Monday mornings tend to be lazy for most of us, but RIM decided to change that today!

After surprising us this morning with the official release of BlackBerry OS 7.1 (including BBM 6.1 coming out of beta), we've received confirmation that CES 2012 attendees who visit the BlackBerry booth (South Hall 3 Booth # 30326) will get the opportunity to preview the upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 functionality, including:

    • New unified inbox - a powerful unified inbox within the built-in messaging app allows users to quickly manage their personal email and work email accounts as well as the messaging capabilities of popular social networking sites like Twitter®, LinkedIn® and others - all in one place.
    • Inbox management tools - allows for powerful inbox search across multiple email accounts, as well as the ability to set out-of-office messages and email signatures directly from their tablet.
    • Relationship-centric contacts app - more than just an address book, the new built-in Contacts app serves as a social hub - merging and consolidating information from multiple sources (including email and social channels) into one contact file for each person in their address book. Each contact file includes information such as recent status updates, conversations, related news articles and mutual contacts that are kept up-to-date automatically.
    • Remote control for the BlackBerry PlayBook - new BlackBerry® Bridge™ features allow a user's BlackBerry® smartphone to act as a keyboard and mouse for their BlackBerry PlayBook - effectively providing a wireless remote control for their tablet. Perfect for pausing a movie when a BlackBerry PlayBook is plugged in to a TV with an HDMI connection, or for using the tactile QWERTY keyboard on a BlackBerry smartphone to compose a message or document on the BlackBerry PlayBook.
    • Print To Go application - this app allows users to wirelessly "print" from their laptop or PC directly to their BlackBerry PlayBook over Wi-Fi®. A digital printout is created on the BlackBerry PlayBook so that users can view, sort and manage their digital printouts as though they were physical sheets of paper. The Print To Go app is the perfect way to consolidate info from various related sources like a hotel web confirmation, an airline boarding pass email, the show event schedule or even a map of the destination city and make them available for quick access on the go.
    • Video store (available in the United States @ launch) - a catalog of thousands of movies and TV shows will be available through the integrated BlackBerry Video Storefront* with new releases to be made available for purchase or rent the same day they come out on DVD. Users will be able to begin watching media as soon as they start to download the file, so users won't have to wait for the entire file to transfer before they can enjoy great entertainment on the tablet's high resolution display, or on an HDTV via the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet's HDMI output.
    • Enhanced web browsing - the BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 browser also includes a new reading view, which is designed to make web sites even easier to enjoy by eliminating page clutter at the touch of a button. What's left is a cleaner format that is great for reading online news articles, blog posts, or websites that contain heavy amounts of text.
Tons of awesome features, right? We've only highlighted a few of the features above, but you can see the extensive full list in our forums.

They've also confirmed that PlayBook OS 2.0 software update will be available for all BlackBerry PlayBook users in February 2012.

If you didn't feel excited about OS 2.0 for PlayBook before, I don't see any reason now that you won't be jumping on the opportunity to purchase one of these tablets prior to the new OS launching.

Bold 9930 & Torch 9850 OS 7.1 Updates Coming To Verizon On Jan 10th

Looks like on Jan 10th Big Red is set to start releasing OS 7.1 updates for the Bold 9930 and Torch 9850 BlackBerry devices. If you don't want to wait for the release, you can download the Sprint version of 7.1 in our site Downloads Center. Nice to see Verizon making an effort to update, but somehow I'm left wondering if it's just to milk $20/month off subscribers for the new mobile hotspot feature.

    BlackBerry Porsche P’9981 Theme for Torch 9850/60 & Bold 9900/30 - Compatible with OS 7 & 7.1

Many of us wish we had a P'9981 in our possession, but due to the price tag this will likely only be a pipe dream for many. We've seen a few different sites extract the theme & some even release it for OS 6 devices, but for those of us running OS 7.1, we were left without an extracted theme to load on our devices.

Thanks to drkapprentice's theme skills, we now have a BlackBerry Porsche P’9981 Theme for Torch 9850/60 & Bold 99xx series that is compatible with OS 7 & 7.1

This theme is a major upgrade from the stock theme that you find on your Bold 9900 device. One of my favorite aspects of this theme is the skinned media player.

Note: You may get an error when activating this theme, but the theme still actvates. If it does not activate go into options and activate there. A reboot may be necessary and is recommended after the theme is activated.

RIM To Show Off PlayBook OS 2.0 At CES 2012

The long awaited PlayBook OS 2.0 is set to have a guest appearance at this months Consumer Electronics Show (CES) RIM has been sending out invitations to an "intimate event" that will allow attendees to experience the BlackBerry PlayBook's new OS 2.0. This also suggest RIM is not going to have a very strong presence at the years biggest electronic show.

Back in October we heard that PlayBook's OS 2 would be delayed until February. Does this mean that we could see an early release? Over the past few months we have seen glimpses of OS 2.0 and have been really impressed. I was able to get hands on at the BIF 2011, and I can confirm it is everything that has been missing from OS 1.0 and much more. The release of this OS is a make or break for the PlayBook device so I am looking forward to updating to OS 2.0.

Is it a full moon tonight somewhere? AT&T has released a OS update for a BlackBerry device. If that's not strange enough, it's for the BlackBerry Torch 2 9810. I must say I was overjoyed to see this until I noticed the build. AT&T decided to go with .583 even though a .585 had been leaked online already. Nevertheless, it's always better to have an official build so if you have a Torch 2, download it, install it on your PC, delete the vendor.xml file (if you're not on AT&T), install it on your device, and let us know what you tihnk!

BlackBerry 10 To Be Shown Off At Mobile World Congress

The most recent news that the BlackBerry community has gotten wind of was that Research in Motion has plans to show off the new BlackBerry 10 operating system at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain from February 27th through March 1st.

A spokesperson at RIM has stated:
"2012 will be the year of BlackBerry 10 so we'll be showcasing the capabilities of our future operating system as well demonstrating the power of BlackBerry 7, with a particular focus on NFC and BBM connected apps. Research in Motion will be there in force."

While this doesn't necessarily mean that the actual phones will be set up to be played with, having official details on how the new OS will work is a definite plus. That may hold off the riots for a little while longer. On top of the reveal of BB10, BB7 seems to be another popular aspect of RIM's revival plan. I'm curious about the new operating system, sure, but those phones could be a long way out. I'm more excited to see how much more I can get out of my BlackBerry Bold 9900. Research in Motion says this is "The year of BlackBerry 10", but the year is young, and we've got a long way to go. Hopefully their determination stays strong and continues for a long time down the road.

BlackBerry Introduces: BlackBerry Fan Of The Month

    by
    AgentBlackBerry

Speaking with BlackBerry's PR people at the BBM Ugly Sweaters event in NYC last month, one thing they kept on reiterating is how badly they are trying to connect with the BlackBerry community and each individual user. Today BlackBerry has shown how they are trying to do this as they introduced the BlackBerry Fan of the Month program with their first fan of the month: Brian.

The BlackBerry Fan of the Month is exactly what you expect it to be, an interview with a hardcore BlackBerry fan. I definitely disagree with this assessment as I felt I was the BlackBerry fan of the Year to be completely honest (I mean I am @AgentBlackBerry), but regardless Brian definitely seems like he's worthy of the honor as well.

According to the BlackBerry Official Blog:
Brian is one of our most active #TeamBlackBerry members on Twitter (@BlackBerry, @BlackBerryHelp, @BlackBerry4Biz, @BlackBerryDev, @BlackBerryScene and @BlackBerryBlog) and we can count on him to be a helpful leader in our community. He’s the proud owner of a BlackBerry® Bold™ 9930 smartphone and an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan. One of the main reasons Brian is our inaugural Fan of the Month is that he is always willing to lend a hand to other #TeamBlackBerry folks, whether he’s recommending a BlackBerry smartphone or passing along some #BBTips.
    • Check out the full interview with Brian at blogs.blackberry.com
Now all this is great, but RIM needs to take a serious look not only at their loyal fans that have positive things to say about BlackBerry but also at the die-hard BlackBerry users that point out the areas in which they can improve. Only then will they be able to realize that, even though there have been many positives, the way things have been going these last couple of years as a whole are simply not acceptable. If they can couple that negative but constructive feedback with positive PR generating programs like this one, BlackBerry's future can be bright.

Could We See BlackBerry 10 On Non-BlackBerry Devices?

Could this picture end up being a reality sometime in 2012 or 2013? Could we end up seeing BlackBerry 10 on HTC, Samsung and other hardware manufacturers' devices? According to Jefferies' Peter Misek this is definitely not only a possibility but talks have already started to make it happen.

"We think some of this has already been started with RIM likely agreeing to license Blackberry 10 to Samsung, HTC, and possibly others. This would help create a critical mass for the ecosystem and maintain RIM’s monthly service revenue; however, it puts more pressure on the hardware business in the short term. Longer term, it possibly gets people hooked on the RIM ecosystem and may in fact allow them to sell more BB 10 handsets (if they are able to create compelling handsets)."
Why would RIM even think about doing this? Well if you think about it, the costs of manufacturing hardware would be cut down as less phones would need to made and they would instead take a more Google-like approach and rent out their OS per say.

Both HTC and Samsung run Android and WP7 OSes and have been successful doing so. The chance of them taking on another OS with such an uncertain future as the BlackBerry 10 OS could be unlikely. Also the hardware compatibility issue is big one as well as BlackBerry 10 sounds like it'll be a gesture-dependent OS for which who knows if HTC or Samsung could develop hardware.

That being said, the perspective of having BlackBerry email and BBM as anchors to this new OS could make it very enticing for some of these companies to adopt BlackBerry 10.

I love rumors, especially during such a slow time of the year with BlackBerry news. We'll see if anything comes out of this one in the near future.

There are reports that the BlackBerry PlayBook has sold out in India. Two retailers in India (Ingram and Redington) said they have sold 12,000 PlayBooks in just four days. RIM’s India Managing Director Sunil Dutt says that “BlackBerry continues to be an inspirational brand and we have seen a huge uptake across the country for the PlayBook during the offer period.”

Prices were slashed by more that 50% across the globe which spurred the increased sales of the tablet. If you are looking to get your hands on a PlayBook now is the time. Eat your heart out iPad!

Local Porsche Design stores have begun decorating for the upcoming release of the BlackBerry Porsche Design P'9981. The intended date isn't 100% set, I think, but the Porsche Design stores have said one day in the last week of February 2012. The price is steep, set at $1,700, but if your wallet is willing and your heart aches enough for one of these beautiful BlackBerrys, find the closest Porsche Design store to run over and pre-order one of your very own! If you're feeling in the generous spirit, it's almost my birthday and I'd be more than willing to accept such a wonderful gift!

    RIM Leaning Towards New Chairman

Research In Motion has been under extreme pressure from its shareholders to shake things up from top of the latter on down. While we've seen a couple of different Senior VPs step down in the last few months, the two headed co-CEO tandem of Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsielle has up until this point been left untouched.

Back in July, 2011, RIM said in a statement it would form a committee to investigate how the structure of the company could possibly be changed in order to improve it. Today, the Financial Post is reporting that this shake up will indeed happen and that Barbara Stymiest (pictured above) is the leading candidate to be appointed lead chairman of RIM's board. According to their sources, the investigation is still under review and the company could opt to go a number of different ways but Stymiest is being considered the top choice due to her background work as COO of Royal Bank of Canada and later head of the TSX Group Inc.

The decision and outcome of the evaluation process will be announced by the company's independent directors recommendation report on January 31st of this year. With news of this possible structural change for RIM, their stocks have risen 8% this morning to $15.67.

I've looked high & low for a FourSquare app for the BlackBerry PlayBook, but apparently I wasn't looking in the right places. While looking recently in "Recently Updated" apps on App World, I noticed FourPlay.

    FourPlay For PlayBerry PlayBook
is exactly what you'd expect from a FourSquare app on your tablet. This 3rd party Foursquare app brings all the features you'll find on your official FourSquare app found on your BlackBerry Smartphone. I was amazed at the fact that my location was more accurate within this app than it is when I use my Bold 9900.

With many tweaks/updates rumored to be coming to a future build planned to be released around the same time as PlayBook OS 2.0, & with no plans official 4Sq app on the horizon, this application is a must have for anyone who checks-in often.
