First, you can get a free unlock code from here. http://www.blackberryosunlock.com/
They are a straight forward company and I got my unlock code in about an hour, but they say that it could take 24 hrs.
Once you get the code, let us know and we'll get you the rest of the information to get your device unlocked.

I would choose the option 2 procedure just so that I could watch a Bold 9930/9900 transform in to a Torch 9850/9860....

Also, if I may add, when upgrading or downgrading the BlackBerry OS of an unlocked device, it will not affect the BlackBerry device unlocked status whatsoever, but I highly recommend users to enable SIM lock security.

When another user inserts their SIM card into your unlocked device, a pop up message will appear to enter the PIN code (not unlocked code), so you or another user may use their SIM card on the same BlackBerry device.

To find this feature, go to Options>Device>Advanced System Settings>SIM Card, press the BlackBerry key, scroll to Enable Security, now press, you will see a pop up message [Enter PIN Code (3 left)] (see screen shot).

Please note, to obtain the SIM card's "default" PIN code, you must contact your mobile carrier, and they will tell you the code at no cost to you.

    Thank you.

However, if do not plan on using another carriers service, go out of town/country for fun or business, there is no reason to unlock your device. Unless of course you're like most of us and like messing with your device to try to get the most out of it.

    Unlocking Blackberry Bold 9900 / 9930 Pros / Cons

Unlocking your Blackberry bold 9900 / 9930 will make your Blackberry available for use with carriers other then the original carrier that sold your Blackberry Bold 9900 / 9930.

    Pros:
    - it's very simple to unlock a Blackberry Bold 9900 / 9930 and it can be done remotely
    - There are instant unlocking services that can provide you with unlock codes in minutes.
    - You will be able to use your Blackberry with SIM cards from many GSM carriers.
    - Your Blackberry will stay unlocked if you will wipe it or reinstall your Blackberry OS, only needed to be unlocked once.
    - It's good for people who want to travel and use sim cards from many carriers, very easy and saves you some money.
    - It's cheap to instantly unlock a Blackberry Bold 9900 / 9930 from any carrier.

    Cons:
    - When a SIM card is switched to another carrier you will need to update the service books for the data use.
    - On the Verizon Bold 9930 you should dial ##000000 to change the phone number, on Sprint devices another unlocking of the CDMA screen is needed.

Getting your Blackberry Bold 9900 / 9930 unlocked is a must if you want to use it with multiple carriers.
It's very easy and can be done by a 12 years old child.

So I tried the site yesterday, entered the info and it said we no longer send email with the free. Tried today enter the same info and it said error imei already in our database. Entered the info in the tracking page and it displayed my unlocking code. Followed the instruction and unlocked my BB9930. Only one thing I put a t-mobile sim in but had to change the network setting to 2g 3g before it would find t-mobile. Great when I get some leftover in a prepaid card I will donate. freemyblackberryDOTcom thanks much.

There are some other professional unlocking website like unlock2go[.]com which support most the Blackberry models. I had already used their service and I am so happy to avail their service.
