RIM to launch 10-inch BlackBerry PlayBook this fall - OS 7 devices delayed?

The guys over at BGR claim to have been told by 'multiple sources' that RIM is planning on releasing the next PlayBook design around this year's holiday season. Rumor has it the next PlayBook design will be a 10 inch model, adding to the already 7 inch model.

Also, via unconfirmed information - the just announced BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930 will not be launching until mid-August at the earliest. The previous timeframe for the launch was during June/July. The launch has been delayed for reasons unknown. Additionally, the rest of RIM’s 2011 lineup won’t be announced until BlackBerry’s DevCon conference on October 18th. Apparently the hierarchy at RIM have been vocally unhappy about the “disproportionate” reallocation of resources to the PlayBook away from the OS 7 lineup.

How about it? Would you buy a 10 inch PlayBook?

BlackBerry to integrate Bing services at the OS level

Steve Ballmer made an appearance today at BlackBerry World 2011 and announced a partnership between Microsoft and RIM to integrate Bing into BlackBerry products. In addition to making Bing the default search and map provider for all BlackBerry devices moving foward, services will be added at the OS level instead of being bundled as a series of apps. This will bring about features ranging from voice and location-aware search to panorama stitching. It also suggests that we'll likely see another iteration of BlackBerry OS 7 sometime before the Holiday season later this year!

What's your thought? Good or bad for RIM to make bedfellows with Bing? Would a Google integration be better?

Yep, you read it, RIM officially announced the BlackBerry Bold Touchscreen in a press release today, which (I guess) everyone was waiting for. The Bold 9900/9930 will feature a Touchscreen and a QWERTY keypad-although I'm not so sure that it will work properly on what looks like a small screen to work with. In spite of this, I am PUMPED at this announcement, of all the awesome specs the Bold will have. All the rumored specs are now shown to be true:
    • 115 x 66 x 10.5 mm, approximately 130 g
    • 2.8″ capacitive touch screen display – VGA (640×480), 287 dpi resolution
    • 1.2 GHz Processor, 768 MB RAM
    • Ultra-easy QWERTY keyboard, optical trackpad
    • 8 GB on-board memory, plus microSD slot supporting up to 32 GB cards
    • NFC technology
    • 5.0 MP camera, supports 720p HD video recording
    • Orientation Sensor (Accelerometer), Digital Compass (Magnetometer), Proximity Sensor
    • Built-in GPS / aGPS
    • Dual-Band Wi-Fi® – 802.11 b/g/n at 2.4 GHz and 802.11 a/n at 5 GHz
    • Bluetooth® 2.1+EDR support
    • GSM/EDGE
    • 1230 mAh removable, rechargeable battery
    • BlackBerry 7 OS

    Wireless Network Support:
    • 9900: Tri-BandHSPA+,Quad-BandGSM/EDGE
    • 9930: Dual-BandCDMA/EV-DORev.A,Dual-BandHSPA+,Quad-Band

8 GB on-board memory...that's just crazy! With the 1.2 GHz processor, I think this will be one speedy phone. HD Video Recording, BlackBerry OS7...wow. I just can't wait for the release of this phone!

    BlackBerry PlayBook heading to Verizon?

Thanks to Verizon's new online catalog we may have a peek into the future of what the rocky relationship will be for RIM devices. In the catalog, the PlayBook is featured as 'Coming Soon', which brings surprising news as many were skeptic about Verizon selling the tablet in their stores. The Bold 9650 and the Curve 3G 9330 are labeled as 'While supplies last' - which suggests that Verizon may be getting rid of those hand-held devices. We hope this doesn't happen without adding a few devices to the inventory. Back in February we posted a video in which the upcoming BlackBerry Touch 9850 was depicted with a Verizon brand on the back cover. At least it seems for now that Verizon will have a hand in the new hand-held devices set to release this year, but only time will tell which ones they choose.

First Credible Reports Of Bin Laden’s Death Tweeted from a BlackBerry

If you use Twitter then you most likely received the news of Osama Bin Laden's death before the US President was able to broadcast what happened.

Interestingly, our keen eyes here at BlackBerryOS noticed the tweet came from a BlackBerry - as shown in the image above. Keith Urbahn, the Chief of Staff for former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, tweeted from his BlackBerry:

"I'm told by a reputable person they have killed Osama Bin Laden."
Just goes to show, if you want the news first, just keep an eye on your BlackBerry.

Telmap becomes first BlackBerry app to integrate BlackBerry Messenger

You may remember during MWC 2011 RIM announced that BlackBerry Messenger 6.0 would be getting some new features. One of these features was the ability for 3rd party developers to integrate BBM into games, media, ect. The first to offer the integration is Telemap, thanks to the developer tools being launched last month. Telemap is a GPS service provider that powers apps from Orange, Telefonica, SFR, and other wireless carriers. The new function simply allows users to request and confirm location sharing through BBM, after which you can see where your contact is in Telmap and get turn-by-turn navigation directions to them. In addition to getting social on BlackBerry, Telmap has also recently added Facebook and Twitter functions to their Android GPS app. It's going to be interesting to see how far BBM integration will go for developers. And as always, we'll keep you updated on the latest.

Looks like this one was a webmaster blunder as the upcoming BlackBerry Bold Touch showed it's beautiful shape long enough for a user to capture a screenshot of the page. This comes to no surprise as it is almost fact by now that RIM plans to officially announce the Bold Touch 9900/9930 at the upcoming BlackBerry World 2011 event next week. By the snapshot looks like the motto is, 'Touching is Believing',... well? - let us touch the damn thing already!

Bell to deploy LTE network before end of 2011

Bell Mobility is apparently striving to reach the mobile carrier supremacy in Canada, as they have unofficially announced that they will be launching their LTE network before the end of 2011. This come merely days after Rogers made a similar announcement.

    According to an internal document:
Bell has completed 4G LTE trials and we are currently deploying LTE as well. Our competitors will not get in front of Bell’s network leadership. We do not make announcements about our competitive network or product plans that are too far in advance of their actual availability to customers.
With Bell & Telus having deployed their 3G HSPA+ together in late 2009, I wouldn't be surprised if we will see the same with LTE deployment.
