With BlackBerry World 2011 behind us, we have taken a moment to reflect back on some good news that we missed last week. One demo worthy of showing is Poynt's integration of BlackBerry push services to their BB smartphone via PlayBook. With push services being one of the hottest items about BlackBerry, Poynt does a great job at utilizing this feature. In the above video, Peter Werry from Poynt, gives a walk-through of how their app works with push and other innovative uses of BlackBerry services. Poynt is a free app that you can download from their site or BlackBerry App World.

Are you a Poynt user? Leave us feedback on how the app works for you.

Research In Motion keeps showing love to OS 5 devices. For the last two months, the beta version of Facebook for BlackBerry v2.0 was only available for OS 6 devices. Yesterday, we seen the launch of version 2.0.0.19 that brought a new homescreen icon & support for OS 5.

Some of the other updated features & tweaks include:

    • Facebook Chat Enhancements: While chatting with your friends, you will now know when they’re typing a message by the visual cue of “is typing a message”. As well, you can filter your Online Contacts to quickly find a specific friend and start a Chat message.

    • View Mutual Friends and Friends List: The ability to view Mutual Friends and Friends List is available from the Info tab on Profiles. With the new Mutual Friends feature, you can discover which of your friends you and another user have in common. And now you can also view a user’s Friends List from their Profile (dependent on Privacy Settings of the user).

    • Enhanced Integration with BlackBerry Native Apps: Facebook v2.0 is even more integrated with BlackBerry smartphone native apps than ever. You can now click on PINs, Phone Numbers, and email addresses displayed in Wall posts, messages or the Info tab, and either perform the respective action (e.g., place a call) or save the information to your BlackBerry Contacts application.

I'm a huge social media lover & always like to keep myself updated on what my friends are doing & what's going on in the world. When I first got my BlackBerry in May of last year, the first application that I downloaded was Twitter For BlackBerry. At the time, I didn't know better & was mesmerized by it. Over the following months, I slowly learnt of other options, such as Blaq, HootSuite & SocialScope, which all brought new features & a more friendly UI.

Well, today I am please to announce that RIM has finally launched Twitter for BlackBerry v2.0 in BlackBerry Beta Zone!

This new version brings many new tweaks to the UI & new features, including:

    • Redesigned Nav Bar
The Nav Bar has a whole new look with simplified icons that provide a cleaner layout and a more familiar Twitter experience. With a single click, you can quickly access your Home Timeline, @Mentions, Messages, Lists, perform a search from the new Single Search Screen, or submit a tweet with the new “Compose Tweet” button accessible from anywhere in the app.

    • New Compose Tweet Button
The new “Compose Tweet” button in Twitter for BlackBerry smartphones 2.0 is a single touch-point for creating new tweets from anywhere in the app, making it easier than ever to share your location (if setting is enabled) and photos with your followers.

    • Single Search Screen
With the new Single Search Screen in Twitter for BlackBerry smartphones 2.0, you can search for tweets, tweets nearby, people, as well as go-to @users all from a single location. From the new Single Search Screen, you can also view Trending Topics and Saved Searches – unifying the entire Twitter Search experience.

Another great feature for BlackBerry 6 users: Twitter Search works with Universal Search on your BlackBerry smartphone. Search for anything, and Universal Search will pull in relevant results from your entire BlackBerry smartphone, including all Search categories within Twitter.

    • External Notifications
A new application header notifies you when you receive other types of messages, like BBM messages or email, as well as displaying your network connectivity while in the Twitter for BlackBerry smartphones app – meaning you no longer need to leave the application in order to discover the types of new external notifications you have.

    • New Black/Chrome Color Scheme
The color scheme throughout the app has been updated to be consistent with the look of the Twitter brand.

While we wait on RIM to approve the native email app aMail from third party developer AiFlex, we have a chance to see one of the most anticipated demos of BlackBerry World 2011. Keynote attendees got a sneak peek of the upcoming Native email and PIM (Personal Information Management) for the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. These PIM applications (including Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, MemoPad and, of course, Email) will come to BlackBerry PlayBook tablets via an update to the BlackBerry Tablet OS later this summer. Andrew Bocking, VP Handheld Software Product Management, gives us a video demo of the Email and Contacts applications. Be sure to take a look and post a comment to let us know what you think!

RIM announced at BlackBerry World that they would be working hard with software developers Rovio to get Angry Birds on the PlayBook. I am seriously excited about this. We already posted about users being able to play the an Angry Birds flash game from their PlayBook's browser, now this is the real deal. No word of the release date, though I'm sure they won't keep us waiting.

The video above is with Ryan Bidan, senior product manager for the PlayBook, who gave Engadget a hands-on demo of BlackBerry Messenger on the PlayBook. It's not a native app - which means you'll need the PlayBook to be paired with a BlackBerry smartphone via BlackBerry Bridge. The BBM update for PlayBook was announced yesterday and is being pushed out to users - along with a Bridge update on the handset side. We imagine a stand alone version of BBM for PlayBook will be available in the future, but for now, this should hold off all of us BBMers out there.

Today at BlackBerry World 2011, Engadget got a hold of a demo of Android apps running natively on the BlackBerry PlayBook. Android's menu and home buttons are emulated using the standard PlayBook gestures, and the back button is replaced with an on-screen softkey. When the Android Player becomes available for the PlayBook, users will be able to download Android apps from BB App World. Also in the news of Android apps, the mobile device hit, Angry Birds, was announced to become available for the PlayBook as a native game - no strings attached!

With the release of OS 6.0.0.546 for the Torch 9800 being released by Vodafone today, the files have been extracted and now give BB users the ability to download the Twitter update v1.1.0.24 via OTA! No changelog comes with the extraction, but make sure to leave us a comment on any findings or fixes you notice.

Note: This update is for OS 6 ONLY!

One of the main reasons I stay with my BlackBerry is for the flagship messaging app, BlackBerry Messenger. Over the last few months, many developers have created multi-platform applications similar to BBM, but that work with Android, Windows Phone 7, iOS & BlackBerry. We've seen applications like Kik be banned from App World by RIM & I was scared that the newest hype, LiveProfile, was going to suffer the same fate when their downloads were abruptly stopped last week.

Well, my fears were taken away yesterday when I found out that LiveProfile was actually updating it's application on all platforms to deal with the surge of new users. Their official announcement is below:

Over the past few days LiveProfile has been experiencing record breaking growth. In just one single day 400,000+ new users joined LiveProfile. This kind of growth is not very common and hard to scale. For this reason, we would like to apologize for the recent outages and stability issues you may have encountered.

We have identified and fixed a major bottleneck which was causing problems with message delivery speed, loading friend lists, and generally unstable service. This is not a good first impression by any means and we have worked hard through the weekend to ensure this issue was resolved and will not occur again. We encourage you to come back and try LiveProfile once more and promise you won’t be disappointed! If you need to re-download you can do so by visiting LiveProfile - Stay Connected from your mobile browser.

We would also like to clear up the crazy rumors circulating that LiveProfile is a virus. This is far from the truth and we are a reputable New York City-based company trying to change the world through real-time mobile communication. Read more about this topic from our blog:LiveProfile

The LiveProfile team is now working on some new and exciting features that people have requested and we expect to release them shortly. Keep an eye on our website or Twitter for the latest info.

Another official announcement from RIM... this time it's a Video Chat application for the PlayBook! In all honesty, I think this should have been on the PlayBook from day one-given it's high video recording resolution.

Key features of the PlayBook Video Chat application include:

    • One-Click Video and Voice over Wi-Fi Calls - with just one click users can make a call from their Video Chat contact list, log of recent calls or simply by entering the BBID email address of the person they want to call.
    • Incoming Call Notifications - users will receive a notification pop-up when a new video call comes in, allowing them to accept the call as either a video or voice call, or decline the call. For those quiet moments - such as when while watching a movie or playing a game -users will also have the ability to simply set the "Do Not Disturb" option and the BlackBerry PlayBook will automatically ignore all incoming calls.
    • Powerful In-Call Functions - by using the picture-in-picture function users can easily preview their own video image prior to placing the call in order to see what will be displayed on the other end. They can also easily switch cameras from front to rear so their friends can see what they are seeing, and for private moments users can mute/unmute audio or make or take calls using voice only.
    • Friends List - BlackBerry PlayBook Video Chat comes complete with a Friends List for maintaining your favorite contacts. A picture can easily be added to a contact to personalize the entry and a Call Log makes it simple to keep track of received and missed calls.

The down side (well sort of) - you'll have to wait till tomorrow to download. I know it's hard to wait for it, but it will most certainly be worth it!
