    If you've opened up App World today you may have noticed a new featured selection labeled "A Thank You Gift." Yep, RIM is prepping App World for the free app frenzy to take place tomorrow for all BlackBerry users. These apps will be available to download until the end of 2011 so that will give you plenty of time to get your app on. What's the catch? Depending on your device, some of the free premium apps will not be available to you. Of course this is normal as one wouldn't expect to run N.O.V.A. by Gamloft on the old clunky 8300. Yesterday we reported a evolving list of apps that will be included in the gift pack, amongst one month free of tech support for Enterprise users.

    • Get your signature keys before doing any porting or development - developer.blackberry.com
    • Brief overview of the package manager UI
    • Shows Android Player on Playbook

    The ever popular social app foursquare has been updated to version 3.3. There are actually a few new things to point out with this release. The biggest part of this update appears to be the addition of a notification tray that keeps track of the notifications within the app. Here are some of the notifications you will find within the new tray:

    • a friend comments on one of your check-ins;
    • there are new comments or photos on a check-in you’ve commented on;
    • your friend does one of the Tips you’ve left;
    • you and a friend both have the same place on your To-Do List;
    • there’s a special deal at a place on your To-Do List;
    • a place you’re at starts swarming;
    • one of your Facebook friends joins foursquare (worlds colliding!); and,
    • you’re ousted as Mayor (boo!).
    In addition to the notification tray, a few other updates have come as well. Here is the list:
    • You’ll find better setting and account management, so you’ll be able to manage your privacy settings, password, and 3rd party apps – (this one’s for BlackBerry OS 5 and up).
    • We’ve made tons of improvements to GPS and location support.
    • Lots of other small tweaks and fixes!
    Happy updating! You can download it here:

    We all know the past week was a nightmare for some people in regards to their BlackBerry service. I too was among the ones that experienced this disruption. I believe RIM was working very hard to fix the issues, as its not easy to fix a complex global network like the one RIM has. As you probably know by now RIM has some very angry customers right now, and many were wondering what RIM would do to compensate the users affected by the outage.

    Directly load code modules (apps, themes, hybrid OS) and create direct-install (JAD) and desktop-install (ALX) package files. You can use the FishLoader utility to:

    - create bundles of apps* that can be re-installed in a single step without using a computer,
    - re-install archived apps where the .jad and .alx are missing,
    - directly install (without using a computer) an app package that only has a desktop-install (.alx) file,
    - install loose .cod files without having to create an install package,
    - replace damaged or missing app modules, without risking accidentally overwriting other data.

    Looks like its a good day for Beta Zone members. Earlier today the Beta Zone released version 2.0.0.42 for Ticketmaster. Now they have released version 3.0.1.20 update for BlackBerry App World. Seems as though there are quite a few important issues that have been addressed along with a few performance and speed enhancements. The Beta Zone is very important for the development of solid robust apps for BlackBerry devices. It allows for applications to be tested by us as consumers before they go mainstream. This way we can let the developers know of any bugs or issues that come up when using the app. If you do not have a Beta Zone account head on over to the Beta Zone website and get one.

    A list of the important fixed issues are as follows:

    • Performance and speed enhancements across all BlackBerry devices
    • Multiple translation/localization errors
    • Multiple instances of UI lag
    • Apps not appearing in “My World” for some users
    • User continuously notified to update the same applications when on the latest version
    • Memory leak occurring and taking up too much device memory
    • Null pointer exception during downloads
    • Escaping out of viewing app description returns user to top of installed/uninstalled list – App World should not go back to the top of list but return to the previously viewed app in the list
    • Error when opening and closing some apps with the error message: "Uncaught Exception;Attempt to delete a field that doesn't belong to the manager”
    • Unable to upgrade "Try and Buy" app after installing App World 3.0
    • “OutOfMemoryError” when attempting to launch App World
    • No "reinstall" button available for Facebook / BB Bridge / etc in App World after deletion
    • The “Reboot” option is available in the menu of AppWorld 2.1.x.x and it does not show in AppWorld 3.0.0.x

    A few weeks ago we were excited to report that the Citrix Receiver for the BlackBerry PlayBook was available. Since then there have been a few updates most notably the 0.9.1 update that added support for SSL/TLS connections. This one not so exciting, but it does fix issues that caused the application to hang or fail to launch.

    Here is whats new in version 0.9.2:

    -Fixes for issues that caused the application to hang or fail to launch.

    It was only time until RIM decided to make NFC within the BlackBerry 7 devices something useful. During a keynote presentation at the GITEX conference in Dubai, Jim Balsillie unveilled BlackBerry Tag.

    BlackBerry® Tag, which will be incorporated in the next BlackBerry® 7 OS update*, will allow users to share contact information, documents, URLs, photos and other multimedia content by simply tapping their BlackBerry smartphones together. BlackBerry Tag will also enable friends to instantly add one another as contacts on BBM™ (BlackBerry® Messenger).

    BlackBerry Tag takes advantage of Near Field Communications (NFC) technology included in the recently launched BlackBerry® Bold™ 9900/9930 and BlackBerry® Curve™ 9350/9360/9370 smartphones, and these are the first BlackBerry smartphones that will support BlackBerry Tag.

    * Subject to network operator certifications. Check with your local operator for availability.
    This is certainly a great way to incorporate NFC usage into a users daily routine.
