No, that's not an app that you see above. Although it may not look like what you were expecting, that's actually a screenshot of Twitter's mobile site on BlackBerry. Pretty cool right?

Twitter has had this HTML5 site up for a little bit but I found it interesting that not a lot of people know how well it actually works. Now, personally, I wouldn't replace the Twitter for BlackBerry app with the mobile site permanently as it still lacks certain functions of an app (notifications, shortcuts; etc), but if you're not a hardcore Twitter user and just feel like logging in once in a while, it's possible the mobile site may be your best bet.

The Twitter mobile site has a lot of the same functionality as the Twitter for BlackBerry app. The interface is extremely fluid and responsive and, depending on your data connection, it's pretty fast as well. Unfortunately it does lack certain features. For example, you can't see who's retweeted/followed you in the Connect tab, which I found really interesting since this is possible on the desktop site.

The Twitter mobile site on the PlayBook is in essence the same with the layout being slightly different to accommodate a larger screen. The same fluidity and smoothness applies and for someone that doesn't necessarily want to buy a Twitter client app on the PlayBook, the mobile site can be incredibly useful.

I'm very happy that Twitter has made this mobile site available as it brings another alternative for mobile users of any platform to use their services. HTML5 is here and it's here to stay for quite some time. We're lucky that our devices are great and our future BB10 devices are going to be amazing at rendering HTML5 content. That's a huge plus for BlackBerry and something we ought to be proud of. Not everyone can say the same.

It seems like it's an everyday occurrence that the BlackBerry maker RIM, is under fire from the media. The excitement over BlackBerry World has been trumped by recent talks of layoffs and the departure of more top RIM executives. The media are often quick to exaggerate news regarding RIM, and sometimes just plain inaccurate in their reports regarding the company. Every now and then its appropriate to set the facts straight.

    The Real Deal

It would be a bit naive to think that RIM has not had its fair share of issues, and over the past year has given BlackBerry users and investors a wild ride. The truth is, RIM is not doing very well now. Sometimes the facts are hard to swallow for BlackBerry fans, but the fact of the matter is that there are some serious issues that RIM is going through now.

RIM's stock has declined over 75% over the past year, and are down more than 90% of it's all time high in 2008. Yes, this is something that we have been hearing non stop over that past year, but until it improves we wont stop hearing about it. Before the holidays RIM's stock traded for $11 that is a far cry from $147 its all-time high in 2008.

A massive surplus of mobile devices isn't helping the company either. We already heard from RIM about their $485 million dollar PlayBook inventory hit in December, and their $267 million BlackBerry inventory expense in January. That is quite a few BlackBerry devices not being sold. Since then the value of RIM's current BlackBerry and Tablet device inventory have grown more than 18% and has an inventory value of more than $1 billion, according to data complied by Bloomberg. In short this is not good. No company wants to be in the positions of having a surplus of their product.

    RIM's Hope

A large part or RIM's future will be determined by the success of its upcoming BB 10 device. Most consumers are just waiting to get their hands on RIM's new BB 10 devices, but they will have to wait until later this year. Late last year RIM decided to delay the release of their BB 10 super phones. Critics have expressed concerns as to whether or not RIM's current OS 7 devices will hold up consumer interest until then.

The bottom line is that BB 10 is extremely important to RIM's success. It's not just a hit or a miss, it has to be a grand-slam. It has to deliver and it has to "wow". RIM's recent BB 10 Alpha device has already shown some signs of some exciting things to come. BB 10's rich UI and unprecedented functionality is already getting may excited and is helping to spark new interest in RIM's smartphones. One thing we do know for certain from RIM is that BB 10 will be like nothing we have ever seen before.

Although the BBOS Mobile Site Launcher has been available via OTA for some time now, as of today you can now download the Mobile Launcher app via BlackBerry App World! We've decided that since we have already released the BBOS PlayBook App in App World, that it would be fitting to go ahead and make the Mobile Site Launcher available in App World as well. The BBOS Mobile Launcher app is FREE to download, and available for BlackBerry smartphones running OS 4.2 and higher. Which means pretty much any device going back to the 83xx series. So get your BBOS on, and download now!

The U.S. Dept of Defense has officially approved all BlackBerry 7 devices. This comes to no surprise as we recently reported that a half a million federal workers, including the President, are still glued to their BlackBerry devices. Also, the United Kingdom, and the land down under, Australia, approved BlackBerry 7 devices in the last couple weeks as well. Perhaps all this hype lately is tied to the fact that BlackBerry 10 is coming soon, and those who thought they may want to change their government device to the iPhone or Android are finally coming to whits end again. Are you a government worker with a BlackBerry?

Dax Shepard, from one of my favorite comedies, Idiocracy, is the star in the latest video from the BlackBerry Challenge Council. In this hilariously funny video, Dax takes on the BlackBerry Bold 9900 browser in a variety of "feats" to see who has the "speed."

Check out a few details about Dax Shepard on Wikipedia, and also get more info on this BlackBerry Wiki-Game challenge at the BB Challenge Council webpage. You'll have to submit your email in order to get into the challenge contest. Good luck, be sure to let us know how you did!

Instant messaging has become the norm for mobile users. It seems as though texting, instant messaging and email have almost replaced the phone call. BBM has long been the a strong point for RIM, and has proven to be popular among today's youth. Despite its popularity some question its ability to maintain its position as the instant-messaging, due to RIM's recent struggle.

With over 55 million users worldwide BBM is clearly the preferred instant-messaging client, but that has not stopped the competition from moving in on this reach new market. Apple, Samsung, and third party vendors have all jumped on the opportunity to cater to consumers instant messaging fix. Apples iMessage has been slowly gaining popularity among its iPhone users while WhatApp Messenger has been gaining popularity across all platforms.

So what plans does RIM have for BBM? For starters its does plan on making it a part of its next generation BB 10 platform. But what about the competition? Can we expect BBM to run on other platforms in the near future? The answer to the latter may be a solid no.

According to the Wall Street Journal RIM had plans to license out its proprietary network before now CEO Thorsten Heins, came on board. A project formed by former Co-CEO's Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie, code-name " SMS 2.0" would open up RIM's network to other smartphone makers. SMS 2.0 would license BBM as a service to these other smartphone makers, and allow RIM to make a profit off of licensing fees and support. RIM even acquired the popular messaging company called LiveProfile. However, the project was quickly squashed when newly appointed CEO Thorsten Heins decided that the company should not go with any licensing deals.

BBM is an important part of the BlackBerry brand, and is one of the things that separates it from other smartphones. RIM will need to concentrate on perfecting the BBM application on its BB 10 line of devices. Consumers will be expecting a BBM client that runs just as smooth as their current BlackBerry device.

As we know, targeting emerging markets are one of RIM's top priorities. Making sure that BlackBerry's presence remains in these markets will also be helped by the launch of these two extra economical devices.

Packed with OS 7.1 out of the box, the BlackBerry Curve will surely make a lot of people happy for a relatively low price.

As soon as carriers start announcing dates and price details we will be sure to pass them on to you guys!
