Have you tried the battery pull? With the phone on, pull the battery and go get something to drink. But the battery back in and turn it on. This is a usual first step when our BlackBerry start acting up.

So at this point your phone is just showing a blinking red light? Are you trying to connect it to your computer?

Try this, making sure that your phone is plugged into your computer first before your start. But first try backing up your 9800 if possible.

    1) Make sure you have Blackberry Desktop Manager installed.
BlackBerry - Desktop Software - US
    2) On your PC, go to Start > Run and copy and paste the following line exactly (meaning with the quotation marks):

    "c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader\loader.exe" /nojvm

    3) The Application Loader Wizard will appear -- click "Next."
    4) In the "Connection:" drop-down menu, you should see "USB-PIN: UNKNOWN". Click the "Next" button.
    5) You should then see a list of applications ready to be installed for your Blackberry. Hit Next and Finish and you are well on your way to getting your Blackberry back to life. Congrats! Just don't disconnect anything and let the lengthy process finish completely.

NOTE: If you do not see a list of applications mentioned in step 5 and instead see the message "The Blackberry Desktop Software does not have Blackberry Device Software for the device that you have connected to the computer. Contact your wireless service provider or system administrator," then you must download Blackberry's Operating System for your carrier and device.

Just select the appropriate carrier and network type, select your Blackberry model from the list and download the latest version. Install this download and follow the above steps again and you should be on the right path.

You can try using BlackBerry Swiss Army Knife to wipe your device. Try that and see if it recognizes your phone.

I've seen a few 9800s that behave like this. The key instruction most tutorials on how to recover a nuked berry leave out, is when you plug it in to recover, you only get a half of a second to click on next before the app loader or bbsak says it cant find the device. The kids at JMU call me the Miracle Worker since I've fixed BlackBerry phones that were declared "total" losses or hardware failures by carriers and the local repair shop. Being quick on the click is probably all that is needed.

Now that it is showing the "os not installed" error, you should be able to hook up to the desktop manager and install the os, or run the apploader to install the os.
