While Alec Saunders isn't making up parody songs for BlackBerry 10, he loves to do some myth busting on app development for BlackBerry. One of these myths is that there aren't hardly any apps for BlackBerry. This is just not true. Via the BlackBerryDev Blog, Victoria Berry shares with us a few major stats regarding apps, including a major 3 billions apps downloaded milestone!

Three billion app downloads averages out to over 2.5 million downloads each day. What’s even more important – and impressive – is that the number of daily downloads continues to increase. It took 786 days to reach the one billion mark, 210 days to reach two billion, and only 176 days to reach the three billion number. I should also note that this number does not include apps downloaded from third party BlackBerry app stores, or those pushed internally at companies around the world, or those downloaded directly from the web.
Special thanks is due to the over 28,000 BlackBerry App World vendors and the BlackBerry App World storefront team. BlackBerry App World has continued to grow steadily with more than 90,000 applications now up for sale (we know other platforms use other metrics like submitted, or approved, but we prefer the more tangible “up for sale”).
Congrats to BlackBerry for this great milestone! Let us know what your favorite BlackBerry apps are in the comments.

On the tail of a column written by The Globe and Mail on Tuesday about the latest news surrounding RIM, G&M asked their readers what they thought were the most important questions to ask CEO, Thorsten Heins. G&M picked through the hundreds of questions sent in, and then compiled the top 10 list to submit to Thorsten. Iain Marlow, a writer for G&M has tweeted today that CEO Heins plans to answer each and every one of these 10 questions.

While advertising is a crucial part of sustaining many sites, it can only go so far before it starts to affect that site's user-base. Today, Yahoo! and Facebook have made peace in court, all patent suits have been dropped, but only with a new agreement - to bring you more ads! Yep, as if you haven't had enough. Let's just hope that the next move isn't mandatory ads on 3rd party Facebook or Yahoo! apps, or we may be seeing the native Facebook for BlackBerry app littered with em'. As announced on Tuesday, Research in Motion will be holding their Annual General Meeting of Shareholder's to conduct their Board of Directors re-elections. For those unfamiliar with the process, every year, the board will present to shareholders their plan for the next fiscal year and shareholders will have the right to elect or withhold votes to elect the Board of Directors of the company. This year, the Board has recommended Timothy Dattels who is currently a Senior Partner of TPG Capital, LP. to join RIM's Board of Directors replacing the seat vacant by former co-CEO Jim Ballsille who resigned from the board in March of this year. Along with the recommendation of adding Timothy Dattels, reelection will be required for the rest of the board including CEO Thorsten Heins, Chair of the Board Barbara Stymiest, Vice-Chair and Former co-CEO Mike Lazaridis, Independent Directors David Kerr, Claudia Kotchka, Roger Martin, John E. Richardson, Prem Watsa, and John Wetmore.

In light of this week's many PR appearances that Thorsten has been using to spread light on RIM's current business situation, it is expected that many tough questions will be direct at the board and the current direction of this company. BlackBerryOS.com will be attending this event and I will be tweeting from the @BlackBerryOS account so if you havent done so already, follow us on twitter and we will keep you informed on what happens during this event.

The following article is written by our Filipino team member, ToraxCefiro:

The race is on once again to our fellow Filipino BlackBerry Developers as PinoyBBDev is going to have their 2nd PinoyBBDev Hackathon this coming August 4-5 2012. This is a two-day coding session that will turn your app ideas into reality and possibly hitting the BlackBerry AppWorld. This event aims not only to establish awareness about different technologies in creating applications for BlackBerry, but also to showcase the Filipino talent locally and across the globe.

This year's hackathon will focus more on the technologies supported by the upcoming operating system for BlackBerry PlayBook and BlackBerry 10 such as:

We have already seen quite a few pictures of RIM's upcoming 4G/3G PlayBook. The latest wave of leaked pictures gives us a better idea of how the 4G/3G components will integrate with the PlayBooks OS. Reports are also coming in that the new 4G/3G models will have NFC support, and that users will be able to utilize BlackBerry protect. This is great news, BlackBerry protect is a feature that all users should be familiar with.

In addition, we will most likely see a modified version of PlayBook OS 2.0 to address the needs of 4G/3G radios as well as any other new components RIM decides to release with it. The PlayBook 4G/3G models are expected to be out sometime later this year.

Take a look at the latest pictures and let us know your thoughts. Are you planning on purchasing a 4G/3G capable PlayBook or will you wait for a 10" version that could have mobile network options?

One of my favorite parts of App World is the New Arrivals section. This is where I found this new app this evening and decided to give it a try.

Facade is a cool app that allows you to combine your Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and even Sina Weibo (Don't worry, I had to look this one up too) accounts into one easy to read timeline. You can post to all your accounts at once or select each account individually instead.

This is an Android app that's been ported over to the PlayBook, but it has worked extremely well for me so far.

It can be a little confusing in terms of the different timelines when you first start. Once you sign into all your accounts, the feeds just don't show up until you go into the settings (swipe down from the top bezel) and adjust how frequently you want to be updated. After that, hitting the "reload" button at the button will show the combined timelines in the app.

The cool thing is, once that's done, you can pretty much just refresh the timeline whenever you see fit or wait till it updates automatically based on your predetermined intervals.

One more thing, Facade for the PlayBook is free. What do I like more than cool apps? Cool apps that are free and this one definitely fits in this category.

BlackBerry news in the last week has had it's plenty of downs. However, with this less than par news we have gained plenty of new insight into the BlackBerry 10 platform and what it entails. The news has taken us on a roller coaster. From everything about the delay of BlackBerry 10 to Q1 of 2013, to leaked slides showing that there will be both QWERTY and FullScreen BlackBerry 10 devices (L and N Series) at launch.

With the help from an anonymous source, we have gotten our hands on what appears to be a BlackBerry 10 Roadmap for 2013! Boo-ya!! I'll explain more below, but first, here is a quick overview of the roadmap dates:

    • 4G PlayBook - Q4, 2012
    • BlackBerry 10 London/Nevada - Q1, 2013 - Europe launch before N. America
    • BlackBerry 10 Upgrade for PlayBook - Q1/Q2, 2013
    • BlackBerry device codenamed "Nashville" - Q2/Q3, 2013
    • BlackBerry 10 inch PlayBook "Blackforest" - Q3, 2013
    • BlackBerry device codenamed "Naples" - Q3/Q4, 2013

Before we go into what the roadmap is showing us, we were also told that RIM will be launching BlackBerry 10 in Europe 3-4 weeks prior to launching BlackBerry 10 in North America. Don't worry though, both launches will still take place in Q1. The BlackBerry 10 Europe launch is suppose to take place within the first week of January, while the North American launch to follow in the first week of February. The reason behind this, is because the European markets and media outlets have been better receptive to BlackBerry than the "doom and gloom" repetitive bullshit of the North American media outlets. RIM has also had much better success with BlackBerry in general in these other markets. This should give the global market more time to become accustomed to BlackBerry 10 and create the hype it needs to make it's way to the shelves of N. America and elsewhere.

Little has been known in regards to the BlackBerry 10 roadmap besides what we have learned from the delayed launch in the last week during RIM's earnings call. What we have known already is that the 4G LTE PlayBook will be on the market before the year's end. This will usher in the first BlackBerry 10 devices in Q1 of 2013, and PlayBook's running OS 2 will get a upgrade to BlackBerry 10 OS. Probably the best news about being a PlayBook owner you can get.

What really sparks our interest is what we have heard about possible other BB10 devices which names were discovered hidden in the data of the BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha device. These were codenamed "Nashville" and "Naples." The roadmap tells us that the Nashville is tracking between Q2/Q3, and Naples Q3/Q4. As to what these devices are, we are still uncertain, but there has been speculation that they may be variations of the QWERTY N-Series. It would make sense being they all have a codename that starts with the letter N. Or, they could very well be variants of a 7 or 10 inch PlayBook tablet - not enough info yet.

Since the release of the 7 inch PlayBook there has been many speculations and rumors as to when, or if, there will be a 10 inch PlayBook to ever see the market. As far as over a year ago there were rumors that RIM had completely stopped any kind of plans for a 10 inch PlayBook so that they could focus on getting BlackBerry 10 OS out first. This makes sense that we would not see a 10 inch PlayBook hit your happy little hands until BlackBerry 10 is launched. This also means that any tablet launching after Q1 will also come equipped with the BlackBerry 10 OS.

We've known that the device codenamed "Blackforest" has long now been rumored to be the 10 inch BlackBerry tablet. Based on the roadmap, it looks to be tracking for Q3, 2013. There is also the number "128" shown besides the "Blackforest" codename. Could this mean that the first 10 inch PlayBook will come in a 128 GB model!? This could be very well so, as RIM has just nixed the 16 GB model, citing that less of memory is just not going to be relevant anymore as they continue their focus on higher capacity models. As apps and OS content continues to become more jam packed rich, I think seeing a 128 GB tablet hit the market in Q3 of 2013 makes a whole lot of sense!

It looks like 2013 is going to be RIM's year for a chance as the comeback kid. I'm hoping to see when we attend the main BlackBerry Jam event this September in San Jose, that more light will be shed on BlackBerry 10 and the many questions coming from the community. I'm still hoping that in some ways this roadmap isn't true, and RIM will surprise us with a early BlackBerry 10 release in Q4 of this year. Either way, keep it here for any updates to the upcoming BlackBerry 10 launch!

On the heels of the RIM's Q1-2013 Earnings Call, Alec Saunders, RIM's VP of Developer Relations, has come out with a reaffirmation and apology to the developer community for the further delay of the BlackBerry 10 OS launch. I'm for one am happy to see that Alec has come out strong and quickly to remind those of us whom are looking toward BlackBerry 10, of the commitment RIM has given to developers so far. Everything from the new BB10Jam events, to the Dev Alpha program. RIM has lived up to their quality of providing devs with the tools and support they need. Reading Alec's statement really makes the delay seem that much shorter knowing that he is behind the wheel on the way to BlackBerry 10. Continue reading to see his letter, and be sure let us know what you think in the comments!

RIM's earnings call a couple days ago was not what we wanted to hear, but instead everything we needed to hear. Now that we have had time to cool down and think with clarity we can see that the message from Thorsten Heins was clear: RIM "will not deliver a product to the market that is not ready to meet the needs of our customers." In order to deliver on that promise, Heins will ensure that there is "no compromise in this issue." In other words, Heins will not deliver a product with missing features like native e-mail or half-hearted attempts at greatness. So it's only a matter of time before all the pieces begin falling into place. Let's try to gain some perspective by looking back at the flood of information that we learned.
