And another one bites the dust. The visual voice-mail company YouMail has decided to part ways with BlackBerry. YouMail was recently updated to version 2.7.8 with many improvements to including the ability to ditch callers, new faster UI, and even completely removed ads from within the app. However despite, all of these improvements and bug fixes CEO Alex Quilici stated the release was "bittersweet", and that they were suspending doing and further work on the BlackBerry app.

The reasoning behind this decision was that lack of BlackBerry users using the app. YouMail is listed among the top ten app in the productivity section of BlackBerry App World. Still, Quilici mentioned that his company has seen a steady decline with BlackBerry users over the past year. According to Quilici those users have moved to other mobile platforms like the iPhone and Android.

YouMail has been a popular app among BlackBerry users. However, its exodus from BlackBerry leaves some concerns regarding the user base for BlackBerry apps. RIM has been actively interacting with developers over the past year to expand the native applications for its line of BlackBerry devices, and to provide to them the necessary tools to create high quality apps. Still, will there be enough interest in BB10?

In the long-run the user base dictates whether or not a company will invest in making apps for a device. RIM may see an increase in independent developers, but what about larger development firms that have multiple apps? Will they see enough financial interest to move or keep developing for BlackBerry devices?

The good news is that events like BB JAM, will help RIM with developer relations and interest. RIM's upcoming BlackBerry World 2012 is coming up soon and it will be interesting to hear what some of the keynote speakers have to say about the current state of BlackBerry. This is going to be a pivotal year for RIM and its user base, and one can only hope that they will remain faithful to BlackBerry.

    • Search view not rendered properly switching from portrait to landscape
    • Avatars in swipe-down menu are larger than intended
    • Links within DMs are no longer clickable
    • Tweet card showing under search list
    • Mini-browser appears above options

As I've said before, I like Twitter and I'm on it a lot. On BlackBerry, we have some pretty great Twitter clients to choose from (I still believe Twitter for BlackBerry is the best) and a new one has just burst onto the scene.

Kijamii, by The Jared Company, is possibly the simplest, cleanest Twitter app I've ever seen. Some have said it's a little too simple or boring and while I can't exactly disagree, I do believe this app has great potential for a target audience that simply wants a basic Twitter app.

Kijamii may have a simple look but it does have every main function of Twitter (including one that a lot of us on Twitter for BlackBerry would love to have), the ability to see which of your tweets has been retweeted. I personally enjoyed my time using Kijamii thanks to the simpleness of it, lack of ads, and overall fast response

Cons: Lack of push made mentions come in very late (same as my biggest complaint with SocialScope). Also, Since there are a lot of options to choose from, and no tabs, it does take longer than I would personally like to go between Mentions/Tweets/Timeline/My Profile.

Another amazing game is now available for download in the App World made by Union, is called Frisbee Forever. I first started to play this app on my brother’s iPod Touch and I must say that this is really awesome and very addictive. I am glad that PlayBook owners will now be able to experience the fun and excitement of playing as well.

There is a level for everyone so you can enjoy the thrill and the breathtaking experience of twisting and turning in a California Theme Park, or experience the waves in the Pirate filled Caribbean oceans and the snowy Winter Wonderland. Collect different kinds of Frisbee, challenge yourselves in achieving trophies and bonuses, and be the Frisbee Master!

BlackBerry Messenger has gotten more competition this morning as Samsung has officially released their ChatOn Messaging app on BlackBerry. BlackBerry becomes the third supported operating system supported by ChatOn (Android and iOS being the first two) and is currently only available for download OTA (not in App World).

The app itself is pretty cool. It's definitely not a BBM killer but it is very stable and does the job as intended. How it will function in terms of battery life, memory management; etc is still yet to be seen but it is very apparent that Samsung does see BlackBerry users as relevant when it comes to messaging. If you do try ChatOn let us know how you like it!

BlackBerry Messenger is without a doubt the most popular app in our ecosystem. We check BBMs, Group messages, status updates; etc, hundreds, if not thousands, of times a day. Many of us have been dealing with BBM for such a long time that we know the in and outs of this great app.

Some new BlackBerry owners, or users that simply don't use it as much (they do exist), BBM could get a little confusing. Well this evening RIM has put out an excellent video called BlackBerry Messenger Basics, which, as the title describes, explains BBM in a simple and compact way. This video will be extremely helpful for a long time for many people so thank you RIM for putting it out!

Most of us may know/have heard of Gist because of the PlayBook's new Contacts app in OS 2.0, but they are also a fairly popular app on BlackBerry smartphones as well. Gist for BlackBerry enables you to access all of your contacts in one place and see updates for each contact from various sources including email, social networks and other online content.

Their app has been updated, it's been a little while, and is now available in App World. Below are more details from Gist's Blog about what's new with this release:

    Overall Account Performance & Reliability

The Gist for BlackBerry app received major performance and reliability improvements this release. You will notice a significant increase in speed and reliability upon the initial load of contacts from various sources (Contacts app, Calendar app, email, Twitter, and Facebook) and pulling all of their social information and news from the web.

We now pull new contacts from your social accounts into Gist more often. So you will see a new Facebook friend or someone you’ve followed on Twitter appear faster in your Gist account.

The “Get the Gist” option from the Contacts and Calendar apps is not only faster, but also more reliable. The app is also much faster when navigating the tabs within a contact profile.

    New Features

The “Get the Gist” feature now works on contact groups in the BlackBerry Contacts app. Simply open the Contacts app on your BlackBerry, highlight the group, press the BlackBerry menu button on your device and select “Get the Gist”. The Gist app will open displaying the list of people in your contact group. From here you can easily navigate profile information and social updates to learn more about the people in your group.

    Bug Fixes

We received many requests from our users for more detailed messages within the app. We have added these messages in this release. You will now be prompted to sign in, check your internet connection and such, instead of receiving a generic error message.

    What’s Next?

Now that we are caught up on bug fixes, we will begin working on additional Gist for BlackBerry features! Stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks and please suggest a feature here!

BBM Music has been updated to version 1.2.0.16. Not much in regards to a change log, but there are some key issue that you should be aware of. BBM Music has come along way since its initial release and we have seen some great progress from RIM on this application.

The following is a list of issues that appear in BBM Music version 1.2.0.16 application:

    • “No Results found for Recommended” message displayed at bottom of recommended songs in catalog list
    • Blank error message displayed on attempt to upgrade after an initial failure and battery pull
    • “See Playlist” remains in the middle of the list of songs when the list is expanded
    • Application launches before registration is complete when launched from ‘extended search’

You can head on over to the Beta Zone to download this application.

We already saw the new Facebook v3.0.0.15 update roll out earlier today with a new BBM connectivity feature. RIM has also let us know that more popular BlackBerry apps will be updated to include BBM connectivity. Some of the latest updates and features for users include:

Facebook and Twitter: Automatically share your Facebook status or latest Tweet with your BBM friends right from within the app.
BlackBerry Travel: Share your travel plans and flight changes directly with select BBM contacts or with your entire BBM community.
BlackBerry App World: Easily update your BBM profile to let friends know about the great new app you’ve just downloaded on BlackBerry App World.
BBM Music: Recommend friends right from within the BBM Music app itself, making it easier for you to connect and expand your music collection.

Updates have also been made to BBM itself, including a new selection of animated avatars, a simpler way of updating one’s personal message in their profile, and the ability for users to quickly send voice notes.

Check out the press release for complete details on the updates. We'll keep you updated on the moment more updates start rolling out. If you happen to notice a update before we do, post it in the comments!

One of the best social networking sites has finally been released out of Beta Zone. Facebook for BlackBerry version 3.0.0.15 is now available in the App World for everyone. BlackBerry users will definitely appreciate and will surely enjoy the improvements of this new version.

New features of Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones 3.0 include:
    • BBM Connected App Integration where you can share your FB status to your BBM contacts right within the app
    • New Facebook Publisher, Share with BBM Contact
    • UI Discoverability Improvements
    • Improved Facebook Notifications
    • User-Friendly Error Messages

When Facebook 3.0 was released to Beta Zone members only, some did not appreciate the changes due to issues like duplicate posts and others. However, not all of the changes are negative and I do believe that's the reason why it is now out for everyone in App World. So head over the App World and try this new Facebook 3.0 and do not forget to share "what's on your mind".

Now that the capability of animated avatars has been with the BBM platform for some time now, why haven't you uploaded your own yet? Whatever the reason, adding a animated avatar has just gotten more exiting and easier with a couple apps now being offered in App World. With Avatar Animator for BBM and Create Animated BBM Avatar, you'll be on your way to creating that customized avatar you have never been able to capture. While the functionality is limited, with a bit of improvement, these apps will be on their way to creating beyond a distorted shaky picture avy. Give them a try, and be sure to post your own animated avatar creation in the comments!

    • Clicking the trackpad in the inline display name or personal message field opens the "My Profile" screen for right-to-left languages.

Head on over to the Beta Zone and update to version 6.2.0.40.
