Theme Review - Wakai by Hedone Design
Wakai by Hedone Design is one of those themes that you love at first sight. Everything is professional-the layout, the icons, and all the other little pieces of this theme that make it a whole.
When I first used Wakai, I was amazed at how functional it was. Almost every useful application has a shortcut on the homescreen, which makes it extremely useful to the user. Messages, BBM, and even Ringtones are available on the homescreen menu, which shows you that the developer made sure to include everything the user could want.
The Homescreen consists of a menu that takes up the left hand side of the screen, with the categories Phone, Media, Applications, Favorites, and Theme Options. The first, Phone, consists of the applications which relate to using a phone, Media with music and videos, and so on. The Favorites manu displays a 6-icon dock under it, which is great if you prefer to have the original bottom dock, and lastly, Theme Options has 2 options-Full Transparency and Medium Transparency, which changes the opacity of the black 'cover' of the menu.
On the right side, Hedone Design has mashed up all the different elements of the homescreen creatively. The clock is in between to large, semi-transparent numbers, the lower of which is the Battery Meter, and the higher one is the Signal Strength. What's nice about them is that they blend into the background, never showing too much as to annoy you, and never coming in the way of your wallpaper.
Alright, you say, but how do you move from one menu to the next? The answer is simple. One flick of the Trackball/Trackpad up or down will send you to another menu entry - but the text form. If you want to see the full menu, just click the entry and the larger menu will pop up. It's great to see how theme developers use simple advantages to make the theme seem amazing as a whole.
To show you this, here are some screenshots:
Now, if you have been reading my Theme Thursday Reviews over the past weeks, you'll notice that there's always something wrong with the theme. That is because I am very picky about my themes. I am extremely glad to say that there is nothing wrong with this theme. The only suggestion I would make to Hedone Design is to make a keyboard shortcut that would hide the entire menu, and leave the homescreen clear and very wallpaper friendly. Now THAT would be simplicity at it's finest.
Well, sorry guys, I know these theme reviews have been popular, but there will be no contest this week. I do, however, have yet to announce this theme's rating, so here goes...
Wakai by Hedone Design's Theme Thursday rating: Superb (9/10)
Also, make sure to check out Wakai in the BlackBerryOS Store! Sure, the price might set you off a bit, but just try it and see how it will be your favorite theme for a while!
