The BlackBerry Developers Blog has posted six new smartphone simulators for download today. These simulators help app developers work their magic as ways of testing previous to release. I know many of the great devs we have on the BlackBerry platform are going to be ecstatic about this news. Most of us wont have a use for this simulators though but rest assured they are extremely helpful.

Some good news to our fellow BB fans out there in Cambodia, as RIM has just launched the BlackBerry OS 7 Smartphones after a very long wait. Another country will start enjoying a whole new operating system for BlackBerry devices as they will now experience this awesome creation by RIM. The BlackBerry Bold 9900, BlackBerry Bold 9790, BlackBerry Curve 9360 and BlackBerry Curve 9380 will be available in their local BlackBerry shops and BlackBerry authorized partners.

“We’re pleased to bring these four new BlackBerry 7 smartphones to customers in Cambodia,” said Nicholas Horton, Managing Director, Indochina at Research In Motion. “The BlackBerry solution offers an industry leading mobile communications experience that customers love and we think they will be thrilled by the faster performance enhanced browsing, richer multimedia and localized support delivered by the powerful new BlackBerry Bold and BlackBerry Curve smartphones.”

For the past couple of months, we have been hearing great reviews and comments with this new OS 7, especially with its highly recommended faster web browsing experience. I can certainly say that the users will be satisfied with what it can offer based on my own experience as a BlackBerry Bold 9900 user. A lot of changes and many enhancements have been made in BlackBerry 7 which they will be able to try, as this new OS is packed with pre-installed apps and integrated functionality.

Some very good news to all BlackBerry fans out there in India as RIM just marked down the prices of some of their smartphones by up to 26%. Sounds great right? According from RIM, they decided to have this discounted price not entirely because they want to be on top again, but rather, to expand the markets across the globe.

This strategy is a very simple yet an effective way of providing great experience to everyone in India. They have noticed a lot of consumers are younger, so they wanted to make sure that all of them will be able to try and be satisfied with what BlackBerry smartphones can offer. Reducing the price is indeed a risk RIM has to take just to keep up and be available to everybody as much as possible.
"RIM as a brand has moved from just an enterprise device to as a more consumer device. Be it our services or the product, we have seen a strong uptake by the youth and therefore, to get the devices into more hands, we are cutting the prices," RIM India Managing Director Sunil Dutt said.
These smartphones are the BlackBerry Curve 8520, Curve 9360, Curve 9380 and Torch 9860. All four handsets were earlier available for Rs 10, 990 Rs 19, 990 Rs 18, 990 and Rs 29, 990 respectively but they can now be purchased by up to 26% so you can enjoy the BlackBerry experience.

Moreover, Dutt mentioned that RIM aims to further uplift the presence and leverage the demand for BlackBerry smartphones.
"The focus is not just on reducing prices, but we want to address a larger number of people and give them the overall experience of BlackBerry. We will continue to focus on bringing locally relevant products, services and applications to Indian consumers," he said.
Even the BlackBerry PlayBook started to be sold at a lower price in December of last year that gave 21% market share in India. It was launched at Rs 27, 990 but can now be purchased for only Rs 13, 990 which is almost more than half of the price.

If they have done that in India, I am pretty sure that there will come a time RIM will follow suit in other countries, such as Canada, U.S., and other Third World Countries. Looking forward to what RIM can offer in the future. This would only mean that RIM is now reaching the hearts of all consumers by cutting down the prices, but still the same top of the line quality to be able to provide the best smartphone experience to everyone across the nation.

Would you want this price reduction in your country? I do!

Research In Motion continues its push with the Be Bold campaign by now adding a big giveaway for existing BlackBerry users. As we know, many current BlackBerry owners with OS 5 and OS 6 devices are choosing to leave BlackBerry for a taste of the iPhone or Android at the time of their upgrade.

It seems with this latest promotion, RIM is trying to retain their current users and getting as many of them as possible on the BlackBerry 7 OS. To help out, BlackBerry is giving away 70 new BlackBerry Bold 9900; one a day until May 31st.

To enter, simply scan the barcode or add the PIN 28ED1A72 to your BBM contacts and when you get accepted, you will be automatically entered.

As a new Bold 9900 owner, I can honestly say now, this is the best BlackBerry ever made. It's simply amazing and if you are lucky enough to get picked you will agree once you try it out.

I've always been a strong supporter of providing tools/hardware for development prior to actually launching a product. With all the upcoming hype for BlackBerry 10, one would assume that RIM wants to make this a success.

During BlackBerry 10 Jam in Orlando (May 1st-3rd, 2012), RIM will release the first beta of the BlackBerry 10 Developer Tools! These toolsets will include:

    • BlackBerry® 10 Native SDK
    • BlackBerry® 10 WebWorks™ SDK
    • BlackBerry® 10 SDK for Adobe® Air®
    • BlackBerry® 10 SDK for Android™ apps

Toolsets are great, but what about how BlackBerry 10 will interact with hardware? Well, RIM has also announced that BlackBerry 10 Jam attendees will also be receiving a BlackBerry 10 prototype device!

Not only will developer attendees get access to the BlackBerry 10 Developer Tools, but they’ll also be receiving a limited edition developer prototype device – the BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha™. This is not a BlackBerry 10 smartphone – it is a prototype running a modified version of the PlayBook OS which will help developers design their apps for the BlackBerry 10 smartphone form factor. Just to be 100% clear – it’s not the final hardware or OS for BlackBerry 10 – it’s a device to help developers get started with designing for what’s coming. BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha is only for developers – not end users – and is only available to developer attendees at BlackBerry 10 Jam.
Note: The BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha will not be running a final version of BlackBerry 10, but rather a modified version of the PlayBook OS.

Yes, you read that right. Research in Motion is wrapped up in yet another lawsuit. This time over emoticons, yes, emoticons. Varia Holdings LLC filed a suit claiming RIM is infringing US Patent 7167731 - "Emoticon Input Method and Apparatus". With this suit, Varia Holdings LLC is demanding that sales of all BlackBerry devices ceases immediately and that the company be awarded damages.

The PlayBook was officially the first BlackBerry device to ever be jailbroken when a tool called Dingleberry came around. Because of it, many people have wondered what RIM's stance on it is. In a post to the Inside BlackBerry for Business Blog, Adrian Stone, Director of the BlackBerry Security Incident Response Team (BBSIRT) at Research In Motion, explains the cons of jailbreaking your PlayBook. The biggie being that it actually void your warranty with the manufacturer.
To be clear, RIM recommends against installing any jailbreaking tool. Customers who use a jailbreaking tool on BlackBerry products void the manufacturer warranty and also increase the long-term risk of negatively impacting the stability and user experience of their BlackBerry products. Use of a jailbreaking tool could also amplify the impact and severity of a future security issue, making your personal data more vulnerable to theft and more difficult to protect. If new jailbreaks for BlackBerry products are reported, rest assured that we will evaluate them and take appropriate action to help protect customers.”
Stone also goes onto explain what measures RIM takes when a new hack is published. Interesting to note though that since the 2.0 update we haven't heard anything about Dingleberry, the PlayBook's jailbreaking tool.

Since BlackBerry 10 will be heavily influenced on what we have in front of us as PlayBooks, it's no surprise the RIM would want to address this as quickly as possible. BlackBerry 10 devices will probably be jailbreakable too if they can't figure out a way to prevent it before they are released. Only time will tell.

There have been rumors circulating that there would be another BlackBerry Curve model coming out, but it they never really made it mainstream. Interestingly this new model the Curve 9320, has stayed relatively quiet on the internet. The Curve series have been one of RIM's most popular devices series.

One of the interesting things about this entry-level BlackBerry is that it is shown having a dedicated BBM button. As far as what's under the hood, there wont be any surprises here as it is said to have some pretty basic hardware. The QVGA non touchscreen and 512 MB of RAM, along with a 3.2MP camera make up the guts of this model.

Despite its low specifications the 9320 does bring us a couple nice features like the dedicated BBM button and a strategically placed microSD slot that allows for hot swapping. It would be nice to see a dedicated BBM button on future devices from RIM

Launch date and pricing are unknown at this time, but it is said that we could see this device released within the next few weeks. If you are looking for a starter BlackBerry device it would be worth checking this one out, as for the power users this ones not for you.

Its been a busy day for Beta Zone members. RIM has now released BBM version 6.2.0.15. RIM is always tweaking its popular messaging program, and just when you thought they could not possible add anything more they always surprise us. Be sure to head on over to the Beta Zone to get this update.

Here are the new features and enhancements for BlackBerry Messenger 6.2:

Animated display pictures - More animated display pictures are now built into BBM. Change your picture to suit your mood.

Change your name or message inline - You can quickly change your name or status message without leaving your contact list by clicking the text at the top of the screen. To exit inline editing, just scroll down.
You can still access your profile screen by clicking your display picture.

Streamlined voice notes - When your convenience key set to open BBM, if you highlight a contact in BBM and press the convenience key, you can start recording a voice note. Once you're done, pressing the
convenience key again will send the voice note. Group chats. You can return to the default
    color at any time.

BlackBerry Tag enhancements - Adding contacts has never been easier. If your BlackBerry smartphone supports NFC technology, you can turn on the Allow Automatic Invitations by Tapping option. Then, as
long as you or someone else has BBM open, you can add each other as contacts by
aligning the backs of your smartphones.

This feature requires that you both have the latest version of BBM installed on
    smartphones that support NFC technology.

Resend a message - If a message didn't send (for example, if your smartphone was outside of a wireless
coverage area), you can highlight the message and select Resend from the menu.

Search - When typing the name of a contact or group, the search ignores special characters and
emoticons to make it easier to find what you're looking for.

A few weeks back we introduced the "Blame RIM Phenomenon." The idea behind this "phenomenon" is that due to either lack of communication, explanation, or plain and simple user ignorance, RIM ends up getting blamed for certain problems that are not entirely their fault. In Part I, we discussed apps and how it's up to the developers of these apps to bring them to different OSes and platforms. This article will focus on how carriers decisions can negatively affect how RIM is perceived at times as well.
