between this one and the one that we currently have now, but it's still early yet and we may see some other changes.
