Leaked Apps For OS 7; BBM v6.1.0.55, Facebook for BlackBerry v2.0.0.61 And More

Apps, apps, and more apps have been leaked today. The Beta Zone has been such a dead area recently that we'll have to deal with these small updates for now. Updates to Facebook, BBM, Social Feeds, and Docs2Go have been leaked this evening by @jelounge.

Keep in mind, these apps are NOT official versions released by RIM and are only meant for OS 7 devices for the time being. As unofficial versions, download them only if you are comfortable doing so, knowing they could potentially mess up your device like any other leaked application.

During this morning's keynote at DevCon Europe, Vivek Bhardwaj, Head of Software Portfolio EMEA at RIM, attempted to show off the "open on" feature of BlackBerry Bridge 2.0 and unfortunately the "demo gremlins" did not allow it to work fully. After the keynote, BlackBerryDevCon's official YouTube channel uploaded the above video showing off the feature and how it's suppose to work. Honestly, it's one of my favorite new features of 2.0 since it is one of those "wow" features. Make sure you check out the video above for a demo of this new aspect of BlackBerry Bridge 2.0.

Wallstreet Believes RIM Should Drop Hardware; License BB10 Only

Jefferies & Co analyst Peter Misek, who has followed RIM and BlackBerry very closely for the last couple of years, has downgraded his rating on Research in Motion to "Underperform" from "Hold" with a target stock price of $15 (from $17 previously).

No deal to license BlackBerry 10 in any way in the near future.
After meeting with new RIM CEO Thorsten Heins and finding him "engaging, articulate, and thoughtful," Misek believes it's a mistake to not bring BlackBerry's secure email, their strongest point according to him, to iOS and Android. While they believe this will eventually happen (they estimate it'll take another year), for now not moving towards that is a bad strategy. The proposed plan to license BB10 to Samsung and "to launch a new BBM, email, and social networking app for iOS/Android for a monthly fee" will also end as just that they believe, a plan.

No positive headlines or news any time soon.
Even though BB10 is coming, it's not coming soon enough. They firmly believe BB10 to be "an excellent OS" but it seems they have simply lost faith in RIM's capability to put a complete product out there and be popular once again (software, hardware and marketing). The licensing argument is something that's been around for the past weeks and before Heins was appointed as the new CEO, many believed that would be the only way out for RIM.

[Update] RIM Offering Free PlayBook To Any Developers For App Submission Before Feb 13th, 2012

[UPDATE 2/3/2012 4:00PM] Apparently the BlackBerry community's response to this original offer was huge. So huge in fact that RIM is now extending this offer to "any app – WebWorks, Native, AIR, and Android. Same deadline of February 13 applies."

    ------------------------------------------------------

There is huge buzz surrounding the release of OS 2.0 for the BlackBerry PlayBook. With the possible release date a little over two weeks away, RIM is doing everything it can to get as many Android apps as possible ready for the new OS launch. Today, the Inside BlackBerry Blog posted a new promotion for Android app developers:

The plan is to provide one free 16GB BlackBerry PlayBook to every registered BlackBerry App World vendor who converts their Android app for use on the BlackBerry PlayBook and submits it to BlackBerry App World between February 2, 2012 and February 13, 2012.
More details about the promotion will be posted on the Inside BlackBerry Blog as soon as possible but for now that stands to be a pretty awesome promotion for Android app developers. We're hopeful this creates a nice wave of developers that if, for no other reason, will port their apps over to App World to get a free tablet.

This is a pretty smart idea on RIM's part. With the recent low prices of the PlayBook, odds are most people are opting to go for a higher capacity tablet (32GB and 64GB), leaving RIM with a lot of 16GB tablets lying around. Giving these away in exchange for something, like Android apps in App World, will only help the momentum of the OS 2.0 launch. Smart move RIM, smart move indeed.

I'm a true believer in keeping things simple. When I started using my Bold 9900, I left my iPod Classic to collect dust at home. I could easily sync my current music library through Desktop Manager, but really didn't feel like having to export purchased songs from iTunes.

When BlackBerry Music Store was released in Beta Zone, i fell in love with it. It became my music purchase option of choice. Powered by 7Digital, this app gives me access to the same music locker between both my BlackBerry Bold 9900 & my PlayBook (BlackBerry Music on the PlayBook is also powered by 7Digital).

The application is currently only available in Australia & Canada.

    Features Include:

    • Browse the catalog by what’s new, top songs, top albums and genres
    • Store your music in the cloud via your 7Digital Music Locker easy portability across devices
    • Preview a 30-second sample before buying
    • Download over the wireless network or Wi-Fi®
    • Let friends know what you’re checking out via BlackBerry Messenger, Email, Text Messaging, Socials Feeds, Facebook and more...

RIM's Stymiest Promises More Forceful Board Amid Critics

    by

    Categories:

Coming into her second week of work at her new position, Barbara Stymiest, is already facing investor heat about her appointment. On Sunday, January 29th, RIM had a shake up at some key management positions; one of those being Stymiest as new Chair of the Board. Change seems to the message she hopes to spread in her role as Chair and she believes that it can be done.

“Driving change in an organization means a high-performing board and a high-quality management team,” Stymiest said in an interview with Bloomberg yesterday. “You get those two right and you can drive change quickly and effectively.”

Not everyone seems to effectively agree though. Jaguar CEO Vic Alboini said “she’s been part of the problem. I don’t think she’s going to be strong enough to make the changes necessary. We would say to her, ‘Prove us wrong.’” Another critic of the changes, Charlie Wolf of Needham & Co., believes previous management changed “as little change as possible” with these moves.

Stymiest remains positive amid all this. “We can improve on product execution and Thorsten is well- positioned to do that.” One way to be able to accomplish this according to Stymiest is the acquisition of more patents. “You’ll continue to see RIM make strategic acquisitions of patents to give it the degrees of freedom to have the most competitive, compelling device going forward,” she said.

At the end of the day, it's all about delivering a high quality product, correctly and on time. Barbara Stymiest believes her experience will allow her to provide “flawless oversight” of the management team which will get this done. Let's hope she's right.
