New 7" And 10" PlayBook Dropping This Year?

It was only a matter of time before speculation would arise as to what new devices RIM would push out this year. We already new that RIM would be releasing new devices this year, and we know that at least one of them will be a BlackBerry 10 device. RIM has been keeping its new BlackBerry 10 devices on the down-low and so far has done a pretty good job of keeping it that way.

New reports have come in to the folks over at n4bb that suggest that RIM will be releasing another variant of its current 7" tablet that will have 3G+ capabilities. This tablet is supposed to be released in April of this year. The 10" version of the PlayBook is also rumored to be released sometime in December. Now, we did get information that RIM was indeed working on a 10" PlayBook, and that it would be released sometime this year. However, the rumored date of December may be a bit lengthy, and an earlier date is more probable at this point.

In addition to the two new PlayBooks, information has as surfaced regarding a few other new things from RIM. These things include Mobile Fusion releasing in April, PlayBook Admin Service in the Summer, and two new BlackBerry Curves with an exclusive release to the East Asia and Africa markets. One of the curves is suspected to be 2G only. The PlayBook OS 2.0 is also speculated to be released at the end of February. Last, but not least RIM's next generation super phone, BlackBerry 10 is speculated to have been pushed back to September and to only have one release.

    Here is a brief summary:
    • 10″ PlayBook releasing in December 2012, LTE enabled
    • 7″ PlayBook releasing in April 2012, 3G+
    • First BlackBerry 10 phone releasing in September 2012
    • PlayBook OS 2.0 releasing end of February 2012
    • Mobile Fusion releasing in April 2012
    • PlayBook Admin Service releasing in Summer 2012
    • Two new Curves for East Asia and Africa markets. One Curve will be 2G only.
Not much in regards to releases, and frankly it makes you wonder if this would even be enough. RIM has been feeling the pressure from investors and consumers after a bad year. What do you think? Is this too little too late? How many Blackberry 10 devices would it take to satisfy our thirst for a superior product?

Visa Inc. and Visa Europe have announced that the BlackBerry Bold 9900, BlackBerry Bold 9790, BlackBerry Curve 9380 and BlackBerry Curve 9360 have been added to the list of Visa compliant payment products available for commercial deployment by financial institutions. These devices have been certified with Visa payWave, Visa’s mobile application for payments at the point-of-sale.

RIM has been a leader in developing NFC technology and is committed to working with key partners to build a strong ecosystem to lead the next generation of payment methods. RIM’s key NFC developments are highlighted below:
    • The latest BlackBerry 7.1 OS update, announced yesterday, incorporates BlackBerry Tag. By simply tapping their NFC enabled BlackBerry smartphone against another NFC enabled BlackBerry smartphone, users can make sharing documents, contact information, photos and other multimedia content easier than ever.
    • The BlackBerry Bold 9900 and BlackBerry Curve 9360 are the first SIM-based NFC smartphones to be certified by MasterCard as PayPass-approved devices.
    • HID Global, trusted leader in solutions for the delivery of secure identity, announced in September 2011 an industry first with plans to support the company’s iCLASS digital keys and mobile secure identity on NFC-enabled BlackBerry smartphones.

Verizon Now Pushing Official OS 7.1.0.163 Update To Bold 9930 & Torch 9850 Users

We reported that Verizon would soon be releasing OS 7.1.0.163 to subscribers. Today that day has come, as many Bold 9930 and Torch 9850 users, including myself, have already gotten our notifications to update our devices via OTA. Remember, if you don't want to wait for the release, you can always download the Sprint version of 7.1 in our site Downloads Center. It's the same version 7.1.0.163 Verizon is releasing today. Just don't forget to delete the vendor xml file before installing on your Verizon smartphone. Also, a note to Verizon subscribers: you will have to pay a $20/month fee if you want to use the mobile hotspot feature, and NFC capability has not yet been enabled either by Verizon. I would highly recommend you call your local Verizon support and make a complaint about the $20/month mobile hotspot surcharge.

CES 2012: BlackBerry PlayBook Tablet OS 2.0 Video Walkthrough

CES 2012 is in full effect in Las Vegas and BlackBerry is making their presence felt. With the big announcements yesterday of BlackBerry 7.1, and BBM 6.1; the preview of the BlackBerry PlayBook Tablet OS 2.0 was the next thing on the agenda for BlackBerry. Today Inside BlackBerry has posted a new video highlighting these great features.

The messages app has a great look and seems pretty easy to use. It brings something new and fresh while at the same time having the BlackBerry email reliability that we're all use to. The fact that it's integrated with social media just makes it that much cooler. Same can be said for the calendar and contacts apps as well. The tight integration between apps is something we've seen more and more in our BlackBerry smartphones but that has been missing from our PlayBooks. This is apparently being addressed in 2.0.

I've been called a BlackBerry fanboy because I get excited about the smallest little new features that others may not think are so great, but honestly this is pretty awesome. Yes, these are features that should've been implemented on the PlayBook since the beginning but can we please let that go and focus on what is here now?

Now it's RIM's time to make sure this OS gets polished and shipped out in time to inject a little credibility in the time frame they've put out for their future devices and products. Keep the momentum going RIM.

Earlier today news surfaced after Research in Motion's senior director of business development, Marty Mallick, was quoted saying “...there will be touch BB10 devices as well as QWERTY BB10 devices. Both of those will exist.”

While this still leaves much to the imagination in regards to which smartphones will be included, it's a relief to know that I will continue to have access to a full QWERTY keyboarded phone after the release of BlackBerry 10. He also stated that the devices could possibly have the screen resolution enjoyed by PlayBook owners, but they will for sure share the same aspect ratio.

Verizon Confirms Global Ready Curve 9370 Launching In-Store On Jan 19th

Remember back in June of 2011 when a Verizon CMO confirmed that three BlackBerry 7 devices would be hitting the Verizon shelves in 2011? Well, while it wasn't three to become available in 2011, we did get two out of three, the Bold 9930 and Torch 9850. And as of today, about a week after the new year, Verizon has announced that the global ready Curve 9370 will be coming to Verizon Wireless stores on Jan 19th. Oh yeah, let's also not forget about that rumor back in Nov of 2011 that the Verizon Curve 9370 was suppose to launch on Nov 17, 2011. Now that Verizon has a BlackBerry 7 Curve series device, will you be getting one?

BBM 6.1.0.49 Now Available In App World

Its been a busy day for the folks over at RIM. BBM 6.1 has been released from beta testing and is now available for download from App World. BBM 6.1 provides a wealth of new features that provide even more functionality and entertainment. BBM is way ahead of the competition when it comes to instant messaging. Personally I love the animated avatars!

Take a look at some of the new features included in BBM 6.1 (taken from Beta release Blog):
    • Animated avatars – We’ve added a new dimension to the options on your BBM display picture – animated avatars! These avatars use controlled animation, which means that motion is activated when you scroll over the avatar. Three animated avatars are available as part of this beta as a sneak peek (including a “smile,” “laughter” and “in love”). We’re planning to add a larger selection of animated avatars after the beta trial is completed. You can access these avatars when changing your display picture within the Avatars folder. (Note: Animated avatars are only supported on BlackBerry smartphone OS 5.0 and higher.

    • 12 new emoticons – A picture is worth a thousand words, or so the saying goes. With the addition of 12 fun emoticons in your BBM catalog, there are now more ways for you to express yourself and personalize messages to your friends. These new emoticons were created based on suggestions from customers participating in beta trials – look for more to come in future releases. And please make sure to leave us a comment and let us know what other emoticons you’d like to see. We’re listening!

    • Increased character count for personal messages – Whether it’s keeping your contacts posted on your whereabouts or sharing your mood for the day, you can now say more in your regular updates to your BBM friends. We’ve more than doubled the size of your personal message space to 160 characters, so that you can now share your trials and tribulations in much greater detail.

    • Colored chat bubbles – BBM users can now customize the color of chat bubbles for contacts. With 10 colors to choose from, you can pre-assign colors to your contacts by simply going into your BBM contacts’ profile and selecting a desired contact chat color. This feature is great for organizing the many BBM contacts you have and makes it easier to recognize types of conversations (I’m assigning colors to work, friends, and family. My boss is blue, my family is yellow, and colleagues and friends will get their own color-coding, too.)

    • Camera/Display Picture Integration – Now you’ll be able to snap a picture and display it right away! There are now fewer steps between taking that great picture with your BlackBerry smartphone and making it your BBM Display Picture. Now you can update your BBM avatar right from the BlackBerry smartphone camera app by selecting “Set as BBM Display Picture” from the menu options.

Is it a full moon tonight somewhere? AT&T has released a OS update for a BlackBerry device. If that's not strange enough, it's for the BlackBerry Torch 2 9810. I must say I was overjoyed to see this until I noticed the build. AT&T decided to go with .583 even though a .585 had been leaked online already. Nevertheless, it's always better to have an official build so if you have a Torch 2, download it, install it on your PC, delete the vendor.xml file (if you're not on AT&T), install it on your device, and let us know what you tihnk!

BlackBerry 10 To Be Shown Off At Mobile World Congress

The most recent news that the BlackBerry community has gotten wind of was that Research in Motion has plans to show off the new BlackBerry 10 operating system at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain from February 27th through March 1st.

A spokesperson at RIM has stated:
"2012 will be the year of BlackBerry 10 so we'll be showcasing the capabilities of our future operating system as well demonstrating the power of BlackBerry 7, with a particular focus on NFC and BBM connected apps. Research in Motion will be there in force."

While this doesn't necessarily mean that the actual phones will be set up to be played with, having official details on how the new OS will work is a definite plus. That may hold off the riots for a little while longer. On top of the reveal of BB10, BB7 seems to be another popular aspect of RIM's revival plan. I'm curious about the new operating system, sure, but those phones could be a long way out. I'm more excited to see how much more I can get out of my BlackBerry Bold 9900. Research in Motion says this is "The year of BlackBerry 10", but the year is young, and we've got a long way to go. Hopefully their determination stays strong and continues for a long time down the road.
