On Friday, Northern and Ethical Investments, an investor in Research In Motion, has called for a shareholder vote to decide if co-CEOs Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie should remain both co-chief executives and co-chairmen of the company’s board. Their proposal is that either Jim or Mike should be CEO and the other be Chairmen of the company's board. Reuters, reports that RIM has already ask their shareholders to vote down the proposal at this upcoming meeting.

Personally, I think that the Investors should back off. they make a great partnership and no matter their titles Jim and Mike still have the company's best interests at heart.

Apple and Google continue to gain on RIM's loss

Last Friday comScore released its latest mobile subscriber market share report, showing the continued trend of Google and Apple gaining on the falling numbers of RIM. To many of us BlackBerry fans out there, this comes as no surprise as patience begins to wear thin with the new BlackBerry OS 7 devices still far out of reach. Google's Android U.S. market share jumped 5.2 percentage points to a 34.6% grip of the industry. Meanwhile, Apple’s iOS market share grew a marginal 1.3 percentage points to a 26% share. RIM’s BlackBerry OS share fell from 30.4% in January to 25.7%, for a loss of 4.7% - a telling number to say the least. I don't have to beat a dead horse here, we all know why the number trends have continued the way they have. I think a nice surprise from RIM right now would be ideal to gain consumer confidence and boost RIM back on top in US smartphone subscribers. Leave us a comment on the recent comScore numbers. Any predictions?

Social gaming company Scoreloop joins RIM

Scoreloop has just joined Research In Motion to bring their expertise in creating social and collaborative gaming toolkits for mobile developers to the BlackBerry platform. Scoreloop is a pioneer in mobile social gaming and offers a customizable and cross-platform social mobile gaming developer tool kit. One has to wonder if RIM has plans to go cross platform in some way with this new acquisition?

Tyler Lessard, VP Global Alliances & Developer Relations at RIM, announces:

We have recently enabled our developers to create social app experiences through our BBM™ Social Platform and have seen some very innovative applications result from that. We look forward to working with the team at Scoreloop to provide tools that will further enable our developer community to take gaming to a new level of social integration on the BlackBerry platform. Stay tuned to the Inside BlackBerry Developer’s Blog and our @BlackBerryDev Twitter account for further updates on Scoreloop and the BlackBerry platform.

Why the Vodafone logo? Reports coming in, primarily from Vodafone UK users, say they have been experiencing data outages up to the last 24 hours or so. No official update on what the exact issue is, but hopefully this won't take long to resolve. A member reported back in late Feb that Vodafone UK had undergone some vandalism, but they were able to resolve any network issues very quickly. Let us hope that this is not the case again. If you are also experiencing data outages please leave a comment on where and who your carrier is.

Vodafone has posted a video on their YouTube channel featuring the sexy new BlackBerry Bold 9000. When should you expect to see this gem? We reported last month that Vodafone would be carrying the Bold 9900 but there has been some debate as to a certain launch date. Rumors have stated from mid August to sometime in the month of September. Either way, both rumors are still a ways off for those who are dying to get their hands on this new Bold device. Now for a few details from Vodafone:

The BlackBerry Bold 9900 is perfect for tapping out quick messages as well as detailed emails. That's because it gives you a touchscreen plus a full QWERTY keypad with larger keys than you'll find on the BlackBerry Bold 9780. The Bold 9900 also comes with a powerful 1.2GHZ processor that makes browsing the web a breeze where connection speeds allow. And whether it's your mate's party or your sister's wedding, you can capture your magic moments in pin-sharp high definition video.

You can buy the BlackBerry Bold 9900 from us when it launches.

Just register your details here - BlackBerry Bold 9900 smartphone ? coming soon to Vodafone - and we'll send you the latest information as soon as we get it.

Apple to challenge BBM with iMessage

    by
    Joe Jerde
    Published on 06-06-2011 08:46 PM
    Categories:

    2. BlackBerry Software

Today at Apple's WWDC 2011 keynote event, Apple has announced the upcoming additions for iOS 5. One of these features is a native messenger app called iMessage, which is basically a copycat of BlackBerry Messenger. iMessage touts an all-inclusive (text, photos, videos, meta-info like contacts) messaging platform by which any two iOS 5 users can chat and trade files securely, over WiFi or 3G. Advanced features like read receipts, live typing indicators, etc. Tight integration with notifications, and non-invasive pop-in of incoming messages. Multi-tasking friendly. We knew this was bound to happen, but will it be enough to catch the eye of those users sticking to BlackBerry mainly for the use of BBM?

Will this new messaging platform send you off into the abyss of Apple?, or, is a Apple messaging platform not enough to pull you from your RIM podium?

Reports from comScore show that a 42% percent of Canadians are BlackBerry Smartphone owners. That's a pretty impressive lead to say the least. Coming in second behind BlackBerry is Apple, sitting at 31%. I think it's great to see Canadians supporting RIM, a home grown company headquartered in Waterloo, Ontario. Now only if RIM can pull ahead in the US Market in the same way with the release of the PlayBook and a great lineup of upcoming devices. Are you a Canadian BlackBerry user? Let us know in the Forum!

BlackBerry seeing competition within US government

*In above photo: Herman Cain, Presidential Candidate 2012 w/BlackBerry Bold 9000

Reports coming in that the US Government is taking a shift away from BlackBerry devices. According to a Washington Post article published yesterday, agencies within the federal government are moving away from BlackBerry devices, and allowing government employees to use their own preferred methods of communication. Also, BlackBerrys at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory has dropped from 1,000 to 700 in the past year.

We should have seen this coming when Barak Obama became a traitor to BlackBerry when he started using the iPad. It's a conspiracy against RIM to wipe out all BlackBerry devices by the end of his term in office.

What is the solution? Vote for Presidential candidate Herman Cain in the 2012 election. He is not only a huge BlackBerry fan, he sports an old school Bold 9000 - how cool is that!?

Have a look, fresh images of the Bold 9790 have hit your screen today! There have been a lot of rumors of a Onyx device and whether RIM would market this smaller Bold touchscreen. It now looks as though that may become reality as these images show a rather recent prototype of the device running OS 7. What do you think about the 9790 (Onyx?)?

BlackBerry news from India heats up as Indian telecom operator, Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL), has launched a alternative to BlackBerry services last Friday. The service, Bharat Berry, takes the stage as a less expensive and more accessible replacement option for those BlackBerry users who are under the threat of BlackBerry services being cut off by the India government. Features of the service include:

    • Works with all compatible Mobile phones
    • Works with your Corporate mail, Gmail and your personal email accounts
    • Has all data and communication functionalities you are used to
    • Provides over the air (OTA) Contact and Calendar backup
    • Is an India-compliant solution

This means that the Bharat Berry service will allow users to have their emails pushed to their device, as well as on the go synchronization of calendar and contacts for multiple mail accounts. The service has been "tested on several entry-level handsets," according to Dr Ajay Data, director, Bharat Berry Technologies.

Executive Director (Wireless Services), MTNL, AK Bhargava said:

BharatBerry is an Indian compliant Product made by Bharat Berry technologies in India keeping in consideration all necessary India laws; the necessary approval from all respective agencies have been received before launching this service for Delhi GSM subscribers. While the services offered by other providers are handset-based, Bharat Berry service can run on any Java-enabled normal GPRS-enabled handset like Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, LG, Blackberry, HTC, etc and ensures that you remain connected to your email, calendar and contacts through the servers hosted in India.
The cost of the Bharat Berry monthly subscription rate will be Rs 80 (about $1.77) to use along with any standard data plan.
