Thread: RIM Announces Severe Battery Draining Issue on 9800 Torch

This is some very late info that has been released by RIM! The versions mention in the below statement are quite old and most 9800 users have moved on from them. Never the less, we would still like you to know that the Torch 9800 has experienced severe battery drainage issues based on certain operating systems.

RIM's Announcement:

The BlackBerry Torch suffers rapid battery drain and overall sluggishness due to the phone application utilizing high amount of CPU.

Effected:

BlackBerry Torch 9800 Smartphone
BlackBerry Device Software 6.0.0.526-6.0.0.536

Currently I am running the newest official OS for the 9800 (6.0.0.576 by Bharti Airtel) and I am not seeing any power drain issues like the ones spoken above. So, if you are running am OS in the range of effected operating system's I would upgrade to 6.0.0.576. If you need, feel free to check out our OS Upgrading Tutorial.

I've heard of users experiencing issues with 6.0.0.600.

Mine drains pretty quick.

OK, guess it's now time to upgrade to .576 from .534. Just been dragging my feet....

Well well well. So I'm not crazy!! I knew it just wasn't me being on the phone too much! LOL. Maybe now I can stop carrying a charger with me everywhere I go.

Actually, I'm getting some of the best battery life I've ever experienced with this phone after upgrading to .600.

This is what I have heard for the 9700. The 9800 seems to be getting conflicting feedback. Could be the user isn't wiping before installing.

Finally I got a data plan and since then (yesterday) guess what!? I'm suffering rapid battery drain on this .600 OS, and I've done the device wipe and battery pulls, it's been 24 hours since I've charged the battery and the battery level is 5% by now, the phone is always hot somehow, any ideas?

I would say that after 24 hrs, it should have mellowed. I also have the .600 and am not experiencing these issues. I have read some posts of the time being a couple of days, but I have seen it mellow in less that 6 hrs.
How about a re-download of the .600 OS, maybe from a different provider? I upgraded from AT&T when they released the OS. (I am an AT&T customer as well). What provider did you get the .600 from?

I'm using the leaked version I've downloaded from BBOS, maybe this is the reason, but I've upgraded the OS a week before and the battery life was great, I activated my data plan 12 hrs ago and now I have to charge the battery (approximately 8% per hour in most of which I was asleep!), and it's the first time I'm using a data plan.

Since your on .600 you may want to think about replacing your battery, and then if it does not work get your phone replaced.

I don't think it's a good idea, i removed the SIM for about an hour and monitored the battery level while I was surfing on a wifi router, it was quite normal, but as soon as I put it back, the drain started, I had trouble connecting through BIS since midnight, and I guess maybe this is the reason, the phone has been trying to connect to the BB server constantly since then so the battery drained too fast, it maybe a good explanation because at the moment I'm posting this reply the phone isn't as hot! as before and the battery level hasn't changed in the last 15 minutes since when i've connected to the BB server which is normal I guess or at least not like the last few hrs at all. I hope this idea works cause I'm not able to re-install or downgrade my OS in the next two weeks!

I have read similar problems with the leaked .600 OS and when upgraded to the Official .600, the issues are gone.

Aha, so which Official version do u suggest then? Is it ok to install for example Vodafone official and just delete the vendor.xml or I have to install my provider's official one?
Sorry I don't have any experiences in the official OSs!

Exactly, deleting the vendor.xml file is all you have to do and you can install any official OS. Go here to select your OS from Vodafone, VodafoneDE_9800_6.0.0.600 - Downloads - BlackBerry Forums, and go here, All In One Guide - How To Upgrade Your Device - with Pictures & Videos , for great instructions on installing the new OS.

I upgraded my OS for many times, but all of 'em were leaked, so I thought maybe official ones are for official users, anyway, thanks a lot, I've already downloaded the AT&T official you mentioned before.
Will be posting as soon as upgrade, for both OS and the damn battery drain issue...

You should get great results with the AT&T .600 OS, mine is working very well.
