Over the past few months RIM has been working hard to improve its BlackBerry App World. We have seen much improvements with the recent releases such as a revamped user interface. Now RIM is working on version 3.1 which will allow for one very important feature, WiFi support. That means if you have a wifi connection you can still download all your favorite apps, and at faster speeds. In addition another new feature called "gifting" will also be available. This new feature allows you to download a app that someone else paid for.

These two features will be a nice addition to the current App World. I am really looking forward to the WiFi support. What do you think about these two new features?

BlackBerry Innovation Forum 2011, Washington DC Recap

    1. BlackBerry News

Earlier today I had the opportunity to attend the BlackBerry Innovation Forum 2011 in Washington DC. The event is part of a circuit of forums held by RIM at various locations. The idea behind these forums is to show organizations what BlackBerry can do for them, and how they can take advantage of various solutions that RIM has to offer. This one was not as elaborate as the ones in London or EMEA, but did provide a wealth of information regarding the future of BlackBerry.

I was able to gather up quite a bit of information from the breakout sessions, and was able to chat with several RIM employees about the star of the show, the BlackBerry PlayBook. Here is a brief overview of some key points that you may find interesting.

    PlayBook 2.0
    • Will have native email client with a a unique feature rich UI. Client will have more options than current bridge based mail client
    • Calendar completely revamped, and includes new "people view" feature
    • No plans for BBM client
    • Native file app
    • Contacts app more feature rich, more like current BlackBerry's Contact list.
    • Target date around February 2012
    Misc
    • RIM is working on Bluetooth keyboard and case that fit together for the PlayBook. Release around February 2012. Cost is a little over $100
    • RIM working on Enterprise App World for enterprise applications
    • OS 7.1 is looking like a December release
    • UMA update for 9900 may come later this year
    • RIM Working on 10" PlayBook, and larger BlackBerry devices for next year
I was able to see a live demo of Playbook 2.0 and everything was working smooth and crisp. So the final product should not be disappointing. I also got to see the new Bluetooth keyboard and case for the Playbook and they both look amazing. Overall big things happening in the world of BlackBerry. 2012 is looking like the year of the BlackBerry.

The security gurus over at RIM continue to do what they do best, and make sure that every device released by the company is as secure as it can be. Today RIM has announced that its newly released OS 7 devices have reached EAL4+ certification. In short the EAL stands for Evaluation Assurance Level, and is used to grade IT products or systems to make sure that they meet industry security standards.

Here is the official statement from RIM:

Waterloo, ON - Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ:RIMM)(TSX:RIM) today announced that BlackBerry® smartphones running on the BlackBerry® 7 Operating System (OS) have been independently evaluated by a third-party Common Criteria evaluation facility and meet the security criteria for evaluation assurance level (EAL) 4+.

The Common Criteria is an international standard for validating that products meet specific security requirements. Widely respected for its extensive and comprehensive evaluation by an independent third party, EAL4+ accreditation examines a product’s design, software development methodology, and security mechanisms. EAL4+ is the highest level of accreditation under the Common Criteria Recognition Arrangement (CCRA) by 26 countries.

“Security is one of the most important considerations for enterprise customers and we are proud that BlackBerry 7 OS has earned this rigorous certification,” said Scott Totzke, Senior Vice President, BlackBerry Security at RIM. “RIM is renowned as a market leader in the delivery of secure mobile solutions, and this achievement helps to provide our customers globally with continued confidence in deploying BlackBerry solutions throughout their organizations.”

As a market leader in the area of information assurance and compliance, RIM is committed to independent, third party security testing and certifications of BlackBerry products. RIM is active in the Cryptographic Module Validation Program in North America, United Kingdom CESG Assisted Product Service (CAPS) and International Common Criteria evaluation scheme. BlackBerry® Enterprise Server has been previously awarded EAL4+ certification and the BlackBerry Enterprise Solution has also been previously approved for storing and transmitting sensitive data by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) as well as government organizations in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Austria, Australia and New Zealand.
