It has been a strange couple of days for RIM, as they have been stuck in the middle of controversy once again. This time being blamed for a flash mob outside an Apple store in Sydney Australia. It was rather interesting how this one played out. Initially it was Samsung who was said to be behind the strange "Wake Up" campaign. However, Samsung publicly denied it stating that " Samsung Electronics Australia has nothing to do with the 'Wake-Up Campaign".

So who could it be? BBOS member DownForce pointed out in a forum post that RIM was now being blamed for the "Wake Up" protest, and pointed to and article that showed why. Some digging around by an associate at Macworld Australia showed that the websites sources code pointed to RIM's AU website. Sounds, like RIM got caught with their pants down on this one.

Furthermore, RIM has since issued a statement saying they were indeed behind the Australian "Wake Up" campaign. Richelle Gillett, the Account Director from Spectrum Communications for BlackBerry has issued the following statement:

“We can confirm that the Australian ‘Wake Up’ campaign, which involves a series of experiential activities taking place across Sydney and Melbourne, was created by RIM Australia. A reveal will take place on May 7th that will aim to provoke conversation on what ‘being in business’ means to Australians.

Strange, embarrassing, awkward may all be appropriate words to describe RIM's latest advertising campaign, but it does lead us to another question. What is this "Wake Up" campaign for? There is a web site associated with this campaign that simply has a count down timer to May 7 in which RIM is apparently going to make a big announcement. RIM has mentioned that the announcement will aim to provoke conversation on what "being in business" means to Australians, one has to wonder why would they make something business like so exciting.

Regardless of how careful we try to be with our new devices, they are always bound to be dropped off a table or some other object. I'm currently on a search for the perfect case that brings comfort, but also protection to my device. Today, we'll take a few moments to look at the iSkin Aura For BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930.

We knew this was coming! Just a couple days ago we got our first look at the BB 10 Alpha dev device in which had us all questioning the physique and details of the body. Today, the device gets undressed a bit more as CB posts more leaked photos, yet again. This time showing some hardware features, and from different angles.

Something else I ought to point out in the middle of all of this leaked photo pandemonium, is that the mockup I made of a BB 10 device looks strikingly along the same lines *snickers*. But I was going off of what we were told by RIM, that the device would look similar to the PlayBook. Amazing what fakes we saw along the way. Just riveting! But remember, this is just a Alpha device, and we are told by RIM that this device is not going to be the finished product BB 10 device to release this fall.

It looks as though from the images that there is a HDMI, USB, and possibly a SIM or SD slot on one side. On the other the volume controls which most likely will model after the PlayBook's volume up/down and play/pause button in between. There is no buttons on the homescreen (yes!), which means that gestures are most likely going to be part of how the OS operates.

I'm betting we see a few more leaked photos of the the actual OS in action before the BlackBerry 10 Alpha devices are given out at the BB 10 Jam conference on Wednesday. Stay tuned...

Check out the other BB 10 Alpha pics in the forums, and let us know what you think about the leaked shots of the BlackBerry 10 Alpha Dev device in the comments!

Last week, we received an updated PlayBook OS (2.0.1.358), and with a bit of investigative work we discovered that RIM had updated their preloaded/default apps for PlayBook. Zinio, a premier app for magazines now comes preloaded on PlayBook. Since it's release in mid-March, Zinio has grown exponentially in it's amount of users. It's great to see RIM creating this lasting partnership with Zinio.

Zinio is the premier app for magazines, giving readers immediate access to thousands of global titles. Read and download single issues or subscriptions of your favorite magazines and sync your library to your home computer, smart phone and tablet seamlessly. Keep up with trending topics and stories from magazines like Rolling Stone, The Economist, Hello!, US Weekly, T3, Macworld, Travel + Leisure and many more.

Gazelle, one of the largest electronic trade-in service has reported a massive spike in BlackBerry trade-ins. Gazelle's Chief Gadget Officer Anthony Scarsella seems to think that " Consumers could be starting to fear the end of the Canadian based device maker." Unfortunately Mr. Scarsella's opinions seem to seem to be shared by quite a few others, and the term "RIM is dead", has also been loosely.

Scarsella goes on to say that the company's "data illustrates that BlackBerry trade-ins have risen 80% above the normal 30-day average since March 1st here at Gazelle [...] Consumers could be starting to fear the end of the Canadian based device maker. BlackBerry owners are indeed starting to dump their current smartphones before their beloved BBM and email support comes to a screeching stop if RIM collapse. The fear of rapid depreciation and unsupported devices has consumers upgrading to other platforms quicker than ever before.”

One would have to be in denial if they did not see the sudden spike in BlackBerry trade-ins as a concern, but what about the comments about consumers fearing the end of RIM. Is there any truth to this? To be frank, there actually is, but for the wrong reasons. The fact is that consumers are suckers when it comes to going with whatever the media says. Comments like " RIM is dead" are simply not true and are based on the medias assumption rather than the cold hard facts. Last I checked a company that is worth over 7 Billion dollars was considered to be doing quite well, A dead company is bankrupt and simply can't move on, a dead company has no hope for a future, a dead company, has no plans for the future. I would venture to say that RIM has addressed all of those characteristics that mark a dead company.

About a week ago we reported that today, Tues the 24th, BlackBerry Beta Zone website was going to get a much needed redesign and it's finally happened! The overall redesign UI is more "blog-like" to give the site a overall easy navigational feel.

The forums are also going to get a makeover so members can keep track of their latest posts, ect. The mobile interface will be much improved and easier to navigate, and a new 2 click feature will be implemented so it takes only 2 clicks to start new beta downloads.

I for one am really exited for this redesign, and for sure we will see a much needed spike in the beta testing community to get active in making these native RIM apps how we'd like them.

Are you a Beta Zone member/tester? Let us know what you think of this redesign in the comments! If not, get signed up today!

I was pleasantly surprised today when our good buddy Alex Kinsella tweeted about a new musical app making its debut in App World. MorphWiz-Play brings the best of synthesizers to our tablets and utilizes the native accelerometer to make them rock even more.

Check out what they had to say about their app:
MorphWiz, the brain child of Dream Theater keyboardist, Jordan Rudess, and award-winning developer, Kevin Chartier, took the music app business by storm, winning Billboard’s Best Music Creation App, the Best App Ever award for Best Music App, and an Electronic Musician Editor’s choice award. Jordan uses MorphWiz on stage and in the studio with his prog-metal band, Dream Theater. MorphWiz-Play takes the deep synthesis and immersive visuals of MorphWiz and packages it into 30 custom presets programmed personally by the Wizard himself, Jordan Rudess.
I just purchased the app and after messing around with it for about 10 minutes I have to say I love it. I can't wait to mess with it more and be able to fully exploit its potential.
