Yes, you read that right. Research in Motion is wrapped up in yet another lawsuit. This time over emoticons, yes, emoticons. Varia Holdings LLC filed a suit claiming RIM is infringing US Patent 7167731 - "Emoticon Input Method and Apparatus". With this suit, Varia Holdings LLC is demanding that sales of all BlackBerry devices ceases immediately and that the company be awarded damages.

The PlayBook was officially the first BlackBerry device to ever be jailbroken when a tool called Dingleberry came around. Because of it, many people have wondered what RIM's stance on it is. In a post to the Inside BlackBerry for Business Blog, Adrian Stone, Director of the BlackBerry Security Incident Response Team (BBSIRT) at Research In Motion, explains the cons of jailbreaking your PlayBook. The biggie being that it actually void your warranty with the manufacturer.
To be clear, RIM recommends against installing any jailbreaking tool. Customers who use a jailbreaking tool on BlackBerry products void the manufacturer warranty and also increase the long-term risk of negatively impacting the stability and user experience of their BlackBerry products. Use of a jailbreaking tool could also amplify the impact and severity of a future security issue, making your personal data more vulnerable to theft and more difficult to protect. If new jailbreaks for BlackBerry products are reported, rest assured that we will evaluate them and take appropriate action to help protect customers.”
Stone also goes onto explain what measures RIM takes when a new hack is published. Interesting to note though that since the 2.0 update we haven't heard anything about Dingleberry, the PlayBook's jailbreaking tool.

Since BlackBerry 10 will be heavily influenced on what we have in front of us as PlayBooks, it's no surprise the RIM would want to address this as quickly as possible. BlackBerry 10 devices will probably be jailbreakable too if they can't figure out a way to prevent it before they are released. Only time will tell.

Since its release, RIM has shown the BlackBerry PlayBook as the only true professional tablet. This claim has just received another positive feature which BlackBerry lovers can now boast about. The App World Enterprise Solution on the PlayBook brings a simple way for users to access approved and mandated apps that are managed by their internal IT department.

There's obviously a huge growing trend in the enterprise world that is focusing more on mobile apps, and the need and opportunity to make these tools available to employees is something RIM is focusing on with the release of this added feature in App World.

RIM has been removed from its top spot in its home market by its rival Apple. This marks the first time that Apple has ousted BlackBerry as the top smartphone in Canada. According to the bloomberg news Canada's love affair with BlackBerry may be over. This is actually a significant concern for the BlackBerry maker RIM as their home based in Waterloo has always provided a loyal customer base.

A data report provided by Bloomberg show and IDC shows that 2.08 million BlackBerry's were shipped last year in Canada compared to 2.85 million units for Apple's iPhone. The numbers compared to 2008 are quite staggering as RIM outsold Apple almost 5 to 1.

    Declining Sales

There has been concerns about RIM's U.S market slipping, but to see it slipping in the mother land is never a good thing. Sales in both U.S. and Canada fell significantly over the past year, and have been struggling to catch up ever since. Even RIM's worldwide sales have started to slip away.

Most analyst predict that RIM will report a fourth-quarter loss when they announce their results next week. With stocks at an all time low RIM has to do something.

    A Steady Bounce Back

Instead of small device spurts throughout the year RIM needs to deliver at least one device that will leave consumers wanting more. The time is ripe for RIM to make a move, as Apple released an new iPad and iPhone that really weren't that much different from previous generations. However it seems as though we wont be seeing that kind of device from RIM until the fall.

All hope still is not lost for BlackBerry as it still has a very strong presence in Latin America, the Middle East and South East Asia. There are still quite a few loyal BlackBerry users, but RIM still has to make sure to cater to their needs plus the needs of new consumers.

The time is ripe for RIM to catch up with its competitors, and BlackBerry 10 may just be that device that consumers simply can't resist.

The app that many thought wasn't going to make it to BlackBerry smartphones, now officially has. The MLB At Bat 12 app is now available to BlackBerry smartphone users. If you are a die hard baseball fan, you will know how great of an app this is. The pricey tag of $14.99 might turn some users off, but others find it well worth it. The app is only available for BlackBerry smartphones right now, which means no love for the PlayBook yet. That's definitely surprising to me at least. I, for one, happen to prefer to buy apps on the PlayBook over my BlackBerry. Hopefully we'll see a nice PlayBook version in the future.

After many BlackBerry users in the UK were disappointed to find that BBM Music v1.1 would not be available to them, many (okay, all) will be happy to know that with the v1.2 upgrade, BBM Music will add availability to Beta Zone members in the UK. Another perk of this update would be that the BBM Music has gotten a face lift! These are the features you'll find in the updated beta app:
    • Invitation requests - view songs and friends in common before accepting or declining a request
    • "Favorite" songs and contacts - let everyone know which songs and people you enjoy most
    • Intelligent shuffle - shuffle songs based on songs, genre, artist, song popularity, album, contact, release year or recently added
    • Default friend - new users will have a default friend listed under their contacts
    • Applications enhancements - current users will notice notification, start up performance, and accessing account information improvement

For now v1.2 is only an eligible program in Beta Zone (only for US, Canada, and UK users), but the fact that the beta app is now capable of use in the UK is a good sign that the official version following this one will inevitably bring many new UK users to the BBM Music world. If you're itching to try this beta app, just remember that you have to currently have a BBM Music subscription to actually use the app, if you don't, sign up today! With a pretty new look and the addition of my fellow BlackBerry users across the Atlantic, BBM Music gets even better as the days go on.

There have been rumors circulating that there would be another BlackBerry Curve model coming out, but it they never really made it mainstream. Interestingly this new model the Curve 9320, has stayed relatively quiet on the internet. The Curve series have been one of RIM's most popular devices series.

One of the interesting things about this entry-level BlackBerry is that it is shown having a dedicated BBM button. As far as what's under the hood, there wont be any surprises here as it is said to have some pretty basic hardware. The QVGA non touchscreen and 512 MB of RAM, along with a 3.2MP camera make up the guts of this model.

Despite its low specifications the 9320 does bring us a couple nice features like the dedicated BBM button and a strategically placed microSD slot that allows for hot swapping. It would be nice to see a dedicated BBM button on future devices from RIM

Launch date and pricing are unknown at this time, but it is said that we could see this device released within the next few weeks. If you are looking for a starter BlackBerry device it would be worth checking this one out, as for the power users this ones not for you.

Living deep in the heart of Texas, there's one thing that we can never plan for: the weather. Needless to say, dressing to accommodate the weather ...is impossible. And I'm not even exaggerating. Because of this, I am always needing to stay to date with the current weather situation. For example, I've been sitting in the library and had no idea that there was a tornado nearby. How nearby? I don't know yet. Good thing I have my trusty BeWeather app! It is by far the best weather app I have ever had the pleasure of downloading on my BlackBerry and I use it dozens of time a day on average.

My trusty BeWeather app was fortunately updated earlier today to v2.6.17 and includes a fix with issues regarding background auto-updates. If you need a reliable weather app, I highly recommend BeWeather! To add to the excitement, the paid version (normally $9.99) is FREE right now, compliments of BlackBerry. Sure you can get the original BeWeather Free, but I would hop on over to App World and download the complimentary BeWeather now!

They told us before that the app would available mid-March and low and behold they have delivered. This becomes another huge title for the RIM to have secured for their PlayBook OS so make sure you check it out today!

I was originally going to be writing this article an hour ago, when I first downloaded Sketch With Friends. Then I actually started playing it and let's just say that's where my last hour has been spent. Sketch With Friends is a new game similar to that other fruit's game "Draw Something."

The objective of the game is to try to guess correctly what other people are drawing. The faster you guess, the more points you score. When it's your turn to draw the roles are reversed. The quicker someone guesses correctly what you drew, the more points you get. After 10 rounds the winner is chosen.

I originally didn't know if it would be worth the $1.99 price tag but after the first game, I was convinced it definitely is. Sketch With Friends is a cross-platform game that pins you against Apple and Android users, as well PlayBook owners and that also brought an extra cool factor.

Right now, BlackBerry PlayBook users are pretty much dominating this game and hopefully that is evidence to other cross-platform devs that we are worthy of the investment. Make sure you check this game out!

Our good friend Kathryn Lahrs, from Lahrs Apps, just let us know about a new app she's been working on and has gotten into App World. Garble is a pretty cool message encrypting app that allows you to share your messages with friends and family in a cool secretive way.

This app is definitely geared towards a younger audience but that doesn't stop it from actually being super solid in functionality. The fact that it's cross-platform will also make it an enticing app for many so make sure to check it out.

    Official description:
Do you want to have some extra fun with your text messages? Do you want to keep your messages a secret from your parents, teachers, friends, boyfriend/girlfriend, etc.? Do you want to create a unique garbled message for each of your friends?

This, and more, is possible with Garble! Send Garbled text messages to any of your contacts. Garble is available on BlackBerry, and other phones so no contact is left out. Your messages are kept on your phone only; no data is sent to a server or saved anywhere except your phone.

Even your friends who do not have the Garble app can use the free Garble Reader app to read your garbled messages. Customize your garbles, select which contacts can garble with you and so much more.
