The legal battles never seem to cease for the BlackBerry maker RIM. Last month the company had to change the name of its future phone from BBX to BB10, and this time it looks as though the term BBM may be in danger of being removed. It seems as though everyone is after RIM these days.

Executives at the Tronto based broadcast industry group BBM Canada, are saying that the trademark BBM belongs to them. The company started in 1944 as a group of broadcasters, has had several names over the years. Some to include: Bureau of Broadcast Management, BBM Bureau of Measurement and now BBM Canada. It also uses bbm.ca as its website and has used the letters BBM in its logo for more than sixty years the group also owns the trademarks in both the U.S. and Canada.

In a statement to the press, president and chief executive officer of BBM Canada Jim MacLeod, stated the following: “We want our name back, I find it kind of amazing that this wouldn’t have been thought about before they decided to use the name. The same thing goes for BBX.” he also stated that “We don’t want to pile on the troubles of RIM – this predates RIM’s troubles – but from our point of view, this is a very serious situation, If the big guy who can throw the most money at it can take your trademark, why do you even have trademark law?” A court proceeding against RIM has launched after attempts to negotiate failed. This means that the BBM name as we know it may be changed.

RIM started its campaign for the name BBM back in 2010. According to the Canadian Intellectual Property Office they advised RIM in a letter in Febuary of 2010 that the trademark "was not registerable". Apparently someone in RIM's trademark department inst paying attention. First BBX now BBM, come on. Whats going on here? We will be watching this one very closely. I cant imagine not calling BlackBerry messenger BBM.

RIM sure knows how to throw a party. Last night in NYC, RIM went all out in the BBM Ugly Sweater Event and TwistMyMind and yours truly were lucky enough to attend. As it would turn out the night was a complete success for RIM and everyone that was there.

The main focus of the night were the 30 winners of the #BBMUglySweater contest on Twitter whom each received an AT&T BlackBerry Bold 9900 and a pretty cool gift bag as the grand prize. The gift bag included a BBM Music shirt, BlackBerry winter gloves and a couple other BlackBerry goodies. RIM also set up an open bar for all the guests and attendees to enjoy as well as different kinds of hors d'oeuvres through out the night, which were delicious.

As I was sitting, minding my own business on this lovely evening, I got an urgent BBM/email from AgentBlackBerry and TwistMyMind to immediately post about the app, BBM Music, being updated to version 1.1.0.12. They're currently at BlackBerry's BBM Ugly Sweater Event in New York City, so those of us that are nerding it up at home get to write stories up! There hasn't been much information on what has been updated in this version, so please post a reply in the forums to let BBOS know!

If you're new to BBM Music, this is what you can expect: Each month you can switch out up to 25 (of your 50) songs to freshen up your listening habits. The songs you have listened to can also be cached to your SD card to allow access to all your songs even when you're offline and can't connect to your wireless network. Even better: free trial for a whole month! After that, access to BBM Music will cost you only $5 per month. That's 10 cents per song if you never swap them out, and roughly seven cents if you swap out 25. I'm not sure where else you can pay that little for music right on your BlackBerry, which means one thing.. Go download BBM Music now!
    • Step One: Download BBM Music from the App World.
    • Step Two: Create your very own music profile and pick 50 of your favorite songs from millions up for grabs.
    • Step Three: Add your friends! Invite your fellow BBM buddies and gain access to their 50 songs as well. The more friends you have on BBM Music means the more songs you can listen to.
    • Step Four: Start listening. Grab some earphones or play through the speakers to allow everyone to enjoy and bring on the music.
If this sounds like the app for you, head over to BlackBerry App World and download (or update) now!

You have read correctly. The incredibly popular game by Rovio, Angry Birds, is now available for a BlackBerry device, the PlayBook. No need to have the OS 2.0 beta installed or the need to run it through the Android App Player, the 3 versions of Angry Birds out now are available for the PlayBook in App World. The price of $4.99 might be high for some but the fact that these versions have no ads should help calm the masses.

If you like Angry Birds make sure you go pick it up in App World. Buy at least one version so we can show all these developers that BlackBerry users will pay for quality apps and we are a worthy investment.

When I updated to OS 7.1 on my Bold 9900, I lost one of my must-have apps, SocialScope. If you don't know what SocialScope is, it's probably the most elusive & exclusive Twitter/Facebook client for BlackBerry.

Today, an OTA update was released that finally made SocialScope compatible with the many OS 7.1 devices that are now out there in the world of BlackBerry devices.

If you switched to UberSocial or T4BB, will you be returning to SocialScope?

While I won't receive my precious BlackBerry PlayBook for a few more, long, painful, lonely days.. Okay my point, RIM as released Facebook for PlayBook v2.1 this morning which includes many aspects that many people were hoping for as soon as possible. Some fun new changes include:
    • The addition of Facebook Groups - Be able to post comments, see members and all around interact without having to switch to Facebook on the web (which I'm personally very excited about, I hated having to do that)
    • Improved photo and video access - Uploading either has become much easier and figuring out how is more obvious
Interact with friends and more on Facebook for PlayBook with all the fun of doing so on your BlackBerry, but with a bigger screen! Remember, if the update isn't immediately available to you, just give it a few hours, this app is hot off the press!

When I woke up this morning with the little option to upgrade Foursquare I could not have been more excited. I had had my fair share of mishaps and what not with the app, but it looks like most of them have finally been resolved. Version 3.5 of Foursquare includes these fixes:
    • Now you can create or discover lists of things to do nearby or places to explore
    • See your friends' check-ins with "in-line" photos
    • Many devices will receive improved connection support
    • Updated GPS logic
If you haven't ever heard of Foursquare, it allows you to explore the world around you by enabling you the chance to meet up with friends, find new places to go and save money on random specials posted by other Foursquare users! While on the go, you can easily share with your friends where you are, post pictures that they can comment on as well as insider tips and reviews that you wouldn't otherwise been inclined to hear about. You earn points and badges for going to your favorite places. Plus, you can post all your activity to Facebook and Twitter! Sound like the app for you?

The bug which prevented users from adding a new tablet to the BlackBerry Bridge has apparently been fixed with this new version. The small update from 1.0.7.4 to 1.0.7.5 might not necessarily indicate a new PlayBook Tablet OS but it'd be a nice present right before the holidays for us.

While I have not yet been lucky enough to get this recent Twitter for BlackBerry update, one of the other BBOS bloggers pointed me in the direction so those that are having to wait like me are well aware that the update is coming for you! If you're a Curve or Pearl user, you may have been unable to access a Twitter users profile page from the Mentions tab, but that has changed! This version's change log has stated that this fix as been added and you will finally be able to. While App World may not be showing the recent update for you just yet, please be patient and know that it will be shortly!

Research In Motion is apparently feeling very generous with its BBM Music users this holiday season. RIM is extending the BBM Music trial to anyone that has downloaded the app between December 16th, 2011 to January 4th, 2012 to 4 months. Also, RIM has let us know they will be extending current users to an extra four months as well. For some, this will make it an extended trial of 6 total months total.

Unfortunately, there will definitely be some unhappy users that have already upgraded to a premium account not knowing RIM would be offering this extended trial. How this offer will affect them is not really clear but odds are they will be on the outside looking in.
