Research In Motions Releases Statement Regarding Carrier IQ

The Carrier IQ debate has taken over the internet in the last 24 hours. For those of you that might not know what Carrier IQ is, the definition is pretty basic. In short, Carrier IQ is a third-party software that's installed a device to monitor and keep track of everything a user does on said device. Both manufacturers and carriers love to know what you, as the user, use your device for to more accurately target advertising, promotions; etc. The legality issue comes into question though when something is planted in our devices without our knowledge and/or consent. Since the Carrier IQ software is not integrated to the native OS of any major phone manufacturer, it's up to each individual carrier or manufacturer to install it independently.

New BlackBerry App World Content Ratings Improve Discovery And Safety

RIM is bringing a new feature to the App World storefront that is designed to make publishing and discovering apps much safer for everyone involved. On Wednesday November 30th, 2011 RIM will be performing a server upgrade that will bring content rating to the storefront. The content rating system has been planned out based on input from our carrier, consumer, and developer partners to make sure they've implemented a content rating system that helps parents control what types of content their children have access to. After the upgrade is complete, all applications and themes in the BlackBerry App World storefront will receive a default rating. The majority of apps will be rated G (General). If your app or theme is in one of the categories listed below, it’ll receive a rating of T (Teen). When users upgrade to BlackBerry App World 3.1, they’ll be able to change their rating filter.

As for developers, starting on November 30th, 2011 you will have 15 days to log into the Vendor Portal and update your Content Rating questions if you believe your app or theme should have a different rating. All new apps being submitted that day will require that the Content Rating questions be answered.

AT&T wants to know if the last text message you received is worth the chance of possibly getting into a vehicle collision and harming yourself or someone else. More likely than not, the answer would be "no". AT&T is striving to change the views of people about texting and driving. The risk factors of taking your eyes off the road for even just a few seconds to respond are not comparable to doing your best to ensure the safety of all the drivers on the road by not using your phone while driving. Now there's an app that can help take away the temptation to check your phone: AT&T's DriveMode App for BlackBerry.
    • You have a customizable "Allow List" of up to five contacts of your choosing to keep the ability to make and receive calls while DriveMode is enabled.
    • The app allows you to have one (1) music app and one (1) navigation app open when DriveMode is enabled.
    • By downloading DriveMode, participants are automatically signing AT&T's It Can Wait pledge to not text and drive.
    • Once DriveMode is disabled, you will be able to text, call, tweet, email, and play with your apps as usual.
So join the fight to stop texting and driving by downloading this app today. Use it, love it, pass it on and save a life. Help AT&T and all those who have signed the pledge by downloading the app to make the roads a safer place for everyone.

    RIM Responds To "dingleberry" Jailbreak

A few days ago reports came out that the PlayBook was rooted. Code named "dingleberry", the jailbreak allows the user full access to the PlayBooks QNX based operating system. We knew it would only be a matter of time before we heard a response from RIM regarding the issue. The following is an email response we got from RIM regarding the jailbreak:

“Research In Motion (RIM) is aware of a claim made on Twitter by security researchers working together that suggests the ability to “jailbreak” a BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. The term “jailbreaking” is commonly used to describe altering the software on a smartphone or tablet in order to obtain access to systems or applications not officially authorized or distributed by the manufacturer. BlackBerry smartphone users are not affected.RIM is currently investigating this claim and has been in contact with one of the security researchers to discuss it.

RIM is currently not aware of a jailbreak being leveraged by anyone other than the researchers, who claim to have performed a jailbreak on their own BlackBerry PlayBook tablets only. If it is determined that the claim is accurate, RIM will follow its standard response process to develop and release a software update that is designed to minimize adverse impact to our customers or carrier partners. RIM is aware that the security researchers have stated they intend to release a tool to jailbreak the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. If such a tool is released, RIM will investigate it.

The security of mobile devices and major networked systems is tested by third-party security researchers every day. RIM also continually tests the security of its own products, and volunteers its products to recognized industry experts for security testing and certification to help identify possible issues. RIM is committed to the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet and to working with researchers to continue to protect our customers.
Now its just a matter of time before the cat and mouse games that Apple plays with it's jaibreaker's make their way to the world of BlackBerry.

Exclusive: RIM Renames Leaked BBX Phone As The BlackBerry "Surfboard"

It turns out all that extra bezel space we saw on the leaked BlackBerry "London" pic serves an alternative purpose, and as you can see from the pic above it was only natural that RIM rename this device as the BlackBerry "Surfboard." And as always, it's good to see Mike Lazaridis get his "feet wet" and go hands-on again in the testing of new BB devices. Rumor also has it that RIM already acquired sponsors such as BodyGlove and BillaBong to showcase the device in the next Surf-fest USA competition! Surf's up, dudes and dudettes!

Update: TechCrunch verifies that RIM filed for the BlackBerry Surfboard trademark in the Canadian Intellectual Property Office in July 2010, and has been sitting on it ever since.

Boost Mobile Viral Marketing Campaign: BBM Music Gum

They say that people will flock to you if you give them free candy. Boost Mobile seems to think highly of that idea, as they've started handing out BBM Music branded packs of gums to promote their $60 per month BlackBerry plans.

If you add BBM Music, at $65 ($60 plan + $5 for BBM music) they are still much cheaper than most other carriers around in the USA.

Would RIM sell more devices if they all came with a pack of BlackBerry-branded gum?

When I'm out for my late night walks, sometimes a flashlight will help me see where I'm going. I find it a pain to go to the camera app on my phone, switch it to "video" & press my Space bar to get the flash on my BlackBerry to work as a flashlight.

S4BB has heard my cry (& the cries of many others) by releasing an update to their Flashlight Pro app. The all new Flashlight Pro 3 version comes with the brightest flashlight ever! This updated version now supports OS 6 & 7 devices.

Flashlight Pro V3.0.2 brings many new features, including:

    • Uses both the camera light and screen light as a flashlight.
    • Camera light will never turn off! No time limit!
    • Sets the brightness of the screenlight to full bright for extra lighting.
    • Useful help screen for quick reference.
    • Morses a SOS-Message in an endless loop by turning the camera light and screen light on and off according to the international morse code.

It's always a great sign that a carrier prepping to release a device when images of the device arriving at one of their retail locations appears online.

If Virgin Mobile Canada is planning to follow big brother Bell Canada in launching this device, we will see it available as soon as December 2nd. Pricing is unknown at this time, but it's safe to say we will see similar prices as Bell in the $450 to $480 range without a contract.

Rogers hasn't kept it a secret that they plan to start carrying the Bold 9790 before the holiday season. Their pricing has recently leaked online.

3-year contract: $99.99 (with a $45/monthly voice and data plan)
    2-year contract: $349.99
    1-year contract: $399.99
    No-contract: $449.99
These prices seem a bit lower than what we've recently seen from Telus. The device is being targeted to business users & young professionals, so don't be surprised if most of Rogers' advertisement for this device explain mostly it's business-minded key features.
