Back at CES 2012, RIM showed us that Zinio would soon be coming to the PlayBook. I've patiently awaited the arrival of this app, & was happy when Zinio today announced via their official Twitter account that we should expect to see the app in mid-March.

If you are not familiar with Zinio, it's the world's largest digital newsstand and bookstore.

Zinio has confirmed on many occasions that tons of PlayBook users emailed them asking for this app to be ported to PlayBook.

Will you be downloading Zinio once it launches?

If you're like me, you are very picky when it comes to choosing a theme for your cherished BlackBerry device. Over the past few months, I've tried several different themes on my BlackBerry Bold 9900 & few actually stood out to me like MINI_banner did!

This theme is made by _Lucky45 & drkapprentice. It started off as just another basic OS 7 theme, but with a smaller banner. With recent updates to this theme on February 20th, they've upped it to become stellar theme (& the first theme) with PlayBook 2.0 icons!

We had originally planned to post this theme update earlier today, but luckily we got word this evening that the theme had once again been updated, this time to v2.0.18 which includes a RED glowing banner for missed calls & new emails.

SwiftKey Keyboard Used In BlackBerry Playbook OS 2.0 Update

When RIM decided to go all out with tweaking PlayBook OS 2.0, they seem to have called for the help of SwiftKey, one of the most popular third-party Android keyboard developers, to tweak their keyboard.

How do we find out about this? Well, SwiftKey has openly discussed several Easter Eggs bundled in its autocorrect system: If you type in “Ben”, you'll see the first suggestion is “Medlock,” the SwiftKey’s CTO. It is to be noted that the keyboard adapts to your writing styles over time. If your name is also Ben, and you constantly enter your last name, it will replace “Medlock” at some point with your last name.

Let's hope to see the split-screen thumb SwiftKey keyboard in a future OS 2.0 update!

Ever since Mike Kirkup resigned from his post as Director of Dev Relations at RIM, we have been keeping an eye on what his next career move will be via the Mike Kirkup blog. As of yesterday, Mike has officially revealed what he has been hard at work creating - NextUp Labs.

NextUp Labs provides consulting services for early stage start-ups in the consumer web and mobile space to compliment existing teams. In short, NextUp Labs helps people turn their ideas into great businesses. Mike expands in his introduction:

"I believe entrepreneurs can use a partner who is directly aligned with their interests every step of the way. So, I created NextUp Labs to fill that role. Instead of accepting a fee for service, we want to help companies by sharing in their success through revenue share and equity."
I for one think this is a great idea as you don't have to fork our big bucks to take the risk in starting your dream business. I couldn't think of anyone more qualified to work with than Mike, as he was responsible for managing the technical relationships and programs for RIM’s developer community worldwide for several years. Mike is also the Director of VeloCity, a University of Waterloo startup incubator. Be sure to follow NextUp Labs on Twitter for updates, and let us know if you become a partner!

Netflix: "We Don’t Support BlackBerry Today, Our Plans Can Change."

Twitter exploded last night when official Netflix account @netflixhelps tweeted: "We don’t have any current plans to support Blackberry, including Playbook." BlackBerry fans everywhere decided to send countless amounts of tweets back to Netflix showing their extreme disappointment.

It became even more of an outage when people started to realize the devices they do support. Gaming devices like the Nintendo 3DS, and the PS Vita, which are not ideal streaming devices, all have Netflix support. The PlayBook and its beautiful 7" display, no luck.

The response from the BlackBerry community has been so overwhelming that @netflixhelps tweeted this afternoon in response:
"Generally we want to be on every screen that’s relevant to you. While we don’t support Blackberry today, our plans can change. Thanks all!"
Hopefully Netflix will see what it could potentially have in the BlackBerry community and release an app for us to enjoy. Until then, my subscription (which I canceled last night) will remain inactive. If you can't support my devices, I can't support you with my money.

Hey Hulu and Skype, start taking notes before we come after you two as well...

The most popular Twitter app on the BlackBerry PlayBook has received an update today that will make a lot of PlayBook users happy. Version 1.6 of Blaq was very solid, but Kisai Labs has decided to bring a lot of requested features to their users and we are pretty impressed to say the least. Check out the change log below.

    What’s new?
    • Portrait Mode
    • Auto-correct and spell check
    • LED notifications
      • New Tweets – White
      • Mentions – Blue
      • DMs – Green
      • Followers: Yellow
    • TweetMarker support – Never lose your spot again! TweetMarker bookmarks your position in any client supporting it (must be enabled in Advanced Options > Services)
    • Toggle Real-time streaming – This has been a HUGE request. Granted. Tap the real-time indicator to toggle.
    • Favorited tweets – Swipe from the top bezel then tap the star
    • Dedicated help section to make it easier to learn the ins and outs
    • Saved Searches – Easily tap the star in your search field to add a new saved search. Tap a saved search then untap the star to remove it. It’s that simple!
Check out more tips/info at the Kisai Labs blog page.

RIM And Other Mobile App Distributors Agree To New Privacy Policy Notification Standards

The California Attorney General has struck a deal with the world's major app store operators that will see new privacy policy standards put in place. RIM, Google, Microsoft, HP, Apple and Amazon have all agreed to require any software that uses personal information to provide a privacy policy that can be viewed in the store before an app is downloaded. The agreement will bring the various markets in line with the California Online Privacy Protection Act, which requires developers provide such a policy. In addition to providing links to the relevant documents in an obvious and consistent location, the companies will have to offer a simple way for users to report devs that violate the rules.

RIM And India Finally Reached Compromise?

    by
    Joe Jerde
    Published on 02-23-2012 04:23 PM

    1. BlackBerry News

It looks as though bout between RIM and the government of India may be finally reaching an end. If you remember, this match up goes way back to 2008 when the Indian government demanded access to encrypted BBM traffic. Then in 2010, RIM pulled punches and made a few compromises that dodged a ban. Now, it looks like things are getting a little crazy as RIM is putting 5,000 BES Enterprise servers in the city of Mumbai. Should advocates of privacy be worried? RIM went as far as to say back in Jan 2011 that in no way can they allow encrypted access to the Indian gov:

"No changes can be made to the security architecture for BlackBerry Enterprise Server customers since, contrary to any rumors, the security architecture is the same around the world and RIM truly has no ability to provide its customers’ encryption keys"
    and...

"There is no possibility of us providing any kind of a solution," RIM VP Robert Crow said to reporters. "There is no solution. There are no keys to be handed."..."It’s not possible to do so because the keys of the service are in possession of the corporate enterprises."
So were RIM's statements just a bunch of hot air? We don't know for certain yet, but if what is being reported is true, that a "team of officers" have already inspected the new installation and that "permission for direct monitoring" is "expected to be issued," then perhaps RIM will eventually have to hire a team of Indian spies to finally close out this epilogue.

Even with a crazy week of PlayBook OS 2.0 releasing, RIM is still finding time to quietly update some of it's native apps for BlackBerry devices.

Upon waking up today, I noticed that BlackBerry Travel had been updated to v2.0.40.99, but without a changelog. Likely it's for bug fixes.

The players, Scott Hartnell (Philadelphia Flyers), Bobby Ryan (Anaheim Ducks), Joffrey Lupul (Toronto Maple Leafs), Martin Biron (New York Rangers) and Michael Grabner (New York Islanders), will all take part in this new video series.

The new series will depict the players lives on and off the ice, and will be shot using the High Definition video camera of the BlackBerry PlayBook. The NHLPA Players' PlayBook will allow fans to do more than just watch a video. Fans will also be able to "call the shots". There will be a fan poll that will be held every Monday that will determine the "Fan's Choice Video". Question and answer sessions will be held each Wednesday that will allow the players to interact with the fans. To top the week off there will be an " Editors Choice Video", that will show some behind-the-scenes editing, and the editors favorite footage.

    Some highlights include:
    • FAN'S CHOICE VIDEO: Every week an online poll will allow fans to choose what video they would be most interested in watching based on where the players are and what's happening at the time.

    • QUESTION & ANSWER: Fans can ask players questions via the home website or by posting a comment on YouTube. Every week, the players will respond to fan submitted questions and challenges.
All of this sounds exciting, so if your a Hockey fan this will be the ultimate experience. Make sure you take some time to read the full press release, and visit the official website.

BlackBerry 10 OS To Debut At Mobile World Congress

Now that the excitement from the PlayBook OS 2.0 has stabilized its time to get ready for the next big thing. Mobile World Congress is the worlds largest mobile phone trade show. The show held in Barcelona, allows mobile manufactures to provide the public with their latest technology and newest mobile devices. Most every major mobile manufacturer will be there, and among those giants will be RIM.

Over the past few months there has been talk about RIM possible showing off one of its BB 10 devices. Although this has excited many members within the BlackBerry community, it sounds like this wont be the case. CNN has reported that RIM will not be showing any new hardware, but will be showing off the BB 10 OS. RIM has been trying its best to keeps its new BB 10 devices under wraps, but that has not kept purported leaked images from surfacing.

Since it seems as though we wont be seeing any new hardware, we can most likely expect so see the new OS depicted on some slides, or maybe even a video. Either way it will be nice to get more information on the BB 10 OS.

Following in big brother Bell Mobility footsteps, Virgin Mobile will be launching OS 7.1 tomorrow for the BlackBerry Curve 9360.

This is a major boost for the device, as it brings Wi-Fi hotspot (up to 5 devices), NFC features, FM Radio and other BlackBerry goodness.

Likely we will see this update come to us as 7.1.0.219, the same as Bell launched last week.
