Security researchers at this years Infiltrate security conference have discovered a new vulnerability that has potential to allow malicious applications to access personal information. Zach Lanier & Ben Nell both of the Intrepidous Group are responsible for finding the vulnerability.

This particular vulnerability relates to the PlayBooks native applications. When a native application for the PlayBook is created the developer has access to a unique file called the .ALL file. This file on the QNK based system allows them access to shared data or files. In short, there is a flaw which allows native developers access to files they should not have access to.

The .ALL file when used security researchers allowed them to access a PlayBook owners bookmarks, Wi-Fi access points, BBM username and info, desktop manager token, and the BlackBerry Bridge token. This token is pretty much the key that connects the BlackBerry device to the PlayBook. The Bluetooth connection between the PlayBook and phone is secure, but the problem is that this token can be used by a native developer to query the bridge for data they should not have access to.

RIM has spoken out about this vulnerability in the following official statement:

    Media Statement: Infiltrate conference
“The BlackBerry PlayBook issue described at the Infiltrate security conference has been resolved with BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0, which is scheduled to be available as a free download to customers in February 2012. There are no known exploits and risk is mitigated by the fact that a user would need to install and run a malicious application after initiating a BlackBerry Bridge connection with their BlackBerry smartphone.”
So there you have it. It looks as though RIM will not be fixing this, as they state that OS 2.0 has resolved the issue. It seems as though the PlayBook and its QNX based OS is getting its fair share of security testing.

Retro gaming has always been a favorite thing for me to do on my spare time. There is nothing like breaking out the old Nintendo Entertainment System and playing a few classic levels of Super Mario Bros. Yes, you could always blow the dust off that old NES or SNES system, and spend a bit of time trying to get the game to work or you could use an emulator. Emulators have been around for quite a while, and exist on almost every platform. Perhaps one of the most popular NES emulators FCEUX, has been around since 2008, and is one of the most solid NES emulators out there.

CES 2012 is in full effect in Las Vegas and BlackBerry is making their presence felt. With the big announcements yesterday of BlackBerry 7.1, and BBM 6.1; the preview of the BlackBerry PlayBook Tablet OS 2.0 was the next thing on the agenda for BlackBerry. Today Inside BlackBerry has posted a new video highlighting these great features.

The messages app has a great look and seems pretty easy to use. It brings something new and fresh while at the same time having the BlackBerry email reliability that we're all use to. The fact that it's integrated with social media just makes it that much cooler. Same can be said for the calendar and contacts apps as well. The tight integration between apps is something we've seen more and more in our BlackBerry smartphones but that has been missing from our PlayBooks. This is apparently being addressed in 2.0.

I've been called a BlackBerry fanboy because I get excited about the smallest little new features that others may not think are so great, but honestly this is pretty awesome. Yes, these are features that should've been implemented on the PlayBook since the beginning but can we please let that go and focus on what is here now?

Now it's RIM's time to make sure this OS gets polished and shipped out in time to inject a little credibility in the time frame they've put out for their future devices and products. Keep the momentum going RIM.

Monday mornings tend to be lazy for most of us, but RIM decided to change that today!

After surprising us this morning with the official release of BlackBerry OS 7.1 (including BBM 6.1 coming out of beta), we've received confirmation that CES 2012 attendees who visit the BlackBerry booth (South Hall 3 Booth # 30326) will get the opportunity to preview the upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 functionality, including:

    • New unified inbox - a powerful unified inbox within the built-in messaging app allows users to quickly manage their personal email and work email accounts as well as the messaging capabilities of popular social networking sites like Twitter®, LinkedIn® and others - all in one place.
    • Inbox management tools - allows for powerful inbox search across multiple email accounts, as well as the ability to set out-of-office messages and email signatures directly from their tablet.
    • Relationship-centric contacts app - more than just an address book, the new built-in Contacts app serves as a social hub - merging and consolidating information from multiple sources (including email and social channels) into one contact file for each person in their address book. Each contact file includes information such as recent status updates, conversations, related news articles and mutual contacts that are kept up-to-date automatically.
    • Remote control for the BlackBerry PlayBook - new BlackBerry® Bridge™ features allow a user's BlackBerry® smartphone to act as a keyboard and mouse for their BlackBerry PlayBook - effectively providing a wireless remote control for their tablet. Perfect for pausing a movie when a BlackBerry PlayBook is plugged in to a TV with an HDMI connection, or for using the tactile QWERTY keyboard on a BlackBerry smartphone to compose a message or document on the BlackBerry PlayBook.
    • Print To Go application - this app allows users to wirelessly "print" from their laptop or PC directly to their BlackBerry PlayBook over Wi-Fi®. A digital printout is created on the BlackBerry PlayBook so that users can view, sort and manage their digital printouts as though they were physical sheets of paper. The Print To Go app is the perfect way to consolidate info from various related sources like a hotel web confirmation, an airline boarding pass email, the show event schedule or even a map of the destination city and make them available for quick access on the go.
    • Video store (available in the United States @ launch) - a catalog of thousands of movies and TV shows will be available through the integrated BlackBerry Video Storefront* with new releases to be made available for purchase or rent the same day they come out on DVD. Users will be able to begin watching media as soon as they start to download the file, so users won't have to wait for the entire file to transfer before they can enjoy great entertainment on the tablet's high resolution display, or on an HDTV via the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet's HDMI output.
    • Enhanced web browsing - the BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 browser also includes a new reading view, which is designed to make web sites even easier to enjoy by eliminating page clutter at the touch of a button. What's left is a cleaner format that is great for reading online news articles, blog posts, or websites that contain heavy amounts of text.
Tons of awesome features, right? We've only highlighted a few of the features above, but you can see the extensive full list in our forums.

They've also confirmed that PlayBook OS 2.0 software update will be available for all BlackBerry PlayBook users in February 2012.

If you didn't feel excited about OS 2.0 for PlayBook before, I don't see any reason now that you won't be jumping on the opportunity to purchase one of these tablets prior to the new OS launching.

The long awaited PlayBook OS 2.0 is set to have a guest appearance at this months Consumer Electronics Show (CES) RIM has been sending out invitations to an "intimate event" that will allow attendees to experience the BlackBerry PlayBook's new OS 2.0. This also suggest RIM is not going to have a very strong presence at the years biggest electronic show.

Back in October we heard that PlayBook's OS 2 would be delayed until February. Does this mean that we could see an early release? Over the past few months we have seen glimpses of OS 2.0 and have been really impressed. I was able to get hands on at the BIF 2011, and I can confirm it is everything that has been missing from OS 1.0 and much more. The release of this OS is a make or break for the PlayBook device so I am looking forward to updating to OS 2.0.

There are reports that the BlackBerry PlayBook has sold out in India. Two retailers in India (Ingram and Redington) said they have sold 12,000 PlayBooks in just four days. RIM’s India Managing Director Sunil Dutt says that “BlackBerry continues to be an inspirational brand and we have seen a huge uptake across the country for the PlayBook during the offer period.”

Prices were slashed by more that 50% across the globe which spurred the increased sales of the tablet. If you are looking to get your hands on a PlayBook now is the time. Eat your heart out iPad!

I've looked high & low for a FourSquare app for the BlackBerry PlayBook, but apparently I wasn't looking in the right places. While looking recently in "Recently Updated" apps on App World, I noticed FourPlay.

    FourPlay For PlayBerry PlayBook
is exactly what you'd expect from a FourSquare app on your tablet. This 3rd party Foursquare app brings all the features you'll find on your official FourSquare app found on your BlackBerry Smartphone. I was amazed at the fact that my location was more accurate within this app than it is when I use my Bold 9900.

With many tweaks/updates rumored to be coming to a future build planned to be released around the same time as PlayBook OS 2.0, & with no plans official 4Sq app on the horizon, this application is a must have for anyone who checks-in often.
