Since the BBX OS was first announced at Devcon Americas back in Oct there has been a lot of hype as to what the new design of the BBX Superphone will look like. So far there has been two possible codenamed devices, the London and Colt, but nothing as far as a visual until last week when a picture of the BlackBerry London was leaked online. Keep in mind that this picture has not been confirmed by RIM, yet there have been a few sites claiming that their own "unconfirmed" sources have "confirmed" the picture as legit... figure that one out. But does the recently leaked picture of the London really depict what we have heard about the upcoming BBX device so far, and how it will look? I happen to believe the BBX-like phone design in the above pic will be closer to the final product, and here is why...
Alec Saunders, RIM’s vice president of Developer Relations and Ecosystem Development, went on the record with PCMag.com and told them, "Look, if you build [an app] for the PlayBook, then it will run on BBX. We have maintained aspect ratios, BBX also has the ability to upload multiple dimension graphics … [and the standard resolutions] are the same as PlayBook."
Ok, well maybe the resolution of the device in the leaked London photo may be the same as the PlayBook, but what about the design? "Got Bezel" anyone? That's right, perhaps RIM should change the codename to the "Surfboard," instead of the "London," as I could Hang Ten on the Humunga Kowabunga from Down Unda on that device. And while many people are split as to whether they approve or not, I'm hoping that RIM will ease back on the oblong look and opt for a more sleekish and practical device style as seen in the recently leaked Enterprising Minds videos. All we really want in the end for a full touchscreen device is more screen real estate and a better OS, right?
Another reason to be skeptical of the leaked picture is because back in January RIM CEO, Mike Lazaridis, when asked about what the then unnamed QNX-based phone OS would look like, he held up a PlayBook and said, "like this." I can't imagine when Lazaridis was thinking about a device to be modeled after the PlayBook, that his inspiration was the long-board.
As I come down off of this rant, as much as I would hate to admit, I can't help to think that perhaps there is some truth to the leaked photo. I could even see an entire lineup of prototypes created by RIM as they try and innovate away from the classic BlackBerry Bold style look. Maybe there is another prototype that lays hidden within RIM headquarters that is based upon the leaked BB London photo and the device seen in the Enterprising Minds video, and if they ever got married they could make a beautiful baby (see below)...
