I got my tour the 20th of July and now my trackball is acting up again, here comes 2nd 30 day exchange :-( .
Just like most processors everything is assigned a priority and the trackball is very low. So as more apps, themes and what not are installed the lower the priority ranking the processor gives it. RIM was to address that with .42 but apparently that had way to many bugs so they scrapped it from what I heard.
coworkers trackball now works half the time only, replacing. This is very annoying.

Didnt want to read through all the posts, so if someone has already posted this, sorry to repeat.
The trackball issue is not a software issue. RIM and VZW have recognized it as a hardware issue, and addressed it very quickly. My Tour was one of the first to hit a FedEx truck (Got up at 3:30a to place my order cuz i couldnt pre-order) and I have had 0 issues with hardware. The SOP for the issue though, is to first increase sensitivity, and then if the issue does not solve itself a replacement under the warranty or WFG would be needed.
I only noticed a software issue.
On my second tour now from the trackball problem. Sprint exchanged mine after the 30 day exchange period on the 1 year RIM warranty. Had a new one the next day and after about a week in have had not any issues yet. (Side note, also noticed that there is a thin cushin stuck to the inside back cover right where it sits on the battery. An obvious factory fix for the loose battery cover).
To address the previous post, I have read so many threads on the argument whether the trackball is a software or hardware issue. Some people are so convinced that they "know" where the problem lies. (Not necessarily pointing fingers at you, Fuzzie...) I have been told by Sprint that it is a software issue. However, being that neither I, not anyone else on these other forums seem to be an engineer at RIM or a developer of the hardware of software of the Tour, really makes me question their qualifications to make such a determination. I can make a guess, but it seems to me this shouldn't be such a big fuss. The fact is that it is obviously a problem and whether it is hardware or software, hopefully RIM will own up and resolve it quickly. None of us knows what it is for sure. If they did, they should be able to come up with a homebrew fix.
Let's focus on what matters.

No prob. I happen to be in a position that is behind the scenes. The information I gave, was simply to advise those waiting for a software update as opposed to getting an exchange with new equipment a heads up. I may have the "position" but I'm a consumer too, and wouldn't want anyone to have to deal with a problem like that.
Software issues are resolved on the handset by either a soft or hard reset, or software load. If that doesnt fix it, then it is a hardware issue.
Hope that helps a little with where i was coming from with my post.

What's a shame fuzzy, whatever the issue is, is that VZW gives you major crap for trying to swap out the phone due to the trackball. I have had 3 tours all with trackball issues and VZW tech 3 claims this is a software issue. The bottom line hardware or software is somewhat irrelevant to me, the issue I have is once again why must the consumer get screwed with buying equipment that should have working in the first place. And then on top of that to have to grovel on your hands and knees to get one is just bad customer service.
It is no wonder I see more and more of my friends and biz colleagues switching to the iPhone. You would think after the disaster with the Storm, RIM would have got the picture.
Bullshit. I'm on Tour #4. My first 3 had trackballs that worked perfectly (it's only thing that worked perfectly, LOL). With Tour #4 horizontal scrolling is very unresponsive. Setting it at "80" works well enough for basic navigation, but still sucks for selecting text and editing. "90" and "100" are too fast to be usable. I don't consider it to be a big enough problem, though, to try my luck with a 5th Tour. If it were truly a bug in the OS, the trackball should have been just as bad on my first 3 Tours. RIM is in denial.

...sigh.
Directly from my RIM rep
“There were an initial number of devices with a trackball issue. This was repaired and related to a supplier problem. Sprint is aware and any of these devices can be swapped at a Sprint service and repair center.”

First of hello everyone, first post. My Tour's trackballs does have certain days where it acts worse then others, but for the most part it is ok.

I replaced my 2nd phone because of the trackball. Its a bit better. The issue is hardware.
I agree some days are worse than other, but that to me is the worsts. I seem like a tease not enough to make you run down to the sprint store. Or even take a extra long lunch to get an replacement not a refurbished. This puts me in a position that stinks because I work six days a week. The software on my Tour is updated next is better software or better hardware.

I'm pretty sure you can call Sprint customer service and asked to be forward to a Blackberry Representative. Tell them the problem and they should be able to overnight you a new phone with a pre labeled box to return your old one. I've done that in the past with other phones.
