The 4G BlackBerry PlayBook will come to a reality later on this year. RIM's CEO Thorsten Heins has confirmed that a 4G version will be coming by the end of the year. Early specs on the devices suggest that it will have a 1.5 Ghz dual-core processor, and NFC, other than that it is said to be pretty similar to the current PlayBook. RIM has also confirmed that they are working on a 10-inch PlayBook as well, which leaves one wondering if we may see a 10-inch LTE device by the end of the year.

No matter what the specs are, it still leaves some wondering how well consumers will perceive the new device. It was over a year ago that RIM first launched the PlayBook, and it is no secret how well that went. So will consumers give the PlayBook 4G another go? Will businesses embrace it with open arms? Only time will tell, but having a constant 4G connection on a superior device is pretty awesome!

RIM knows how to throw a party, that's definitely a given. This year with the BlackBerry World party in Universal Studios Orlando, they were able to incorporate one of the coolest apps I've seen on the PlayBook as well. The Pacemaker app, which had been announced as coming exclusively for the PlayBook, was live and on-hand last night.

To put it simply, the app is mind-blowing. As a DJ, I cannot wait to get it and be able to put it to the test. The guys that DJed last night, which included the famous "tools not toys" Martinez Brothers, were able to run all their music from the PlayBook, through Pacemaker, directly to the mixer and speakers. Nothing else needed. All the EQ, drops, effects; etc was done on the app. That was pretty amazing

The Pacemaker beta app will be available exclusively to BlackBerry World attendees this afternoon starting at 1pm today. We'll be breaking down this awesome app later today once we get our hands on it. For now, enjoy the rest of the pics from last night!

It took a while (since August of 2011) but today, Brandi Kolmer let us know that their imo instant messenger app has finally launched in App World. If you're not familiar with imo and what they do, the description is pretty straight forward.

imo for BlackBerry lets you talk to your friends on your imo, Skype, Google Talk, MSN, Facebook Chat, AIM, Jabber, Myspace, Hyves, VKontakte, Yahoo and Steam accounts.

    Features include:

    • Voice IMs: Send instant voice messages instead of typing
    • File sharing: Send audio, video, and pictures
    • Sleep mode: Turn off sound notifications for a set period of time
    • Location sharing: Let your friends know where you are by sharing your location
    • Chat history: Search your chat history quickly
    • Multimedia attachments: Share files and images
    • Morse code: Know who messages you without looking at your phone

Before anyone asks, Skype chat is supported on imo for BlackBerry but video chatting and calls over skype are obviously not. Either way, this is a great free app for all around communication that I've personally been testing for a bit and am very happy to see finally make its way to BlackBerry smartphones.

Hey imo, can you guys continue to be awesome and make an app for the PlayBook too?

Looks like BBM version 6.2 will be hanging around the Beta Zone for a little longer. Although it has already been officially released, members of the Beta Zone were notified that the BBM 6.2 beta program will remain open. Beta Zone coordinators have issued the following statement:
BlackBerry Messenger 6.2 Staying Open LongerHi everyone, Although BBM 6.2 has officially launched, the BlackBerry Messenger 6.2 Beta Program will be staying open slightly longer than orginally mentioned in the BBM 6.2 launch notice. That means more time for you to give feedback on the app! Keep it coming
In addition we have received word that some users are receiving BBM version 6.2.0.51. Not sure whats new in this version or what the change log is. We will just have to wait and see. If you are seeing this update be sure to let us know your findings an fixes.

It has been a strange couple of days for RIM, as they have been stuck in the middle of controversy once again. This time being blamed for a flash mob outside an Apple store in Sydney Australia. It was rather interesting how this one played out. Initially it was Samsung who was said to be behind the strange "Wake Up" campaign. However, Samsung publicly denied it stating that " Samsung Electronics Australia has nothing to do with the 'Wake-Up Campaign".

So who could it be? BBOS member DownForce pointed out in a forum post that RIM was now being blamed for the "Wake Up" protest, and pointed to and article that showed why. Some digging around by an associate at Macworld Australia showed that the websites sources code pointed to RIM's AU website. Sounds, like RIM got caught with their pants down on this one.

Furthermore, RIM has since issued a statement saying they were indeed behind the Australian "Wake Up" campaign. Richelle Gillett, the Account Director from Spectrum Communications for BlackBerry has issued the following statement:

“We can confirm that the Australian ‘Wake Up’ campaign, which involves a series of experiential activities taking place across Sydney and Melbourne, was created by RIM Australia. A reveal will take place on May 7th that will aim to provoke conversation on what ‘being in business’ means to Australians.

Strange, embarrassing, awkward may all be appropriate words to describe RIM's latest advertising campaign, but it does lead us to another question. What is this "Wake Up" campaign for? There is a web site associated with this campaign that simply has a count down timer to May 7 in which RIM is apparently going to make a big announcement. RIM has mentioned that the announcement will aim to provoke conversation on what "being in business" means to Australians, one has to wonder why would they make something business like so exciting.
