Rogers And CIBC Announce Mobile NFC Wallet App To Launch This Year

Score one for BlackBerry exclusively. Rogers, a mobile carrier, and CIBC, a bank, have announced they will launching a mobile wallet app that will support NFC-enabled BlackBerry smartphones later this year in Canada.

Why is this important? Wel,l this will allow any user that has this app to make mobile payments using their BlackBerry device instead of a credit card. In order to do so, one will hold their BlackBerry up to the NFC terminal, a prompt on the phone will appear asking for their card PIN and that's it. Transaction complete!

Sounds pretty cool right? We think so too and we believe this is just the start of the future of mobile payments and for the time being, it's a BlackBerry-only thing.

A couple of weeks ago during BlackBerry World 2012 attendees were given a look at some of the new BlackBerry 10 features. Among those new features that wowed the crowd was the new gesture-based, predictive text touchscreen keyboard.

It is not very often that we reference anything Apple related, but BBOS member DownForce let us know in the forums that, BlackBerry users aren't the only ones excited for this new innovative new feature from RIM. iPhone users could see a clone of RIM's new gesture based predictive type keyboard as early as next week. The jailbreak tweak application Octopus will allow iPhone users to use the keyboard that most Blackberry users are only dreaming about now.

The Octopus keyboard has features that include, automatically learning new words as you type, custom completion engine, and multi-language support. Sound familiar? If not you will want to take another look at the BlackBerry 10 Sneak Peek Video we posted not too long ago.

This will be interesting to see how RIM responds to this as it is a jailbreak tweak and not mandated by Apple in any way. So the developer behind Octopus keyboard may find themselves in hot water within the next few weeks.

What do you think about this? Sound off in the forum.

RIM Files For Another Fuel Cell Patent

    by

Looks like RIM is still interested in the concept of fuel cell technology. The company has just filed for two similar patents one for the frame of a device and the other for the fuel tank itself. Now if your like me then you may be wondering if having some sort of fuel tank on a mobile device is safe.

Not to bore anyone with a history lesson, but the concept of fuel cells have been around since the mid 1800's . Since then it has been used by NASA and other companies for commercial use.

Either way patents are a nice way to see what direction a company is heading in their R&D department. Could this mean longer battery life? Will we one day have to charge our devices in the same way you would charge a butane lighter? Very interesting to say the least.

It seems Research In Motion is not keeping all their app promotions to the U.S. only, as a new one has now been extended to BlackBerry users in South America. The latest premium app to join the party is Nobex Radio and it's waiting for you to download it for free, compliments of BlackBerry.

This great app is available to all new OS 7 and 7.1 Curve owners (9360, 9320, 9220) for free. Think of it as a kind of incentive from RIM to get more people to purchase these new Curves. So if you're in South America and want to get your hands on Nobex Radio premium for free (normally a $9.99 vale) go get it by clicking the link below.

Don't forget, all owners of BlackBerry 7 devices in the U.S. can still download a slew of premium apps for free, compliments of BlackBerry, until May 31st.

With all of the excitement behind RIM's new BlackBerry 10 OS platform, many are wondering what will become of BBM. The messaging client has become a central figure among BlackBerry users and has been a huge selling point for RIM. The lack of a native BBM client on the PlayBook have turned some consumers away, and has left others thinking about its relationship to the BB 10 platform.
